Book excerpt: This volume examines biblical wisdom literature both in its historical context and as it relates to a host of contemporary themes, including overcoming social divisions, reading from a place of inclusion, healing from trauma, and challenging religious attitudes toward climate change and animals. This volume delivers fresh insights on biblical wisdom texts, exploring ways in which wisdom literature speaks perennially to the human condition despite the differences in societies then and now. Employing both biblical studies and theological approaches, the diverse group of authors in this collection examine biblical wisdom literature from a variety of perspectives and methodologies to illuminate the relevance of wisdom for ancient audiences such as exiles, scribes, and leaders, as well as for contemporary audiences concerned with challenges such as climate change, social division, and healing from trauma. Its eleven chapters utilize an accessible style that brings erudite scholarship on biblical wisdom to a broader audience. Biblical Wisdom, Then and Now will be an invaluable resource for undergraduates, graduates, and specialists in biblical studies, as well as the more general reader with an interest in biblical literature and its reception.

Book excerpt: When Old Testament Wisdom appeared in 1981, new perspectives on biblical theology, an increasing awareness of ancient Near Eastern texts resembling biblical wisdom, and an emerging interest in ethnic proverbs were mere intimations of what was to become a dramatic outpouring of scholarship on wisdom literature. In this expanded edition, James Crenshaw takes stock of the wealth of new material produced by contemporary interpreters. Liberation and feminists critics, scholars in comparative religion, specialists in devotional theology, and researchers exploring educational systems in the ancient Near East all have enriched our understanding of wisdom literature in recent years, and all receive insightful treatment in this new volume. Now as before, Crenshaw's Old Testament Wisdom is an invaluable asset for anyone wishing to understand the rich and complex legacy of wisdom literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we wish to walk in God’s victory, blessing, love, hope and glory, we need to walk in His Wisdom and in His Will. Regarding His Will, there is no greater testimony of our desire to follow Him as His children than by the prayer of asking the Lord that His will be done and not ours. And that “will” in the Greek language speaks of desire, purpose and intent. Therefore, Jesus instructs us to pray that the will of the heavenly Father - that same Sovereign Lord of Isaiah 61 – be done, and we are to seek, pursue and desire that God’s purpose, desire, intent and desire for us all in this world be done, and not our own. Regarding His Wisdom, we live in a time where man’s wisdom prevails, to such an extent that the world has now determined what is good, what is real and what truth is. Where the truth and wisdom of man prevail at the expense of God’s wisdom, then corruption of mind and spirit follows. We live in a time where often people have turned what was once evil into good. This is why it says in the Scriptures to seek wisdom for it begins with the fear of the Lord, for wisdom is to know what is good and what is evil and to know good from evil. And once we know what is right and wrong, we need to follow such a path. That is wisdom. The wisdom to know the way, the will, the path and the truth of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crucial responsibility for Christian interpreters of Scripture today, Richard Bauckham insists, is to seek to understand our contemporary context and to explore the Bible's relevance to it in ways that reflect serious critical engagement with that context. In The Bible in the Contemporary World Bauckham models how this task can be carried out. Bauckham calls for our reading of Scripture to lead us into increased engagement with the important issues of today's world, including globalization, environmental degradation, and widespread poverty. He works to bring biblical texts into relationship with these contemporary realities by means of the Bible's metanarrative of God and the world, in which God's purpose takes effect in the salvation and fulfilment of the world as his cherished creation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an explosion of interest in wisdom literature, and many studies are now available. There is every opportunity for people to 'get wisdom, get insight' (Prov. 4:5). However, in today’s world it seems that the practical sensibilities that come from wisdom are found in very few places. Wisdom literature is needed now more than ever. By walking in the way of wisdom we will 'find favour and good success in the sight of God and man' (Prov. 3:4). Richard Belcher’s valuable study begins with a survey of the problem of wisdom literature in Old Testament theology. Subsequent chapters focus on the message and theology of the books of Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes. These books point forward to the need for Christ and the gospel. Belcher concludes by exploring the relationship of Christ to wisdom in terms of his person, work and teaching ministry.

Book excerpt: Rising Leader Shows Readers How to Harness Spiritual Wisdom for Sucessful Living When facing life problems, Christians ask God for help, for blessings, for miracles, for intervention. Rarely do they ask for the one thing that can solve the majority of their problems wisdom. While wisdom is valued, it is rarely sought after. It is attributed to Solomon and relegated to Old Testament days. Yet the Bible tells us that wisdom is still calling us today (Proverbs 8:1). Kyle Searcy, respected leader and pastor, has experienced the favor and blessing of wisdom in his own life. Here he shares the secrets to unlocking the power of wisdom, guiding believers along the path of acquiring and harnessing spiritual wisdom. Through personal examples, stories, Scriptures, and biblical examples, he shows how possessing wisdom produces, among other things, favor, special skills, and wealth. Each chapter ends with practical actions to assist readers in pursuing wisdom and enjoying its benefits in their personal situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom for the Journey culminates years of periodic, miscellaneous writing. My desire to write spills over from my love for reading. Between reading fascinating books and creating writing projects, I began to say “Someday, I’ll write a book.” “Someday” dragged on into years. I finally chose a book title and began to write. Pages of dated manuscript—filed away in folders—attest to my periodic bouts of writing. Years go by without a completed manuscript. It seems like the write-a-book dream had faded. Then one day when I least expect it, the “write-a-book dream” returns—resuscitated and stronger than ever. I hear a voice in my spirit say “You have a book, books to write before you sleep. You must begin to write now!” Immediately I am moved to start over again, and to forget the manuscript I had toyed around with for so long. Wisdom for the Journey is the title that erupts from that voice. With it comes a mandate, “Go all the way this time—on to a published book. Suddenly, my self-talk is activated and I say to myself “Here I go again—back to the writing track. How many times have I been here before? I must not allow history to repeat itself again” When the self-talk stops, I realize that I need some way to ensure that I stay on course, keep procrastination away, and finish the book this time. The idea floods my mind that making a writing vow to God would give me assurance. I search the Bible for wisdom on making vows. Many people of the Bible have made them. Some of their vows have been foolishly made and produced unfavorable consequences. The eleventh chapter of Judges records such a vow. Jephthah, a great warrior, made a vow that results in the death of his only child. Not wanting to make a mistake, I search the scriptures for more wisdom. Scriptures teach that: vows are voluntary, but very serious; carry as much force as a written contract ; and are unbreakable. (Deut. 23:21, 23) Wisdom’s bottom line is: If you make a vow to God you must pay it. The Lord demands it. There are no excuses and no exceptions. I carefully consider the biblical cautions and warnings about making a vow. I prayerfully conclude that for me a vow is the assurance I need for getting the book finished. So I make this vow to God. “Every day that you allow me to live, I will write for at least one hour. The writing sessions will continue daily until I have a completed manuscript ready for publishing. Making that vow is the beginning of Wisdom for the Journey. A few months into the writing sessions, painful arthritis and carpal tunnel pain attack my hands and wrists. I begin to think that its okay to quit now. But I recognize that voice as Satan with a “buyout package”. My response to him is “Get behind me Satan ! You must have lost your mind to suggest that I break my vow to God.” I recite biblical scriptures for strength and courage. Galatians 6:9 reminds me that “in due season we shall reap, if we faint not”. In the meantime, wearing arthritic gloves, and carpal tunnel wrist braces, I continue to write as I seek more wisdom. I apply Romans 4:17 to the situation that says “Call those things which be not as though they were.” And the wisdom of Job 22:28 that says “Thou shall also decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee.” So believing and trusting God, I pray. Then I declare and decree that: “As I continue to write the manuscript my hands are healed and strengthened, and I am anointed and empowered to finish writing the book.” The daily writing sessions continue as planned; the manifestation takes place as decreed; and Wisdom for the Journey is completed, fulfilling the writing vow I made to God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Kugel’s essential introduction and companion to the Bible combines modern scholarship with the wisdom of ancient interpreters for the entire Hebrew Bible. As soon as it appeared, How to Read the Bible was recognized as a masterwork, “awesome, thrilling” (The New York Times), “wonderfully interesting, extremely well presented” (The Washington Post), and “a tour de force...a stunning narrative” (Publishers Weekly). Now, this classic remains the clearest, most inviting and readable guide to the Hebrew Bible around—and a profound meditation on the effect that modern biblical scholarship has had on traditional belief. Moving chapter by chapter, Harvard professor James Kugel covers the Bible’s most significant stories—the Creation of the world, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob and his wives, Moses and the exodus, David’s mighty kingdom, plus the writings of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the other prophets, and on to the Babylonian conquest and the eventual return to Zion. Throughout, Kugel contrasts the way modern scholars understand these events with the way Christians and Jews have traditionally understood them. The latter is not, Kugel shows, a naïve reading; rather, it is the product of a school of sophisticated interpreters who flourished toward the end of the biblical period. These highly ideological readers sought to put their own spin on texts that had been around for centuries, utterly transforming them in the process. Their interpretations became what the Bible meant for centuries and centuries—until modern scholarship came along. The question that this book ultimately asks is: What now? As one reviewer wrote, Kugel’s answer provides “a contemporary model of how to read Sacred Scripture amidst the oppositional pulls of modern scholarship and tradition.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No matter where you are on your faith journey, you are invited to kick it up a notch with Serving the Lord, an evangelical Bible study guide on the book of James. There is no better way to grow in spiritual maturity than faithfully serving God and His people, and no better example of a devoted servant than James, the brother of Jesus. James makes it clear that serving the Lord means putting faith into action in tangible ways that produce healthy fruit. Faith that consists merely of good intentions or intellectual assent is incomplete or dead. Authentic faith always produces evidence of holy living and good deeds by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, such as: • Mercy ministry to the poor • Protecting the defenseless • Rejecting worldliness • Praying for the sick ... and much, much more. Christians are to let all kinds of trials become tests that strengthen their faith and yield righteous works—not to earn salvation but to give evidence of it. The result is spiritual perseverance that leads to eternal glory. It may not make sense to the rest of the world, but believers count troubles as pure joy because in Christ their troubles ultimately have a redemptive purpose. Today is the day to see for yourself what a practical difference Serving the Lord can make in your walk with God.

Book excerpt: In the space between no longer and not yet, you still belong somewhere. It catches most of us by surprise. Life is going along until suddenly we find ourselves at the crossroads of what was and what is yet to be. This in-between space of transition often keeps us awake at night, asking questions like What am I supposed to do now? and Why do I feel so lost and alone? If a new direction doesn't come, it can feel like you're stuck in a cycle of purposeless days. Bestselling author and Bible teacher Nicki Koziarz asked those same questions. Changes were coming in multiple areas of her life, and she struggled to navigate through them. But Nicki discovered how to find direction for today by understanding the types of seasons a transition can bring. In Your New Now, readers will study Moses's life through the perspective of four transition seasons he experienced: development, separation, cultivation, and finished. With practical advice, relatable stories, and biblical wisdom, this book will help you: ● Discern which transition season you're in and learn how to overcome its challenges ● Stop feeling lost in life by discovering where you belong on the road between what was and what will be ● Protect your future by learning to utilize Scripture to fight fears of the unknown Transitions start with something ending, and waiting for a new beginning can be agonizing. But you can learn to be confident and optimistic, even when life feels like it's paused in an unfamiliar now.

Book excerpt: The Words of Solomon is an in depth study of the first nine chapters of Solomons Proverbs, as recorded by the Old King James Bible. These are the chapters which provide a continuous narrative that is told from the perspective of a Hebrew father instructing his son to pursue Wisdom through obedience to Gods law. The remaining chapters of Proverbs go on to address a wider array of random godly principals and their practical application to human life on earth. In an effort to better understand these ancient teachings, the father/son relationship between Solomon and David is first examined, and found to be lacking. Like many fathers of today, King David was a very complex and busy man, but he was also the only man described by God as a man after my own heart. The Proverbs show us that Solomon had devoured his fathers own writings, the psalms, and incorporated them into an easier understood text, which was then chronologically arranged as a manual for a functional father/son relationship. It should be no surprise that Israels wisest king wrote a literary masterpiece capable of being interpreted on multiple levels of understanding. Solomons hidden nuggets of precious wisdom, written three thousand years ago, are brought to the surface to transcend the boundaries of time, for a twenty-first century application. Reading this book will convince all of Wisdoms students that mining Solomons gold is a very worthy pursuit.
