To attend to the calls for records from these as well as from numerous clerks of attorneys and searchers of titles, requires the almost constant services of one person. Sometimes three courts are in session at the same time, and to attend all these obliges the clerks very often to remain after hours in order to keep up their records. A SECOND STENOGRAPHER. In this connection let me say that the work of the shorthand writer for the Supreme and Circuit Courts (First Circuit) has become altogether too great for one man, and we have been obliged to employ from time to time a good many extra stenographers at considerable expense. The necessity for the appoint SALARIES OF CLERKS AND INTERPRETERS. respectfully suggest a revision of the salaries of the clerks of some of the courts of record. The salaries of the clerks of the Third, Fourth and Fifth Circuits are too small, also that of the Third Deputy Clerk and of the two Hawaiian interpreters for the Supreme and Circuit Courts. The appointment of two Hawaiian interpreters has worked well, and allows the attendance of one of them at terms of the Circuit Courts of the islands other than Oahu whenever occasion requires. GENERAL INCREASE OF EXPENSES. The growth of our population and of the general business of the Republic have brought with them increased business for f the courts and consequently increased expenses, as will be shown by the summary by the Clerk of the Judiciary Department at the end of this report.
