Book excerpt: On the 8th of August 1900 outstanding German mathematician David Hilbert delivered a talk "Mathematical problems" at the Second Interna tional Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. The talk covered practically all directions of mathematical thought of that time and contained a list of 23 problems which determined the further development of mathema tics in many respects (1, 119]. Hilbert's Sixteenth Problem (the second part) was stated as follows: Problem. To find the maximum number and to determine the relative position of limit cycles of the equation dy Qn(X, y) -= dx Pn(x, y)' where Pn and Qn are polynomials of real variables x, y with real coeffi cients and not greater than n degree. The study of limit cycles is an interesting and very difficult problem of the qualitative theory of differential equations. This theory was origi nated at the end of the nineteenth century in the works of two geniuses of the world science: of the Russian mathematician A. M. Lyapunov and of the French mathematician Henri Poincare. A. M. Lyapunov set forth and solved completely in the very wide class of cases a special problem of the qualitative theory: the problem of motion stability (154]. In turn, H. Poincare stated a general problem of the qualitative analysis which was formulated as follows: not integrating the differential equation and using only the properties of its right-hand sides, to give as more as possi ble complete information on the qualitative behaviour of integral curves defined by this equation (176].

Book excerpt: This book examines qualitative properties of vector fields in the plane, in the spirit of Hilbert's Sixteenth Problem. Two principal topics explored are bifurcations of limit cycles of planar vector fields and desingularization of singular points for individual vector fields and for analytic families of such fields. In addition to presenting important new developments in this area, this book contains an introductory paper which outlines the general context and describes connections between the papers in the volume. The book will appeal to researchers and graduate students working in the qualit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook presents the most efficient analytical techniques in the local bifurcation theory of vector fields. It is centered on the theory of normal forms and its applications, including interaction with symmetries. The first part of the book reviews the center manifold reduction and introduces normal forms (with complete proofs). Basic bifurcations are studied together with bifurcations in the presence of symmetries. Special attention is given to examples with reversible vector fields, including the physical example given by the water waves. In this second edition, many problems with detailed solutions are added at the end of the first part (some systems being in infinite dimensions). The second part deals with the Couette-Taylor hydrodynamical stability problem, between concentric rotating cylinders. The spatial structure of various steady or unsteady solutions results directly from the analysis of the reduced system on a center manifold. In this part we also study bifurcations (simple here) from group orbits of solutions in an elementary way (avoiding heavy algebra). The third part analyzes bifurcations from time periodic solutions of autonomous vector fields. A normal form theory is developed, covering all cases, and emphasizing a partial Floquet reduction theory, which is applicable in infinite dimensions. Studies of period doubling as well as Arnold's resonance tongues are included in this part.

Book excerpt: This textbook contains the lecture series originally delivered at the "Advanced Course on Limit Cycles of Differential Equations" in the Centre de Rechercha Mathematica Barcelona in 2006. It covers the center-focus problem for polynomial vector fields and the application of abelian integrals to limit cycle bifurcations. Both topics are related to the authors' interests in Hilbert's sixteenth problem, but would also be of interest to those working more generally in the qualitative theory of dynamical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general area of the research has been the investigation of nonlinear dynamical systems and their bifurcations . A number of different investigations of bifurcation in multiparameter systems of differential equations have been undertaken. (1) The investigation of global bifurcations in planar vector fields: In studying higher codimension bifurcations in models of chemical reactors, it was necessary to study codimension two bifurcations involving the presence of homoclinic orbits for these systems. A classification of codimension two bifurcations involving a single saddle point was constructed and applied to chemical reactor problems. (2) The investigation of dynamical systems with symmetry groups: A significant discovery is the occurrence of heteroclinic cycles that are structurally stable within the class of symmetric systems. (3) The investigation of one dimensional mappings; Attracting Cantor sets that occur at the limit of period doubling sequences of bifurcations have Lebesgue measure zero. (jhd).

Book excerpt: The book combines the features of a graduate-level textbook with those of a research monograph and survey of the recent results on analysis and geometry of differential equations in the real and complex domain. As a graduate textbook, it includes self-contained, sometimes considerably simplified demonstrations of several fundamental results, which previously appeared only in journal publications (desingularization of planar analytic vector fields, existence of analytic separatrices, positive and negative results on the Riemann-Hilbert problem, Ecalle-Voronin and Martinet-Ramis moduli, solution of the Poincare problem on the degree of an algebraic separatrix, etc.). As a research monograph, it explores in a systematic way the algebraic decidability of local classification problems, rigidity of holomorphic foliations, etc. Each section ends with a collection of problems, partly intended to help the reader to gain understanding and experience with the material, partly drafting demonstrations of the mor The exposition of the book is mostly geometric, though the algebraic side of the constructions is also prominently featured. on several occasions the reader is introduced to adjacent areas, such as intersection theory for divisors on the projective plane or geometric theory of holomorphic vector bundles with meromorphic connections. The book provides the reader with the principal tools of the modern theory of analytic differential equations and intends to serve as a standard source for references in this area.

Book excerpt: The ideology of the theory of fewnomials is the following: real varieties defined by "simple", not cumbersome, systems of equations should have a "simple" topology. One of the results of the theory is a real transcendental analogue of the Bezout theorem: for a large class of systems of *k transcendental equations in *k real variables, the number of roots is finite and can be explicitly estimated from above via the "complexity" of the system. A more general result is the construction of a category of real transcendental manifolds that resemble algebraic varieties in their properties. These results give new information on level sets of elementary functions and even on algebraic equations. The topology of geometric objects given via algebraic equations (real-algebraic curves, surfaces, singularities, etc.) quickly becomes more complicated as the degree of the equations increases. It turns out that the complexity of the topology depends not on the degree of the equations but only on the number of monomials appearing in them. This book provides a number of theorems estimating the complexity of the topology of geometric objects via the cumbersomeness of the defining equations. In addition, the author presents a version of the theory of fewnomials based on the model of a dynamical system in the plane. Pfaff equations and Pfaff manifolds are also studied.

Book excerpt: This book on canonical duality theory provides a comprehensive review of its philosophical origin, physics foundation, and mathematical statements in both finite- and infinite-dimensional spaces. A ground-breaking methodological theory, canonical duality theory can be used for modeling complex systems within a unified framework and for solving a large class of challenging problems in multidisciplinary fields in engineering, mathematics, and the sciences. This volume places a particular emphasis on canonical duality theory’s role in bridging the gap between non-convex analysis/mechanics and global optimization. With 18 total chapters written by experts in their fields, this volume provides a nonconventional theory for unified understanding of the fundamental difficulties in large deformation mechanics, bifurcation/chaos in nonlinear science, and the NP-hard problems in global optimization. Additionally, readers will find a unified methodology and powerful algorithms for solving challenging problems in complex systems with real-world applications in non-convex analysis, non-monotone variational inequalities, integer programming, topology optimization, post-buckling of large deformed structures, etc. Researchers and graduate students will find explanation and potential applications in multidisciplinary fields.
