Book Synopsis Why I Started a Small School by : Rosalyn Spencer
Download or read book Why I Started a Small School written by Rosalyn Spencer and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Anyone interested in children and their education should read this’. More than 20 years ago, long before the days of the UK’s government funded free schools, Rosalyn Spencer was the driving force behind the setting up of a non-fee paying ‘alternative’ small school. She had felt compelled to do this, not only because of the difficulties her 9 year old son was facing in mainstream education, and painful memories of her own schooling, but also because of concerns other parents had shared with her about problems their children were experiencing. Whereas the current free schools are generously funded by the government, Rosalyn opened the school with 12 children with virtually no funding at all. In this book, the first in a series of three, Rosalyn tells her personal story leading up to the opening of the small school. It demonstrates some of the failings of the education system and highlights the need for alternative approaches. Her story will appeal to childcare professionals, teachers, parents and anybody who enjoys reading memoirs and narrative non-fiction. Following its release as an ebook in March 2013 it received excellent reviews and became an Amazon Number 1 Best Seller.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Japan-United States Environment-Behavior Research by : Jack Demick
Download or read book Handbook of Japan-United States Environment-Behavior Research written by Jack Demick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-11-30 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an outgrowth of research on the relations between human beings and their environments, which has developed internationally. This development is evident in environment-behavior research studies conducted in countries other than the United States. See Stokols and Altman (1987) for examples of such work in Australia, Japan, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United King dom, the former Soviet Union, and Latin and North America. The international development of this research area is also evident in the establishment of profes sional organizations in different countries such as the Environment-Behavior De sign Research Association (EDRA) in the United States, the Man-Environment Research Association (MERA) in Japan, the International Association for People-En vironment Studies (lAPS) in Great Britain, and the People and Physical Environ ment Research Association (PAPER) in Australia. This volume focuses on environment-behavior research within Japan and the United States as well as cross-cultural studies involving both countries. As we note in detail in Chapter 1, the conference on which the work presented herein is based was preceded by three Japan-United States conferences on environment-behavior research, the first of which took place in Tokyo in 1980. As currently conceived, the present volume stands alone as a compendium of a Significant proportion of cross-cultural research on environment-behavior relations in Japan and the United States that has been developing over the last 15 years. As such, we envision the volume as a basic interdisciplinary reference for anthropolgists, archi tects, psychologists, SOCiologists, urban planners, and environmental geographers.

Book Synopsis Violence and Discipline Problems in U.S. Public Schools by : Sheila Heaviside
Download or read book Violence and Discipline Problems in U.S. Public Schools written by Sheila Heaviside and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1998 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under a Congressional mandate, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is required to collect data on the frequency, seriousness, and incidence of violence in elementary and secondary schools. The NCES responded to this requirement by commissioning a survey, the Principal/School Disciplinarian Survey on School Violence, the results of which are detailed in this report. The school violence survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 1,234 regular public elementary, middle, and secondary schools in the 50 states and the District of Columbia in the spring and summer of 1997. The survey requested information on: (1) the incidence of crime and violence in the public schools; (2) principals' (or school disciplinarians') perceptions about discipline issues; (3) types of disciplinary actions schools took; and (4) security and violence prevention measures in the schools. More than half of U.S. public schools reported experiencing at least one crime incident in the school year 1996-97, and 1 in 10 schools reported at least one serious violent crime during the school year. Crime and violence were more of a problem in middle and high schools than in elementary schools. Middle and high schools were more likely to report that they had experienced one or more incidents of any crime and one or more incidents of serious violent crime than elementary schools. Most public schools reported having zero tolerance policies towards serious student offenses, and most schools reported that they used low levels of security measures to prevent violence. Most schools reported having formal school violence prevention programs. An appendix contains the survey questionnaire. (Contains 12 figures, 32 tables.) (SLD)

Despite her innate ambition and summa cum laude smarts, Kate Pearson has turned into a major slacker. After being unceremoniously dumped by her handsome “almost fiancé,” she abandons her plans and instead spends her days lolling on the couch, watching reruns of Sex and the City. Her friends don’t know what to do other than pass tissues and hope for a comeback, while her practical sister, Angela, pushes every remedy she can think of, from trapeze class to therapy to job interviews. Miraculously, Kate manages to land a job in the admissions department at the revered Hudson Day School. In her new position Kate learns there’s no time for self-pity or nonsense during the thick of the admissions season, or what her colleagues refer to as “the dark time.” As the process revs up, Kate meets smart kids who are unlikable, likeable kids who aren’t very smart, and Park Avenue parents who refuse to take no for an answer. Through a comical and crazy run of wildly unpredictable interviews, subtle bribes, outright threats, final judgments, and page-turning twists, the highly competitive and occasionally absurd world of private school admissions is brought to light in all of its outrageous glory that is reminiscent of Curtis Sittenfeld’s Prep.
