Book Synopsis Neurobiology of "Umwelt" by : Alain Berthoz
Download or read book Neurobiology of "Umwelt" written by Alain Berthoz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the 20th century, German biologist Jakob von Uexküll created the concept of "Umwelt" to denote the environment as experienced by a subject. This concept of environment differs from the idea of passive surroundings and is defined not just by physical surroundings, but is rather a "subjective universe", a space weighted with meaning. Today, neuroscience provides a new way to look at the brain’s capability to create a representation of the world. At the same time behavioural specialists are demonstrating that animals have a richer mental universe than previously known. Philosophical reflection thus finds itself with more experimental and objective data as well. Nearly a century after the publication of von Uexküll’s founding work ("Umwelt und Innenwelt der Tiere" was published in 1909), neurobiologists, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, ethologists, and philosophers revisit his mail concept at the light of modern science
Book Synopsis For Love of Matter by : Freya Mathews
Download or read book For Love of Matter written by Freya Mathews and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In For Love of Matter Freya Mathews challenges basic assumptions of Western science, modern philosophy, and environmental philosophy, arguing that the environmental crisis is a symptom of a larger, metaphysical crisis. Western science rests on the premise that the world is an inert backdrop to human presence rather than a communicative presence in its own right, one capable of dialogical congress with us. Mathews explores the transformative effects of a substitution of the latter, panpsychist premise for the former, materialist one. She suggests that to exist in a dialogical modality is to enter an expanded realm of eros in which the self and world are mutually kindled into a larger, more incandescent state of realization. She argues that any adequate philosophical response to the so-called "environmental crisis" cannot be encompassed within the minor discipline of environmental philosophy but must instead address the full range of existential questions.
Book Synopsis Postmodern Fables by : Jean-Francois Lyotard

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest offering from one of the founding figures of postmodernism is a collection of fifteen "fables" that ask, in the words of Jean-Francois Lyotard, "how to live, and why?" Here, Lyotard provides a mixture of anarchistic irreverence and sober philosophical reflection on a wide range of topics with attention to issues of justice and ethics, aesthetics, and judgment. In sections titled "Verbiages, " "System Fantasies, " "Concealments, " and "Crypts, " Lyotard unravels and reconfigures idealist notions subjects as various and fascinating as the French Revolution, the Holocaust, the reception of French theory in the Anglo-American world, the events of May 1968, the Gulf War, academic travelers as intellectual tourists, the collapse of communism, and his own work in the context of others'.
Book Synopsis The Lost Thread by : Jacques Rancière
Download or read book The Lost Thread written by Jacques Rancière and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Lost Thread, Rancire debunks the notion of Flaubert, Baudelaire, Conrad, Woolf and Keats as reactionary producers of bourgeois mythologies, and instead foregrounds the egalitarian and democratic impulses of modernist literature. Contrary to the canonical interpretation of the relation between modernism and capitalism via the commodification of everyday life, Rancire proposes a radical rethinking of our received ideas regarding the politics of aesthetics in the modern era. Through a complex and original stitching together of form and content, modernists strove to depict by embodying new forms and regimes of material and everyday life. Rancire articulates this substantial change in the politics of representation by explaining the shattering of the sacrosanct hierarchies of the genres and life-forms of classical literature. In the midst of the 19th century, poets, novelists and playwrights challenged the narrative staples of noble means and moral ends, and introduced an entirely new "structure of feeling". In this work, Ranciere continues his project of outlining an egalitarian "distribution of the sensible" as the compelling linkage between politics and aesthetics in the modern age. The Lost Thread not only advances Rancire's commended work on aesthetics, it also offers the reader in depth analyses of the writers in question.
Book Synopsis A Politics of the Ordinary by : Thomas L. Dumm
Download or read book A Politics of the Ordinary written by Thomas L. Dumm and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1999-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Politics of the Ordinary, Thomas Dumm dramatizes how everyday life in the United States intersects with and is influenced by the power of events, on the one hand, and forces of conformity and normalcy on the other. Combining poststructuralist analysis with a sympathetic reading of a strain of American thought that begins with Emerson and culminates in the work of Stanley Cavell, A Politics of the Ordinary investigates incidents from everyday life, political spectacles, and popular culture. Whether juxtaposing reflections about boredom in rural New Mexico with Emerson's theory of constitutional amendment, Richard Nixon's letter of resignation with Thoreau's writings to overcome quiet desperation, or demonstrating how Disney's Toy Story allegorizes the downsizing of the American white-collar work force, Dumm's constant concern is to show how the ordinary is the primary source of the democratic political imagination.

Book Synopsis Infectious and Parasitic Diseases of Livestock by : Pierre Charles Lefevre
Download or read book Infectious and Parasitic Diseases of Livestock written by Pierre Charles Lefevre and published by Cabi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years infectious livestock diseases have swept across many countries, often with dramatic consequences for animal and public health. With climatic changes modifying the distribution of vector-born diseases, emerging novel pathogens can spread rapidly in new areas, at the same time as resistance spreads in places where they are established. This calls for new approaches for the control of parasitic diseases. These two volumes present in detail over 130 viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases of large livestock species from all over the world, accompanied by very valuable and informative illustrations and photographs. Particular attention is also paid to the role of wildlife in their epidemiology, stressing the potential zoonotic characteristics of diseases where applicable and their effects on humans.
