There are others whose presence and words are exceedingly helpful. In my absence now and then my place has been filled by Dr. Scouller, of Pontiac, whom the boys are always delighted to hear. Every Sabbath, at 10:30 A. M., all the inmates except the few detained by necessary labor, those on the sick list and those under discipline, gather in the Chapel where they are held not longer than an hour and a quarter. The service is quite like similar services on the outside, with perhaps a little more variety and a little more freedom. The unique character of the assembly, composed of wee lads, growing youths and mature men, both white and colored, all neatly attired and well groomed, with faces dull and bright, coarse and refined, sad and happy, and counting often a full thousand or more; the guards in their blue uniforms seated upon raised chairs at equal distances along the aisles; the bowing of so many heads in prayer; the joining of so many voices in the singing of the hymns and in the responsive reading; the songs of the choir, jubilant or plaintive; the notes of the organ, now soft and tremulous, now heavy and full; the modulated clamor, and the sweet strains of the band, and a certain solemnity and tenderness brooding over all, make the service wonderfully impressive. Visitors, ranging from fifty to a couple of hundred, are always present, drawn to the service by curiosity or sympathy or the strange fascination which it seems to have for so many. As I said of this general service in my last report, if it does no other good, it marks and magnifies the Sabbath Day, affords an opportunity to hear the scriptures read and worshipful hymns sung and suggests thoughts of God and the future life.
