Book excerpt: Encouraging more people to cycle is increasingly being seen as a vital part of any local authority plan to tackle congestion, improve air quality, promote physical activity and improve accessibility. This design guide brings together and updates guidance previously available in a number of draft Local Transport Notes and other documents. Although the focus is the design of cycle infrastructure, parts of its advice are equally appropriate to improving conditions for pedestrians. Individual chapters cover: general design parameters; signing issues; network management; reducing vehicle speeds on cycle routes; bus and tram routes; cycle lanes; off-road cycle routes; junctions; cycle track crossings; cycle parking; public transport integration. A list of references and an appendix of related publications complete the book. It is hoped that, by bringing together relevant advice in a single document, this guide will make it easier for local authorities to decide what provision, if any, is required to encourage more people to cycle.

Book excerpt: The focus of this report is to develop policy recommendations guidelines, and policies for bicycle and pedestrian use of freeways expressways, tunnels, and toll bridges in California. Results from a survey and literature search are first presented. This is followed by an analysis of collision patterns for bicycles, freeway bicycles, and pedestrian collisions. The safety record of bicycles on bridges and in tunnels is then examined. A multivariate regression analysis of freeways open to bicycles and all freeway collision is described. The report concludes with recommendations addressing issues related to user education, data collection, age restrictions, shoulder geometry and procedures for allowing bicyclists to cross ramps.

Book excerpt: Many bridges are built without accommodations for active transportation users and only serve motorized traffic. The pedestrians and bicyclists who rely on these bridges are exposed to safety-related concerns and their access to equal employment opportunities and essential services may be hindered. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Synthesis 604: Practices for Adding Bicycle and Pedestrian Access on Existing Vehicle Bridges documents the practices employed by state departments of transportation to provide or improve access to existing vehicle bridges for active transportation users.

Book excerpt: “Equal parts critical manifesto and tender mini-memoir about a boy and his bikes” from Eben Weiss, blogger and author of The Enlightened Cyclist (GQ). Cycling is exploding in a good way. Urbanites everywhere, from ironic hipsters to earth-conscious commuters, are taking to the bike like aquatic mammals to water. BikeSnobNYC—cycling’s most prolific, well-known, hilarious, and anonymous blogger—brings a fresh and humorous perspective to the most important vehicle to hit personal transportation since the horse. Bike Snob treats readers to a laugh-out-loud rant and rave about the world of bikes and their riders and offers a unique look at the ins and outs of cycling, from its history and hallmarks to its wide range of bizarre practitioners. Throughout, the author lampoons the missteps, pretensions, and absurdities of bike culture while maintaining a contagious enthusiasm for cycling itself. Bike Snob is an essential volume for anyone who knows, is, or wants to become a cyclist. “This is a social manual that should be bundled with every bike shipped in America.” —Christian Lander, author of Stuff White People Like “I like to think I know a thing or two (or three) about being ruthless and relentless—either trying to win the Tour or fighting cancer. The Snob knows it too. Keeping us dorks in line is tough work. I take pleasure in getting picked on by the Snob, slightly more pleasure in reading his writing, but take the most pleasure punishing his ass (my payback) on the bike either in Central Park or on 9W/River Road. Long live the Snob.” —Lance Armstrong

This design manual focuses on the fundamentals of of bridge design, answering practical questions regarding issues such as bridge width and slopes. It also lists the things that should be taken into account before starting on the actual design and it offers insight in the Dutch regulations regarding loads and collision forces. General advice on cost reduction is also included and several of the company's projects are shown to illustrate the theoretical contents. The Brief Dutch Design Manual for Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridges therefore is a vital source of both practical information and bridge design inspiration"-- back cover.

Book excerpt: Bicycling and walking can play an increasingly significant role in a balanced intermodal transportation system. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) recognizes the transportation value of bicycling and walking, and offers mechanisms to increase consideration of bicyclists' and pedestrians' needs within the National Intermodal Transportation System. This brochure summarizes these bicycle and pedestrian provisions under the ISTEA. The contents are organized as follows: Funding Sources - National Highway System (NHS) Funds, Surface Transportation Program (STP) Funds, Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program Funds, Federal Lands Highway Funds, Scenic Byways Program Funds, and National Recreational Trails Fund; Planning Requirements; Additional Provisions - State Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinators, Bridges, Section 402 Funding, and Federal Transit Funding; Federal/State Matching Requirements; and How the Federal-Aid Program Works.
