Book excerpt: Examine cataloging and classification training programs around the world Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives examines the global development of educational programs for cataloging and classification in the library and information field. Library school faculty and professional librarians from more than 20 countries discuss a wide range of topics, including formal school and continuing education of catalog librarians, education and training for paraprofessional staff in cataloging and technical services, changes in library school programs, and metadata and information organization instruction. Faculty members and seasoned librarians from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Latin America, and the Middle East present case studies and overviews of library and information school programs, bibliographies of cited works in both Western and non-Western language literature, and plenty of helpful tables and charts. Articles presented in Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives are organized geographically to make it easier to check which countries are covered in each region, and to determine regional similarities and differences. Political, historical, cultural, religious, and linguistic factors were also considered to demonstrate the wide range of educational efforts and programs to cultivate cataloging professionals all over the world. Topics examined in Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives include: * education and training development for librarians in the University of Botswana Library * the library science school curricula in the Cross River State of Nigeria * the training of students in cataloging via distant education in South Africa * education programs in China * the education for knowledge organization (including cataloging and classification) in India * the current status of cataloging education in Japan * on the job training of catalog librarians in South Korea * the education for cataloging in Australia * how catalog librarians are trained in Germany and Austria * recent changes to the library education system in Poland * a critical study of cataloging instruction within the library and information science programs in Spain * a recent survey of graduate education and training for cataloging and classification in the United Kingdom * an overview of the education for cataloging and classification in Mexico * the current status of cataloging and classification education in Egypt * recent changes to cataloging teaching in Israel * the continuing education for catalogers in Saudi Arabia * and much more Many of the articles presented in Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives document the initial efforts to introduce education for cataloging in particular countries, including Egypt and Japan. This book is an invaluable resource for library and information school educators, administrators, and students.

Book excerpt: Models of Communication offers a timely reassessment of the significance of modelling in media and communication studies. From a rich variety of different perspectives, the collected essays explore the past, present, and future uses of communication models, in ordinary discourses concerning communication as well as in academic research. This book challenges received views of communication models and opens up new paths of inquiry for communication research. By zooming in on the manifestations and purposes of modelling in ordinary discourses on communication as well as in theoretical expositions, the essays collected in this volume cast new light on the problems and prospects of models crafted for the benefit of communication inquiry. Complementing earlier studies of models of communication, the volume digs deep into fundamental epistemological and ontological questions concerning modelling in the communication disciplines; but it also presents several novel models that promise to be of practical use in empirical studies of media and communication. The book is intended for communication scholars and students of media and will also be of interest for related disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides an empirically based analysis of changes on how various political and denominational actors seek to influence the Church and state relationship, as well as how we understand the idea of the secular state. A set of case studies shows how and why changes in the coverage of the secular state and Church-state relations have followed the dynamics of media logic. By establishing a grounded theory based on media content, legal regulations and political party programs in the years 1989-2015 as well as a current survey, the author throws new light on the theory of mediatization. The book demonstrates that the disseminated idea of the secular state is largely a result of the adaptation of both political and religious representatives to a dynamically changing media logic. "The book is the first study of this kind showing the Polish perspective. It is an interesting and important source of information for those who want to trace the media picture of relations between the Polish state and the institution of the Roman Catholic Church, representing the largest religious community in Poland." Professor Dorota Piontek, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań

Book excerpt: In Diversifying Barbie and Mortal Kombat, the third edited volume in the series that includes From Barbie to Mortal Kombat and Beyond Barbie and Mortal Kombat, we expand the discussions on gender, race, and sexuality in gaming. We include intersectional perspectives on the experiences of diverse players, non-players and designers and promote inclusive designs for broadening access and participation in gaming, design and development. Contributors from media studies, gender studies, game studies, educational design, learning sciences, computer science, and game development examine who plays, how they play, where and what they play, why they play (or choose not to play), and with whom they play. This volume further explores how we can diversify access, participation and design for more inclusive play and learning.

This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economics of information. Theory and practice is an English-language version of the monograph Ekonomia informacji written in September 2019 and published at the beginning of 2020. The idea of translating it into English was born after posting the texts on Research-Gate. Then requests to make it available in English appeared. Rapid changes that have taken place in the world economy over the past year caused some authors to consider it necessary to include them in their texts. Therefore, the update of the texts have been provided, mainly in the context of consequences of the pandemic, but also concerning the entry of Brexit into the next phase. Attention was paid not only to the theoretical but most of all to the practical dimension of information economics. Moreover, the comments that appeared in reviews published in scientific journals, including those concerning the structure of work, have been taken into account. The monograph consists of eight chapters. Each of them was written by a different author. In the first chapter, the conceptualization of the term ‘economics of information’ was presented. It covers the genesis of information economics, an original definition and methodological foundations. It is a starting point and supporting structure of the entire book. The authors of the remaining chapters refer to and comply with the adopted convention of analysis presented by the research editor. The second chapter is devoted to the economics of information in internal communication in the era of social media. It constitutes a sort of bridge between information economics and public relations narrowed down to internal communication. Jacek Trębecki refers to the relationship between behavioral economics and classical economics. He emphasizes that the consequence of information asymmetry may be its influence on distortion of decisions. Chapter three by Waldemar Rydzak – Changes in Access to Information in Crisis Situations – as intended by the author, is to be a starting point for a discussion about the role of information in the contemporary market, which is more and more frequently discussed in the context of the fourth digital wave of development, with significant influence of mass media and the Internet, also in the context of the COVID-related situation. In the fourth chapter, Filip Kaczmarek used the assumptions of counterfactual analysis in his considerations, and on the basis of its results he showed that the so-called opportunity costs, or ‘cost of non-Europe’, are used as an instrument of legitimizing the European Union. In chapter five by Aleksandra Rabczun, Brexit and the Economics of Information, the Brexit case was analyzed in the context of the role played by information economics in this process. Chapter six, written by Izabela Janicka, is an example of using the concept of economics of information to analyze one country, in this case Germany. It was also assumed that both macro and micro aspects are taken into account. The author points to the overriding role of information in the post-industrial economy and to the fact that information has become one of the basic production factors. She also introduces the concept of a functional information minimum and an information gap. In the seventh chapter Marcin Leszczyński defines the role of the state’s reputation in reducing information asymmetry in the global market. The chapter ends with the analysis of policy and diplomacy in shaping trust in a government and the demand for products from a given country on the example of the trade war between the US and China. In the eighth chapter, Information, Welfare and Migrations – Practical Remarks in the Context of the Economics of Information, Katarzyna Świerczyńska fitted into the scope of research on the impact of information on economy and economic decisions of entities at the mega-economic level.

This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author examines the media coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict by six Polish media outlets in 2014 and 2015. Using content analysis and in-depth interviews, the author explores how cultural and historical factors, as well as the national security threat to Poland, affected the media image of the conflict. Despite differences in editorial line, level of political parallelism and type of medium, the Polish media largely spoke with one voice. Interviews with journalists uncover how they view their role in reporting on the conflict, and how national prejudices had an impact on their work. The military and economic threat to Poland, resulting from Russia's actions, was the dominant tool of domestication used by the media to bring the dispute closer to the public.
