Book excerpt: All in all, they need daily reminders and encouragement to follow Gods Word. The Bible is always useful for current situations that college students face, so the focus of these devotionals is more useful to them than other, more generalized types of devotional readings. To emphasize the enduring truth of the Bible, devotional readings come from every book of both the Old and New Testaments. The Bible is absolutely true, every part of it, every word of it. An index of passages and an index of readings are appended at the back of the book to show the biblical emphasis. Devotional readings include the scripture passage, so that students need not carry a separate Bible with them in order to read the selection. The readings are purposely kept short (300-500 words), so that students can gain the most from their available time. Devotionals are meant to be thought-provoking and applicable to current college situations.

Book excerpt: The "College Students' Summer School and Encampment for Bible Study" of 1888 in many lineaments differed from the Summer School of the previous year, even as that was unlike the initial gathering at Mount Hermon in 1886. Beginning with a vindication of the doctrine of verbal inspiration, the perfection, beauty, and wealth of the Divine Word are unfolded in a series of expository discourses, which are given not only on the score of the precious lessons with which they are fraught, but as examples of the methods employed in Scripture exegesis by eminent masters in Israel. Prominence is given to Mr. Moody's question drawer. The sermons recorded from his lips are his newest. Persuasions to evangelical activity occupy the final pages. - Preface

In Reading the Bible Supernaturally, best-selling author John Piper teaches us how to read the Bible in light of its divine author. In doing so, he highlights the Bible's unique ability to reveal God to humanity in a way that informs our minds, transforms our hearts, and ignites our love. With insights into the biblical text drawn from decades of experience studying, preaching, and teaching Scripture, Piper helps us experience the transformative power of God's Word—a power that extends beyond the mere words on the page. Ultimately, Piper shows us that in the seemingly ordinary act of reading the Bible, something supernatural happens: we encounter the living God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the Western university gradually evolved from the monastic stadium via the cathedral schools of the twelfth century to become the remarkably vigorous and interdisciplinary European institutions of higher learning that transformed Christian intellectual culture in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It is equally well known that subsequent disciplinary developments in higher education, including the founding and flourishing of many of the most prestigious of North American universities, owe equally to the Protestant and perhaps particularly Calvinist influence. But that the secularized modern university that descended from these developments is now in something of an identity crisis is becoming widely – and often awkwardly – apparent. The reason most often given for the crisis is our general failure to produce a morally or spiritually persuasive substitute for the authority that undergirded the intellectual culture of our predecessors. This is frequently also a reason for the discomfort many experience in trying to address the problem, for it requires an acknowledgement, at least, that the secularization hypothesis has proven inadequate as a basis for the sustaining of coherence and general intelligibility in the university curriculum. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the disciplines of biblical studies and theology, which once were the anchor or common point of reference for theological thought, but which are now both marginalized in the curriculum and internally divided as to meaning and purpose, even where the Church itself is concerned. In this final volume of the Scripture and Hermeneutic Series, a group of distinguished scholars have sought to understand the role of the Bible in relation to the disciplines in a fresh way. Offered in a spirit of humility and experimentally, the essays here consider the historic role of the Bible in the university, the status of theological reflection regarding Scripture among the disciplines today, the special role of Scripture in the development of law, the humanities and social sciences, and finally, the way the Bible speaks to issues of academic freedom, intellectual tolerance, and religious liberty.
