Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Repertory, Vol. 6: April, 1834 It is a mistake to suppose that this portion of education may be committed to feeble and incompetent hands - that it may be negli gently conducted without much injury - and that all its omissions and defects are to be made up and supplied during the few years that are passed in College. This is what a College does not profess to do. It is what a College cannot do. Its professors, however learned, cannot bring back the time that has 'gone by, nor cause the work to be done, which that time was allotted for performing. If it were allowable at present to dwell longer upon this subject, it might be added with un questionable truth, that the examinations for admission into College ought to be considered as the disinterested judgment of enlightened and competent men upon the progress that has been made. There can be no motive for unreasonable strictness. The bias, if any there he, must be on the other side. There is great danger, indeed, that the motives for undue laxity will be too much increased, since insti tutions professing to teach the higher branches have become so multi plied in ourcountry; some of them struggling fora precarious existence, with the fear of poverty always before their eyes. But if in the faith ful discharge of their duty as examiners for admission into College, professors are obliged to make known to parents, that their children are not qualified, however unwelcome such a communication may be, parents, if considerate, will receive it as information given to them for their own benefit, and instead of complaining, or seeking to evade its effects by appealing to a more liberal tribunal, or a more indulgent interpretation, Will profit by it, for the benefit of their offspring, by sending them to places of instruction, where their defects can be sup plied. A little more time may qualify them to enjoy the advantages of College. What Will they be profited by entering College, if they be not so qualified? At best, they can reap but a barren honour. K. Wight. This overture proposed the plan of separate presbyterial sustentation funds; each presbytery being expected to take measures for raising the salaries paid by the feebler churches up to a given standard. The obvious Objections to this plan are, 1. That it cuts Off the distant, small, and feeble presbyteries from the abounding resources of those which are more numerous and wealthy._ 2. It throws the burden of self support after all on those who are least able to bear it, and effectually prevents the progress of the church towards, and beyond its extremities. Another overture on the same subject was presented to the Assembly from the Presbytery of Indian apolis. It was hardly to be expected that the Assembly could favourably entertain these propositions in the state of the country and of public feeling then existing. The subject was therefore laid aside, with the expression of the judgment Of the Assembly, that the object aimed at by these overtures is desirable, and referring to the unsettled condition of the country, as the reason why it was deemed inexpedient to adopt measures at present to raise a special sustentation fund by collections in the churches for that object. At the last meeting Of the Synod of New York this subject occupied the attention of that body, and a committee of fifteen was appointed to prepare a report to be made at the next meeting. The topic at hand in this book is the identity of Jesus (also known as Christology). What is the meaning of Jesus's identity as "the Son of God"? Charles Lee Irons argues that the title "Son of God" denotes his ontological deity from a Trinitarian perspective. Danny Andre Dixon and Dustin R. Smith challenge this view from two different non-Trinitarian viewpoints. Smith argues that Jesus is the authentically human Son of God, the Davidic Messiah, who did not possess a literal preexistence prior to his virgin birth. Dixon argues that Jesus is God's preexistent Son in the sense that God gave him life or existence at some undefined point prior to creation. The authors engage the topic from the perspective that reverences the authority and inspiration of Scripture as the final arbiter of this debate. The literature of early Judaism is also engaged in order to try to understand the extent to which the New Testament's Christology may have been influenced by or operated within the context of Jewish conceptions of divine secondary beings as agents of God.
