Book excerpt: First book of the series At a secret Air Base in the middle of the desert, Capt. Andrews (Andy) is one of an elite team of highly skilled pilots who are trained to pursue alien aircraft that enter Earth’s air space. After many months of training and pursuit experience, Andy is transferred to a Top Secret location focused on extremely complex alien tracking. After many weeks of pursuit, Andy comes face to face with his nemesis. His aircraft is fired upon and explodes in a ball of fire. Andy wakes to find that his body has been reconstructed and altered through alien technology but the impact of the alterations is yet to be discovered. He is being held in a hospital-like room with several other people who he soon finds had been abducted from Earth over a period of several years. But what is this facility and why are they there? Over time Andy begins to form a close relationship with Lindsey, a beautiful blue-eyed captive from Earth. He manages to get out of the secure room and locates his rescue pod which had survived the alien attack. He and Lucy, his on-board computer, devise a way to escape the alien base so they can return with help to rescue the other captives. Andy and Lindsey are then pursued by the US government and other entities who want to use the alien’s technology, which is a part of them, for financial gain. This puts the couple on the run and exposes their friends and families to danger.

Book excerpt: 'Neither a travel book, nor a vast prose poem, nor a history, nor philosophy, nor voyage of discovery, but often all at once' Independent on Sunday WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY RICHARD FLANAGAN In this fascinating journey Claudio Magris, whose knowledge is encyclopaedic and whose curiosity limitless, guides his reader from the source of the Danube in the Bavarian hills through Austro-Hungary and the Balkans to the Black Sea. Along the way he raises the ghosts that inhabit the houses and monuments - from Ovid to Kafka and Canetti - and in so doing sets his finger on the pulse of Central Europe, the vital crucible of a culture that draws on influences of East and West, of Christendom and Islam.

Book excerpt: I'm Genesis Wainwright. I'm a sixth-form student. I come from Somerset. My mum is the best mum in the world. I play the guitar (badly). My best friend is Holly. I'm searching for answers to the Meaning of Life. I believe in True Love. AND I'M IN LOVE WITH NAZ. I want to be a performance poet. And I'm crazy about motorbikes. I can remember everything. Except last night. When Genesis goes on a blind internet date, she just wants to get over her ex-boyfriend Naz. She just wants someone to like her again. But when Genesis wakes up the morning after the date, she can't remember a thing. She doesn't know where she is, or how she got there. And she can hardly move because she is strapped into some kind of body armour ... Before she has time to figure it out, she receives an order through an earpiece stuck in her ear. And then a voice sounds in her head: 'You have been chosen for an assignment ... The vest you're wearing is packed with high explosives. And with one mobile call we can detonate it.' To her horror Genesis has become an agent of mass destruction, a walking weapon in the hands of a terrorist cell. The countdown to detonation has begun: Genesis must re-examine everyone and everything she loves and make terrifying choices ... in the face of certain death. A gutsy, compelling and chilling thrill-ride.

Book excerpt: Over the course of twenty years of delivering sailboats to far-flung quaysides, John Kretschmer has had innumerable adventures, both humorous and terrifying. in Flirting with Mermaids, he recounts the most memorable of them. He crosses the Western Caribbean with a crew of eccentric Swedes researching ancient Mayan mariners, lands in Aden at the outbreak of civil war, and endures a North Atlantic crossing during which he disocvers the existence of Force 13 winds. Approaching Japan at the end of a particularly trying delivery, he finds himself sailing in "a high impact debris zone," but his resolve is unshaken. "If a piece of rocketship jetsam fell out of the sky and sank [me] after encounters with Hurricane Floyd, General Noriega,a tsunami, an erupting volcano, and Typhoon Roy, then it was meant to be."
