Book excerpt: When Isaac Newton died in 1727 without a will, he left behind a wealth of papers that, when examined, gave his followers and his family a deep sense of unease. Some of what they contained was wildly heretical and alchemically obsessed, hinting at a Newton altogether stranger and less palatable than the one enshrined in Westminster Abbey as the paragon of English rationality. These manuscripts had the potential to undermine not merely Newton's reputation, but that of the scientific method he embodied. They were immediately suppressed as "unfit to be printed," and, aside from brief, troubling glimpses spread across centuries, the papers would remain hidden from sight for more than seven generations. In The Newton Papers, Sarah Dry illuminates the tangled history of these private writings over the course of nearly three hundred years, from the long span of Newton's own life into the present day. The writings, on subjects ranging from secret alchemical formulas to impassioned rejections of the Holy Trinity, would eventually come to light as they moved through the hands of relatives, collectors, and scholars. The story of their disappearance, dispersal, and rediscovery is populated by a diverse cast of characters who pursued and possessed the papers, from economist John Maynard Keynes to controversial Jewish Biblical scholar Abraham Yahuda. Dry's captivating narrative moves between these varied personalities, depicting how, as they chased the image of Newton through the thickets of his various obsessions, these men became obsessed themselves with the allure of defining the "true" Newton. Dry skillfully accounts for the ways with which Newton's pursuers have approached his papers over centuries. Ultimately, The Newton Papers shows how Newton has been made and re-made throughout history by those seeking to reconcile the cosmic contradictions of an extraordinarily complex man.

Book Synopsis The History of Vegetarianism and Cow-Veneration in India by : Ludwig Alsdorf
Download or read book The History of Vegetarianism and Cow-Veneration in India written by Ludwig Alsdorf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, this influential study by Ludwig Alsdorf is made available to an English speaking audience, translated by Bal Patil. It focuses on two of the most pertinent issues in Indian religion, the history of vegetarianism and cow-veneration, and its historical approach remains relevant to this day. With reference to significant brahminical texts, such as key chapters of the Book of Manu, the book centres on the author’s analysis of the role of Jinism in the history of vegetarianism. The author explores the history of meat-eating in India and its relationship to religious thought and custom, and searches for solutions to the problem of cattle veneration. Besides a comprehensive translation of the original German manuscript "Beiträge zur Geschichte von Vegetarismus und Rinderverehrung in Indien", four important articles directly related to Alsdorf’s work by Kapadia, Heesterman and Schmidt are made available in this new edition. These additional contributions and careful notes by the editor Willem Bollée add a modern perspective to a study that remains a key reference for students and scholars of Religious Studies, Asian Studies and History.

Book Synopsis Indian Kavya Literature by : Anthony Kennedy Warder
Download or read book Indian Kavya Literature written by Anthony Kennedy Warder and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is multi-volume series work. The main pupose of this work is literary criticism, evaluating a great tradition of literature and to present comprehensive study of sanskrit literature. So far 6 volumes have been published. Each volume presents literature itself in successive periods of its development. This fourth volume describes in more detail the extensive literature preserved from the 7th and 8th centuries. These centuries are relatively rich in extant movels, including those of Bana, Dandin, Kutuhala, Haribhadra and Uddyotana, from which we at last get a fairly full view of the scope of this genre in medieval India. The greatest Indian critics, writing in the 11th century, found the literature of these two centuries, and especially the plays of Harsa, Narayana, Matraraja and Bhavabhuti, of exceptional interest for such theories as those of the aesthetic development of emotions, and consequently provide us with very detailed analyses, here brought together for the first time. This suggests a distinctive character for the period here presented and a subtitle for the present volume. Historically it matches the rise of a new political system after the collapse of the Gupta Empire. The masterpieces of Matraraja, Kutuhala and Uddyotana, recently recovered from neglected manuscripts, are described in this volume, also the restored epic of Kumaradasa and the partly restored novel of Dandin.

Book Synopsis The Jaina Path of Purification by : Padmanabh S. Jaini
Download or read book The Jaina Path of Purification written by Padmanabh S. Jaini and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1998 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religious tradition of the Jainas, unique in many respects, presents a fascinating array of doctrinal and social structures that stem from the anti-vedic movements of ancient times. Drawing extensively on primary sources, Professor Jaini provides a comprehensive introduction to the Jaina experience. Beginning with the Life of Mahavira the author elucidates the essentials of Jaina cosmology and philosophy as well as of the path of purification through which the soul may escape from its Karmic defilements and attain eternal salvation. This path constitutes the integral element within the broader frame-work of Jaina literature, lay ritual and the socio-historical factors, which enabled Jainism to survive and prosper to the present day. In particular, the author has examined the cardinal doctrine of ahimsa (non-harming), both in its impact upon Jaina religious consciousness and as a standard in applying its sacred principles to the conduct of every day life.
