Book Synopsis Women, Seduction, and Betrayal in Biblical Narrative by : Alice Bach
Download or read book Women, Seduction, and Betrayal in Biblical Narrative written by Alice Bach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-08-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible, readable book looks at the cultural study of the Bible, challenging the traditional mode of reading the women in the Bible. Alice Bach applies literary theory, cultural representations of biblical figures, films, and paintings to a close reading of a group of biblical texts revolving around the 'wicked' literary figures in the Bible. She compares the biblical character of the wife of Potiphar with the Second Temple Period narratives and rabbinic midrashim that expand her story. She then reads Bathsheba against a Yiddish novel by David Pinski, and finally looks at the Biblical Salome against a very different Salome created by Oscar Wilde, and the selection of Salomes created by Hollywood. Bach argues that biblical characters have a life in the mind of the reader independent of the stories in which they were created, thus making the reader the site at which the texts and the cultures that produced them come together.

Book excerpt: A revolution has begun. Some have hailed this revolution as a much needed purification of the Church. Others say that it well lead to a major schism in Christianity. Since the release of the bestselling THE SEDUCTION OF CHRISTIANITY, Christians everywhere have come face-to-face with this undeniable truth: we must be certain that what we believe is firmly based upon the teaching of God's Word. The only real remedy for deception and apostasy is a return to a true biblical foundation for Christian living. Hunt's book sounds the call for a return to the sacrificial life that Christ required and the abundant life He offers.

Confronted by that question when his life was disrupted, Father Ramadhani turned to writing as his tool to search into the depths. In this spiritual monograph on Hosea 2:4-25 and 3:1-5, he offers a narrative of a homecoming journey through eight metaphors—Prostituting, Stripping, Caging, Unveiling, Seducing, Purging, Owning, and Sitting. This is the second book in his ‘Trilogy of Redemption’. When everything is gone, the only option is to walk into the unknown in the wilderness. Utter loss can be the only way to rediscover God and reinvent life. This leads to a bigger grace, a better gain, and a more liberating path. God’s seduction plan will bring every sinner home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you found yourself in circumstances you never envisioned, tangled up with people you never approved of, and doing things you never imagined? It seems impossible that the valedictorian of the entire human race would ruin his life by making dumb choices, but Solomon did. Solomon was better equipped to see through Satan’s deceptions than any man who has ever lived, other than Jesus. But in the end, he became just as blind to them as everyone else. Pay attention to the news and you’ll see that it’s not just the numbskulls that fall into Satan’s traps. It’s also the best and brightest of America’s fathers, husbands, and sons. Many smart guys who love God end up being ashamed and humiliated by Satan’s seductions. With humor, grace, and a pastor’s heart, Mark Atteberry seeks to offer practical suggestions on how to avoid a similar fate. His prayer for readers is to experience a wake-up call to move forward and determined on an upward path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first major encyclopedia of its kind, The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Gender Studies (OEBGS) is the go-to source for scholars and students undertaking original research in the field. Extending the work of nineteenth and twentieth century feminist scholarship and more recent queer studies, the Encyclopedia seeks to advance the scholarly conversation by systematically exploring the ways in which gender is constructed in the diverse texts, cultures, and readers that constitute "the world of the Bible." With contributions from leading scholars in gender and biblical studies as well as contemporary gender theorists, classicists, archaeologists, and ancient historians, this comprehensive reference work reflects the diverse and interdisciplinary nature of the field and traces both historical and modern conceptions of gender and sexuality in the Bible. The two-volume Encyclopedia contains more than 160 entries ranging in length from 1,000 to 10,000 words. Each entry includes bibliographic references and suggestions for further reading, as well as a topical outline and index to aid in research. The OEBGS builds upon the pioneering work of biblically focused gender theorists to help guide and encourage further gendered discussions of the Bible.
Book Synopsis The Understanding of Adultery in the Hebrew Bible by : Alexander Izuchukwu Abasili
Download or read book The Understanding of Adultery in the Hebrew Bible written by Alexander Izuchukwu Abasili and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adultery, though not an umbrella concept for all the sexual prohibitions in the Hebrew Bible, enjoys a certain pride of place. Remarkably, it is the one sexual prohibition attested in all biblical genres, which makes it very representative in the Hebrew Bible. It is the only Hebrew biblical sexual prohibition explicitly mentioned in the Decalogue. A solid understanding of Hebrew biblical adultery, therefore, is an important step towards grasping the vital role of human sexuality in the Hebrew Bible, both in terms of inter-human relationships and the relationship between the human and the divine. Without prejudice to the contents of the Hebrew biblical lexicons and theological dictionaries, this work aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of adultery in the Hebrew Bible: its meaning, punishments and the implications thereof. Among others, it corrects some wrong assumptions about the concept of adultery in the Hebrew Bible, and provides a balanced and unbiased Hebrew biblical conception of adultery and the implications thereof for todays couples.
Download or read book Saving Desire written by F. LeRon Shults and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Christian theology has generally treated desire as a dark and negative force intimately related to sin something to be restricted and repressed, closeted and controlled. But, according to LeRon Shults and Jan-Olav Henriksen s Saving Desire, we see only part of the picture if we do not also perceive that desire can be a powerful force for great good. Grounding their work firmly in the experiential realm of human life, the eight eminent theologians contributing to this volume celebrate together the positivity, the sociality, and the physicality of saving desire that is, humankind s innate desire not only for the good life but also, more vitally, for the life-transforming goodness of God.
Book Synopsis Intellect Encounters Faith - A Synthesis by : J. Harold Ellens
Download or read book Intellect Encounters Faith - A Synthesis written by J. Harold Ellens and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellect Encounters Faith – A Synthesis is a Festschrift crafted to honor a renaissance man: a literary tribute to Dr. Jay Harold Ellens that has been long overdue. While attending the 2014 International Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature at the University of Vienna (July 6–10), Professor Ellens celebrated his eighty-second birthday. He is still a most engaged and active scholar, practicing clinical psychologist, and military chaplain (with the rank of Colonel). He publishes widely in Second Temple Judaism, and works that are on the cusp between religious studies/history of religions and psychology, as well as spirituality. He is a marvel to behold and is an excellent, indefatigable Vorbild for both professional colleagues, as well as an ever-growing number of aspiring scholars he mentors. He is the model of the modern peripatetic scholar. The Festschrift acknowledges the major foci of Professor Doctor Ellens’ own work: Psychology, Religious Literature, and Military History. Moreover, there are included in this volume several personal reflections by some of his friends and colleagues, also. The essays/chapters contained herein are works of deep and broad scholarship. Yet, they are deeply personal tributes to a master pedagogue who has touched many lives in many walks of life. All, however, reflect Professor Ellens’ influence on the contributors as if one is looking at them through their writings and seeing him. The reader will find this a most informative volume, and will return to it often as an up-to-date reference work on trends in religious studies, psychology, psychology of religion(s), and even the archaeology of the Second Jewish Temple period. One will discover between these covers a rare and valuable reference work that honors a rare, prolific, and generous man.
