Book Synopsis The Hunter Elite by : Tara Kathleen Kelly
Download or read book The Hunter Elite written by Tara Kathleen Kelly and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century, Theodore Roosevelt, T. S. Van Dyke, and other elite men began describing their big-game hunting as “manly sport with the rifle.” They also began writing about their experiences, publishing hundreds of narratives of hunting and adventure in the popular press (and creating a new literary genre in the process). But why did so many of these big-game hunters publish? What was writing actually doing for them, and what did it do for readers? In exploring these questions, The Hunter Elite reveals new connections among hunting narratives, publishing, and the American conservation movement. Beginning in the 1880s these prolific hunter-writers told readers that big-game hunting was a test of self-restraint and “manly virtues,” and that it was not about violence. They also opposed their sportsmanlike hunting to the slaughtering of game by British imperialists, even as they hunted across North America and throughout the British Empire. Their references to Americanism and manliness appealed to traditional values, but they used very modern publishing technologies to sell their stories, and by 1900 they were reaching hundreds of thousands of readers every month. When hunter-writers took up conservation as a cause, they used that reach to rally popular support for the national parks and for legislation that restricted hunting in the US, Canada, and Newfoundland. The Hunter Elite is the first book to explore both the international nature of American hunting during this period and the essential contributions of hunting narratives and the publishing industry to the North American conservation movement.
Book Synopsis Big Game Shooting - The Lion in South Africa by : F. C. Selous
Download or read book Big Game Shooting - The Lion in South Africa written by F. C. Selous and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Courteney Selous (1851-1917) was a British explorer, hunter and conservationist, and is most remembered for his activities in Southeast Africa. Selous explored lesser-known areas, where he recorded ethnographic notes and collected specimens. ‘Big Game Shooting’, published in 1894, is an anecdotal account that chronicles his experiences of hunting the lion in South Africa, and offers a personal insight into late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century game hunting practices. It would suit anyone with an interest in the culture of hunting from that period, from the historian to the enthusiast. This vintage text is being republished in a high quality, modern and affordable edition, complete with the original artwork and a specially written concise biography.
Book Synopsis Hunting Big Game by : Col. Townsend Whelen
Download or read book Hunting Big Game written by Col. Townsend Whelen and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are the most exciting big game hunting yarns ever written about Africa and Asia. Ten superb stories on hunting lions, elephants, tigers, buffalos, leopards and sheep, with chapters on big game rifles, equipment and knives. The authors are Selous, Baker, Kirby, Neumann, and Litledale—the most expert and fearless hunters ever to track big game. These anthologies make fascinating reading for the practical hunter or the armchair outdoorsman. Whelen has dug deeply into the literature of hunting and has selected what, in his expert opinion, are the best big game hunting stories of all times. They have been chosen with two points in mind: first for extreme readability and adventure; and second, for the technical hunting information in them. All the stories rank high on both sides.
