Book excerpt: In this major reinterpretation of religion and society in India, Oberoi challenges earlier accounts of Sikhism, Hinduism, and Islam as historically given categories encompassing well-demarcated units of religious identity. Through an examination of Sikh historical materials, he shows that early Sikhism recognized multiple identities based in local, regional, religious, and secular loyalties. As a result, religious identities were highly blurred and competing definitions of Sikhism were possible. In the closing decades of the nineteenth century, however, the Singh Sabha, a powerful new Sikh movement, began to view the multiplicity in Sikh identity with suspicion and hostility. Aided by cultural forces unleashed by the British Raj, the Singh Sabha sought to recast Sikh tradition and purge it of diversity, bringing about the highly codified culture of modern Sikhism. A study of the process by which a pluralistic religious world view is replaced by a monolithic one, this book questions basic assumptions about the efficacy of fundamentalist claims and the construction of all social and religious identities.

In public portrayals, Hindi has been the language of Hindus and Urdu the language of Muslims, but Christians have been usually been associated with the English of the foreign ‘West’. However, this book shows how Christian writers in India have adopted Hindi in order to promote a form of Christianity that can be seen as Indian, desī, and rooted in the religio-linguistic world of the Hindi belt. Using three case studies, the book demonstrates how Hindi Christian writing strategically presents Christianity as linguistically Hindi, culturally Indian, and theologically informed by other faiths. These works are written to sway public perceptions by promoting particular forms of citizenship in the context of fostering the use of Hindi. Book excerpt: The 16th-century North Indian religious devotee, poet and musician, Svāmī Haridās, composed lyrics in Braj Bhāṣā, dedicated to the divine couple Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. One hundred twenty-eight of them were later compiled in two anthologies: the didactic Aṣṭādaś siddhānta and the rapturous Kelimāl, and became the theological basis of the Haridāsī sampradāya, a sect which still flourishes in Vrindaban, U.P. Neither of these important works has hitherto been edited, properly translated or studied academically. The focus of this book is the text of Haridās’s poetry: its transmission, edition and interpretation. Sixteen 18th-19th century manuscripts are collated for the edition and classified with the help of computer programmes originally employed in taxonomy. The apparatus criticus is followed by an annotated English translation in which readings are assessed and points of linguistic interest discussed. The language of Haridās’s text is thoroughly examined, and a comprehensive etymological glossary is included to enhance our knowledge of Braj. Going beyond textual criticism, the book sets Haridās’s verses in a broader context. The introductory chapter discusses the theological views of the Haridāsī tradition against the background of bhakti, analyses the sources of information about Haridās, and attempts to reconstruct his life. Since Haridās’s lyrics were composed to be sung some of their musical features are analysed. The text of the Kelimāl is also examined through the sectarian concerns of its main commentaries. This study will be an important source of information to all scholars of Braj language and Kṛṣṇa devotionalism.
