Book excerpt: Herald it as the coming of age of woman power or shrug it off as mere symbolism to placate all and sundry - the fact is that the glass ceiling at the highest level has been shattered. Even so, with the passage of time the novelty of having a woman President is bound to wear off, and the sole benchmark to evaluate Pratibha Patil would be her performance as the first citizen of the country. A seasoned politician and proven Congress loyalist, Pratibha Patil has the unique distinction of having won every election that she has contested in the 34 years of her long political career. Till recently Governor of Rajasthan, she will need to muster all the skills honed in the rough and tumble of politics, in the professional arena of the courtroom, and in sports stadia to uphold the dignity and decorum of the hallowed office of the President of the country. This book traces the journey of President Pratibha Patil from the small town of Jalgaon to the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan on Raisina Hill as she assumes office as the twelfth President of India, after one of the murkiest, no-holds barred presidential elections ever, making history in the sixtieth year of India's independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Indian society, women are traditionally discriminated against and excluded from political and family related decisions. Despite the large amount of work women must do on a daily basis to support their families, their opinions are rarely acknowledged and their rights are limited. From the time they are born, young Indian girls are the victims of discrimination. Instead of going to school, girls often find themselves forced to work in order to help their families, often from a very young age. Even more worrisome, 25% of women marry before the age of 15 and very often, they marry against their will. This has profound consequences, notably on women's health and their precarious situation often prevents them from receiving proper health care. For many Indian women, poor treatment, violence and exploitation take place on daily basis. However, in the last decades, the situation of women in India has greatly improved.

Book Synopsis Women’s Empowerment in India by : Anjoo Sharan Upadhyaya
Download or read book Women’s Empowerment in India written by Anjoo Sharan Upadhyaya and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume brings together readings describing a range of less-traversed aspects and transferences of women’s rights and struggles in India and develops a comprehensive understanding of the interface between women’s activism and politics. The book documents and discusses diverse ways in which Indian women have struggled for empowerment, political voice and representation, and rallied against injustice and discrimination. Against the backdrop of women’s assertion of rights and negotiations for empowerment, the chapters in this volume explore diverse facets of collective agency, and emanations of women’s politico-legal struggles against stereotypes of gender and class in post-independence India. While the donor-driven international community has been eager to celebrate the successes of its global normative agenda-setting and ‘best practices’ approach, this book - based primarily on field research by the contributors - showcases authentic local ownership and women’s own agency, taking seriously the need to understand the cultural context and pay attention to intersectionality. It presents various examples of women’s activism for change, reflecting on the quotidian struggles and dynamic assertions of voice and political power, within and outside of formal political institutions. The book is a contribution to the debate about agency and ownership as key aspects of empowerment, highlighting women who defy dominant narratives. It will be an essential read for students and academics of political science, gender studies, sociology and social sciences, and cultural studies. It will also be of interest to readers interested in the history of women’s movements and their participation in national and local politics in India.
Book Synopsis South Asian Tissue Economies by : Jacob Copeman
Download or read book South Asian Tissue Economies written by Jacob Copeman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions of the social implications of biotechnology and biological exchange (the extraction of human tissues such as blood, skin and organs for testing, storage and/or distribution for therapeutic or research purposes) have recently been brought strongly to the analytical fore across the social sciences. This book focuses on the variegated biopolitical milieus of this kind of exchange specifically in South Asia. It ranges widely – theoretically, thematically, and regionally – in examining South Asian variants of and engagements with diverse modes of biological exchange: caste, gender, and blood donation in Pakistan, DNA testing amongst a former Untouchable community in south India and amongst diasporic Indians in Houston, Texas, body (cadaveric) donation in India, the use of fake blood in Bangladeshi cinema, the mobilisation of blood, hearts, and ketones to protest the Indian government’s failure to provide redress or care to victims of the 1984 Bhopal industrial disaster, and blood-based political portraits and petitions in south India. In considering this complex of issues, this book extends the parameters of classic accounts of the role of substance transactions in the production of South Asian personhood into investigations of the biopolitics and economies of substance that shape people and communities in diverse parts of the subcontinent, describing findings that illuminate how local responses to the implementation of various kinds of tissue economy both reflect and also transform socio-cultural values in South Asia. This book was published as a special issue of Contemporary South Asia.
