Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Inspiration and Christ For it is evident that if we confine ourselves to the words inspiration, fieomeuaria, we still have no standard by which to distinguish the Bible from scores of other books. According to its primary meaning, in Spiration is not confined to the Bible. It exists and works wherever God breathes life and power into men. A work of genius is inspired. A good life is inspired. A deed of heroism is an inspiration. St. John's gos pel is inspired, but so are the Iliad, and Hamlet and the Divina Commedia. And yet it is entirely consist ent with this to say that the peculiar quality of Biblical inspiration is higher than the inspiration of these works. And imparts to the Bible a character which belongs to none of them. What this peculiar element is, is the thing we want to know. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Inspiration of the Bible If the Bible is the Word of God; if it stands on an in finitely exalted plane, all alone; if it immeasurably tran scends all the greatest productions of human genius; then, we should naturally expect to find that it has unique cre dentials, that there are internal marks which prove it to be the handiwork of God, that there is conclusive evidence to show that its Author is superhuman, Divine. That these expectations are realized we shall now endeavor to show; that there is no reason whatever for any one to doubt the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures is the purpose of this book to demonstrate. As we examine the natural world we find innumerable proofs of the existence of a Personal Creator, and the same God who has manifested Himself thro' His works has also revealed His wisdom and will thro' His Word. The God of creation and the God of written revelation are One, and there are irrefutable arguments to show that the Almighty who made the heavens and the earth. Is also the Author of the Bible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Inspiration Explained and Vindicated For more than a quarter Of a century it has been my privilege and duty, in giving theological instruction, to discuss the subject of Inspiration. As each year I have studied it afresh, my sense Of its importance has increased; and in examining the accumulating litera ture on the topic in books, reviews, and newspapers, I have felt moved to get closer to the original sources, and have determined to ask the attention of the public to a study Of it specially from a Biblical standpoint. This little book is the fruit of a suggestion by Prof. Briggs in his Biblical Study The doctrine of inspiration may be constructed by a careful, painstaking study of the sacred Scriptures themselves, gathering together their testimony as to their own origin; character, design, value, and authority. It lays no claim whatever to originality or scholarship, but its sole aim is to show in simple lan guage that the words of the Bible are the words of God. If He is pleased to own it in the least degree to confirm the faith of any of His children in the verbal inspiration of the book given to us by His Holy Spirit, or to sound a note of alarm that may summons abler pens to the de fence of the truth, the purpose for which it was hastily prepared will be accomplished; and to Him shall be all the praise through Jesus Christ our Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revelation and Inspiration Man has no deeper or wider interest than theology; none deeper, for however much he may change, he never loses his love of the many questions it covers and none wider, for under whatever law he may live he never escapes from its spacious shade; nor does he ever find that it speaks to him in vain or uses a voice that fails to reach him. Once the present writer was talking with a friend who has equal fame as a statesman and a man of letters, and he said, Every day I live, Politics, which are affairs of Man and Time, interest me less, while Theology, which'is an affair of God and Eternity, interests me more. As with him, so with many, though the many feel that their interest is in theology and not in dogma. Dogma, they know, is but a series of resolutions framed by a council or parliament, which they do not respect any the more because the parliament was composed of ecclesiastically-minded persons 5 while the theology which so interests them is a discourse touching God, though the Being so named is the God man con ceived as not only related to himself and his world but also as rising ever higher with the notions of the self and the world. Wise books, not in dogma but in theology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: “This book will prove to be a most effective weapon… against the debunking and skeptical attitudes toward the Gospels that are so prevalent, not only in academe, but also on the street, among young people who, sadly, are leaving the Churches in droves.” – Robert Barron, author of Catholicism For well over a hundred years now, many scholars have questioned the historical truth of the Gospels, claiming that they were originally anonymous. Others have even argued that Jesus of Nazareth did not think he was God and never claimed to be divine. In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, the bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, goes back to the sources—the biblical and historical evidence for Christ—in order to answer several key questions, including: • Were the four Gospels really anonymous? • Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies? • Were the four Gospels written too late to be reliable? • What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas? • Did Jesus claim to be God? • Is Jesus divine in all four Gospels? Or only in John? • Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? • Why was Jesus crucified? • What is the evidence for the Resurrection? As The Case for Jesus will show, recent discoveries in New Testament scholarship, as well as neglected evidence from ancient manuscripts and the early church fathers, together have the potential to pull the rug out from under a century of skepticism toward the traditional Gospels. Above all, Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature of the Divine Inspiration of Scripture The distinction between revelation and inspiration, though continually asserted by one class of theologians, is continually ignored, or rejected as unreal and illusory, by another class. Yet the distinction is founded in the nature of things. Re velation is that through which rational beings come into pos session of information; while inspiration is that through which they come to communicate that information - no matter how obtained. Thus, in relation to a scripture or book, the record of a revelation - while the revelation question is, What is the source of the information? The inspiration question is, Who is the author of the book, or scripture, or record? So Shakespeare, the all-round man, after describing the poet's eye, in a fine frenzy rolling, as receiving some revelation when it glances from heaven to earth, from earth to heaven, goes on to describe an ulterior process, in which the poet's pen records what his eye has seen, so as to' give to airy nothings a local habitation and a name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sword Unsheathed, or the Bible for the Masses This session of the Ministerial Association of Southeast Ohio Conference was a grateful recognition of the blessings of three hundred years of the English Bible. All the interest centered in the Word of God, and in its dis tribution to the masses. The open Bible and the uplifted cross were the parallel needs set forth, in harmony with the expressed con viction of many similar assemblies which are at least partly celebrational of the greatest gift to the English-speaking people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harmony of Divine Truth How it can be accounted for, that the term truth should have been selected by the inspired writers, (or rather by the Spirit Of inspiration.) to distinguish the religion which they exhibit, from every other system in the world, if at the same time they had considered it as a mere moral chaos, made for our plastic hands to mould and shape into such creeds as should please every man's own fancy? It is worthy to be noted that the sacred volume makes a very copious* use of this term, applying it to every department Of religion. For itself, as an inspired book, it claims the honor Of being called the scripture of truth, and the word of truth. Dan. X. 21. Eph. I. 13. Is not the Bible thus manifestly distinguished from the Koran of the Mahometan's, and the Shasters Of the Brahmins, and from every other book which sets up a claim to inspiration? The God of the Bible is called the true God, his beloved Son is called the true Witness, and his Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth; and why, except to distinguish Jehovah from idols, his Son from false Christs, and the Holy Ghost from Satan, and every other lying spirit? The doctrines we are required to believe, are denominated the truth, to distinguish them from the doctrines of devils, and from delusive errors of every kind; and the belief of these doctrines, when it is wrought in our hearts by the Spirit Of God, is said to be truth and no lie, to distinguish it from a false faith which does not work by love. Also, that conduct which is required by the divine law, and which is the external expression of a heart conformed to it, is called obeying the truth. 1 Tim. Ii. 4. 1 John ii. 27. 2 John 4. The church of the living God, when considered as a community, composed Of men redeemed from iniquity, is called the pillar and ground Of the truth. 1 Tim. Iii. 15. See also Isa. Xxvi. 2. What an importance does it give to religious truth when we hear Christ Jesus witnessing this good confession before Pontius Pilate! TO this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. John xviii. 37. Surely that must be a thing Of no small consequence, the establishment of which was the end of our Redeemer's birth, and the sole cause why he came into the world.
