Three contractors have undertaken the project by determination of the physi cal properties of the tissues of the head. This unique research, combining the Sophisticated techniques of biology and engineering will continue for several years, culminating in the development, construction, and experimental loading of physical and mathematical models. This program is under continual review of an expert committee. The selection, location and contact of a large population of veterans who sustained head injuries in the Korean campaign has been completed. A matched control population has also been selected. This project has been accomplished in collaboration with the National Research Council Follow-up Agency and appropriate agencies of the Department of Defense. Concise work ups of medical information on these veterans has been completed. From this information, the American National Red Cross, Service to Military Families, is conducting a field contact study. This task has far exceeded all advance estimates as to the difficulty, complexity, man-hours and staff attention required. During the year, it has been necessary to modify the original goal-conversion of all work to a single by September l966-to the more realistic goal of converting that same workload to a multi-machine configuration (composed of two 360/50's and one by August 1967. The original fixed price contract for conversion programming has been expanded from to and has been augmented by additional contractual support. At year end, the conversion is not yet completed with all Honeywell equipment remaining in use alongside of the new configuration. Discontinuation of the principal Honeywell equipment, two H-800 computers, is expected in early Fiscal Year 1968. In spite of the large portion of its resources consumed by the conversion effort, the Computation and Data Processing Branch has, however, made significant contribution to nih research by continuing to provide imagina tive computational support under extremely difficult circumstances.
