Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years have passed since Gene Olson spent many a lonely night on fire and security watch at the Guam Naval Transient Barracks. With long hours, no books or magazines, and only a lizard as company, he picked up a pen and paper and began writing poetry. Though once dead, these pages have been resurrected in his new book. Bipolar Poems: Before and After Lithium is a fascinating poetry collection that spans half a century. Some of the poems were written during Olson’s time in the military, before he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and treated with lithium, offering an interesting contrast with his work of later years. These poems are raw, courageous, compelling, and entertaining—shedding some much-needed light on the shadows of mental illness. I was trying to catch my ship The USS Tioga County (LST-1158), last seen somewhere in Vietnam waters. No one knew her exact whereabouts. In Guam I was assigned at the Naval Transient Barracks as an all night Fire and Security Watch. Once an hour I would walk through the barracks and then call a report to the OD, Officer of the Day. I would also collect orders from late sailors and assigned sleeping quarters etc. All through the night I had only one companion. A lizard was hiding behind a large oval clock. When a fly came near, he would slowly crawl out. His tongue was swift, the fly had no chance! With many hours, no book, no magazines, I picked up a pen and paper and started writing poetry. It was poetry only for myself. I never showed it to anyone. I never dreamed someday it would be published. Fifty years have passed since my poetry attempts started on the Guam Naval Transient Barracks. BIPOLAR POEMS BEFORE AND AFTER LITHIUM, was partly gathered over this time period. Though once dead, the pages have been resurrected. I sometimes wonder if these poems are worthy of print at all. Or if I’m just being a “Proud Peacock.” Time will tell.

Book excerpt: I suffer from bipolar disorder. This collection is a description of my life in the psychiatric system. It is a description of sorrow and of the darkest corners in a mental hospital. A description of failure, but also of small victories appearing from the cold earth, where they are least expected. I have painted pictures of a world viewed through glasses of a manic depressive. They are mood pictures from my life describing how my illness has shaped me to the person I am today. I have a good life today and I have learned to live with my illness. I just have to take care of myself. Sometimes more than I think necessary.

Many people have written about their experiences with mental disorders, but few are excellent poets able to communicate the arc of what they went through in readable, powerful and emotionally charged poems." Book excerpt: If you don't see this life as a straight line that ends, you may see it as a series of cycles that never end. A short one might be a day. The sun rises and the sun sets, the sun rises and the sun sets, and so on. A long one might be the cycle of addiction. Use, recovery, relapse, use, recovery, and so on. I have completed many cycles in this life and have laid a lot of things to rest. The poems in this book tell my story in rhymes. Some are short and some are connected to make stories. These poems have helped a lot of people struggling with depression and addiction, and I hope that they may bring some light into your life.

Book excerpt: Now, I dont want you to panic or anything, but I will be honest You are holding in your hands A book of poetry. I know, I know, poetry is just so outdated. Why waste your precious time, right? And with all due respect to the greats (whom I do refer To frequently and call upon in my own worksRIP, Shakespeare), I have to agree with you. With all of todays technology, pen and paper Is a dying art. And Im not afraid to admit that. Nor am I afraid to admit that I have the gall to change that. What this world needs right now is a poetic revival, A great awakening of new works, Work That is real, raw, and authentic. And that is exactly what I intend to give you. Personality, heart, and soul (wait, do gingers even have one of those?) Touching upon subjects that have been touched on before, such as death and sexuality, But have never been touched quite like this, I assure you, Thats it right there. Right here. And last but not least, dont stop Read . . . (PS: all praise be to Plath for inspiring me and for also suffering from bipolar disorder while attempting to undo the stigma against mental illness.) Heres to hoping my ending turns to be happier than hers. My only aim is that these works demonstrate what its like living from emotional extreme to emotional extreme, and most importantly, what it means To be human.

Book excerpt: Fuckin Poetry: Haiku for the Bipolar is a look into the mind of one average man and his struggle with bipolar disorder. The author originally chose to write poetry in the form of haiku, as a therapeutic method of dealing with his disorder. However, the author found himself in the middle of Axis I teetering between moments of mania, depression and anxiety. As one will see, the authors journey begins with a reflection upon family and leading into a spiraling life and death struggle of losing friends to drugs and suicide. The author deals with the stigmata of bipolar disorder and stamped 296 (the beginning of the DSM diagnostic codes for bipolar disorder) by trying to embrace the world around him and telling it to fuck off at the same time. The author chooses to write about his experiences as impressionist painting of a life in hope that others with this will overcome their fears in others to find their own form of art as a means of articulating to the outside world what is bottled up inside. In a world where one foot is always hanging over the edge, the author hopes that Fuckin Poetry will help others find a way to cope with their disorder.

Book excerpt: I look in the mirror and what do I see? The vision unravels of what is to be. The shell of a woman whose life has been taken away What does it mean to look forward to a new day? Take me away from the life that I lead All I feel is the need to bleed The desire to see red is like hunger or greed. Unzip my skin and set my heart free Is there such a thing as a happy me? Or carrying this burden will I always be? From fleeing for her life from a crazed boyfriend, to an accidental overdose of prescribed medications; and not to mention a life threatening cutting disorder and eight stays in mental institutions, Tina has overcome monumental obstacles to get to where she is now. Her goal with this book is to inspire, and to help others with Bipolar Disorder realize each has different challenges, but all can be managed with the proper amount of drive, persistence and desire to do so. In this book, her poetry tells the traumatic story of her battle back to reality from her living hell with all the raw emotion she was feeling along the way. Tina opens her heart and soul and pours it out before you in these pages through her intense, gut wrenching poems. You will follow Tina on her journey as she describes to you, through her poetry, what it took to return to reality. Through them you get close insight into how the Bipolar mind works, as it goes from extreme agitation to complete hopelessness and then to a manic euphoria. We hope that you will not only enjoy this book but will learn from it as well.

Those of you that have experienced this, whether it is you, family members or friends, you may recognize the feelings and thoughts that I have gone through. However, this exploration is not a “woe is me” detailed account of how I felt, and feel now. Rather, it’s a prism through which I saw, and see things, on a wide variety of subjects.

Book excerpt: The book Bipolar Poetry : Erasing My Demons is a collection of a struggling young man's thoughts captured in intense rhymes. The words that the author found at both the highest and lowest points of his mental illness truly bring to light the inconsistent, ever changing realities that define the bipolar mind. The writer entangles the feelings of loss, love, faith, anger and doubt together in such a way that leaves you questioning good and evil, and the true clarity of either. Throughout the book the poems and prayers outline the writer's journey into the dark searching for light. Bipolar, or Manic Depressant, young adults are diagnosed more and more in the 21st century, and some extreme accounts of this irrational behavior have even resulted in violent disasters plaguing local and national television. Although the author of this book has never really violently hurt anyone, his rhymes emphasize some of the irrational thoughts that in some less fortunate cases to often result in these sometimes deadly tragedies. The author expressed the reasoning behind this book was to help people better comprehend the inconsistent thought patterns, and inner battles that so many with a mental illness face day in a day out. He also stated that even at his lowest he could never comprehend how some could use mental illness to excuse rape or murder, and he praised God he couldn't.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of the flower that went mad comes a new collection of poetry that focuses on the many things that people have been too afraid to open up about: grief, heartbreak and rejection, loneliness, depression and suicide, loss, and healing from trauma. the words i could never say allows you to feel alive again, to express and not be judged for once, and to inspire at least one more person next to you. Most importantly, it centers on the value of life and the power of hope. You've slowly surrendered yourself to all the misery around you. But there is something that you should know: the universe waits for your tears to fall just so that life could be given a new meaning and a new direction. Just as winter changes into spring, your fall will change into the greatest rise one day. There is beauty in your tears; there is hope in your suffering. Even if the entire world were to be set on fire, a drop of your tears would be enough to extinguish everything. Please know that. This collection is the light that many of us have been searching for all our lives but did not know where to find it.
