Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What begins with simple observations from a Utah transplant to Wyoming becomes an ode to family and place, and perhaps an elegy for it all.” —Jeffe Kennedy, author of Wyoming Trucks, True Love, and the Weather Channel In this unconventional memoir, Kevin Holdsworth vividly portrays life in remote, unpredictable country and ruminates on the guts—or foolishness—it takes to put down roots and raise a family in a merciless environment. Growing up in Utah, Holdsworth couldn’t wait to move away. Once ensconced on the East Coast, however, he found himself writing westerns and dreaming of the mountains he’d skied and climbed. Fed up with city life, he moved to a small Wyoming town. In Big Wonderful, he writes of a mountaineering companion’s death, the difficult birth of his son, and his father’s terminal illness—encounters with mortality that sharpened his ideas about risk, care, and commitment. He puts a new spin on mountaineering literature, telling wild tales from his reunion with the mountains but also relating the surprising willpower it took to turn back from risks he would have taken before he became a father. He found he needed courage to protect and engage deeply with his family, his community, and the wild places he loves. Holdsworth’s essays and poems are rich with anecdotes, characters, and vivid images. Readers will feel as if they themselves watched a bear destroy an entire expedition’s food, walked with his great-great-grandmother along the icy Mormon Trail, and tried to plant a garden in Wyoming’s infamous wind. Readers who love the outdoors will eagerly partake, as “Holdsworth invites us to sit down at his literary campfire and listen to vivid, unforgettable stories” (High Country News).

Book excerpt: After decades of consulting with Native American tribes and their casinos I thought it would be of interest to explain what they must go through to be the proud owners of a casino. The process is so tedious that it's humorous. But those tribes that succeed may find a way to self-sufficiency. Or maybe not. But I'm certain they don't think it's funny. The Malaka Tribe of the Costanoan Nation (also known as the Ohlone) in my novel is fictitious but the process they go through is not. I'm not certain whether this is a story of love, hate, greed, politics, financial success, manipulation, or all of that and more. Whatever it is the story will, hopefully, be both entertaining and educational to the readers. The tale takes place in modern times after they have gone through an excruciating and costly process of getting recognition as a legitimate Native American Tribe. This gave them the status of a sovereign nation and a modicum of government support. But they still did not have a reservation and their ancestral lands located in the Presidio area of San Francisco were owned by the federal government.Their next battle would be to reclaim land of their ancestral home or something acceptable as an alternate reservation. If this was a successful venture they would then take on the enormous task of getting approval to build a major casino on their land. They could expect the City of San Francisco and State of California, among others, to object vigorously. The new challenge was daunting but the rewards were enormous. They wanted to share in the Big Wampum enjoyed by tribes with a resort casino development.

Book excerpt: In symbolic parallel of politics and current events, characters and circumstances within The Taos Sows center on stark juxtaposition. Numerous warring factions misuse the transient loyalty of their followers in order to inflict their ideology on all others. True government is irrelevant and subordinate to the act and thrill of governing. Virtually every character is associated with one cult or questionable organization or another, usually working against one another. This is a system upon which shaky foundations are laid, and rebellion is forced to adopt strange measures and evolve in unexpected ways. The corners of this somewhat futuristic society are populated by slightly evolved (some would say mutated) beings known as autvers. Menlo Olsan is one of their leaders, in charge of "uncovering" (creating) relics of a pre-history in which autvers and humans lived peacefully together. The AEL, or Autver Elimination League, is obsessed with autver extermination. However, after losing their great and charismatic leader Emilio Dirken, the AEL is largely ineffectual. Emilio directs his split faction to concentrate on eliminating the dreaded lesbian duo of Yumipepper and Cattamanchia, scourges of traditional society. Some are beginning to see that his obsession has driven him mad, while others embrace his madness...

And so much humanity. In a world of pretenders, David Walks-as-Bear is the real thing." ---Steve Hamilton, author of Michigan's Upper Peninsula's Alex McKnight series 2.) Highly recommended." ---Midwest Book Review 3.) "Ely Stone is a compelling protagonist, richly endowed with both smarts and wit. Through him, David Walks-As-Bear nails voice, character, sense of place, and cultural insight in these pages, and I look forward to reading a great deal more of his work." --Cornelia Read, Madeline Dare series author
