Book excerpt: In the rec room in at a church in Cypress, Texas, Margery leads her students in a puppet pageant to strengthen their faith in the Bible and evade Satan's hand. The must-see hit of the 2015 Broadway season, starring Steven Boyer and Geneva Carr, garnered an Obie Award and five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, following its sold out, critically acclaimed off-Broadway runs at MCC Theater and Ensemble Studio Theatre.

Book Synopsis Instant Puppet Skits by : Mikal Keefer
Download or read book Instant Puppet Skits written by Mikal Keefer and published by Group Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use 20 Stories From People Who Met Jesus to enliven favorite Bible stories and to introduce children to puppeteering! Lead kids to discover more about Jesus from the people who knew him best--those he met...like one of the shepherds, Zacchaeus, a Roman soldier, and more! You will get: 2 compact discs with audio for each script. You and your puppeteer friends don't have to worry about digging up sound effects or reading the lines as you perform. It's already done for you! Scripture reference in Table of Contents, Directions for creating a stage, Simple Bible costumes for puppets, Reproducible patterns for props, Reproducible scripts with staging instructions, And a Puppet Primer with tips for powerful and imaginative productions. The twenty scripts you'll find in Instant Puppet Skits have something in common: each features a Bible character who met Jesus and shares a personal insight. John the Baptist tells his would-be, disgusted director that he is not the star attraction, that his purpose was to prepare people to follow Jesus, and while Lazarus tries to collect a refund on his burial, he explains eternal life for those who believe. And you'll find that the scripts have other things in common too: Scripts have no more than four puppets on stage at any one time, and you can re-use the same four "actors" with different costumes to limit the costs of the puppets! Four or less puppets per script makes it easy for you to recruit enough puppeteers! Yet the audience is involved. In "Fish and Loaves", the audience acts the part of the crowd, each of them stuffed with food. After each script you'll find group discussion points in the "For Deeper Learning" section.

Book Synopsis Object Performance in the Black Atlantic by : Paulette Richards
Download or read book Object Performance in the Black Atlantic written by Paulette Richards and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given that slaveholders prohibited the creation of African-style performing objects, is there a traceable connection between traditional African puppets, masks, and performing objects and contemporary African American puppetry? This study approaches the question by looking at the whole performance complex surrounding African performing objects and examines the material culture of object performance. Object Performance in the Black Atlantic argues that since human beings can attribute private, personal meanings to objects obtained for personal use such as dolls, vessels, and quilts, the lines of material culture continuity between African and African American object performance run through objects that performed in ritual rather than theatrical capacity. Split into three parts, this book starts by outlining the spaces where the African American object performance complex persisted through the period of slavery. Part Two traces how African Americans began to reclaim object performance in the era of Jim Crow segregation and Part Three details how increased educational and economic opportunities along with new media technologies enabled African Americans to use performing objects as a powerful mode of resistance to the objectification of Black bodies. This is an essential study for any students of puppetry and material performance, and particularly those concerned with African American performance and performance in North America more broadly.
Book Synopsis Enacting the Bible in medieval and early modern drama by : Eva von Contzen
Download or read book Enacting the Bible in medieval and early modern drama written by Eva von Contzen and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteen chapters in this collection open up new horizons for the study of biblical drama by putting special emphasis on multitemporality, the intersections of biblical narrative and performance, and the strategies employed by playwrights to rework and adapt the biblical source material in Catholic, Protestant and Jewish culture. Aspects under scrutiny include dramatic traditions, confessional and religious rites, dogmas and debates, conceptualisations of performance, and audience response. The contributors stress the co-presence of biblical and contemporary concerns in the periods under discussion, conceiving of biblical drama as a central participant in the dynamic struggle to both interpret and translate the Bible.
