Book excerpt: Many are called, but few answer. Who has time. We face many challenges in this life. We strive to be the best wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends; as we we mold careers, tend households and keep a faithful balance of all that is required. But is this all there is? Women possess dreams, but who can pursue those dreams beneath the layers of paperwork and laundry? In Beyond the Vineyards, author D.K. Luffred delves into the essence of today's women. Through the words of short stories and reflective words, she addresses women's many challenges-from living in an unhappy marriage, to losing a lover, to suffering the pain of divorce and separation from one's children. In "Pearl," a ski jacket evokes memories from twenty years ago when Marian thought she met the man of her dreams, but he was engaged to be married. In "Shequagah," Emma stays in a loveless marriage and hears a life message from a voice in a waterfall; she dreams of a better life. Like the women in Beyond the vineyards, if we listen we can hear the voice telling us to wield a paintbrush, learn to sail, and plant a garden. We can accomplish these things if we are brave enough to make the dreams a reality, step beyond our comfort zone, and begin a journey of self-discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guidebook to walking the Great Glen Way, one of Scotland's Great Trails that runs along the Great Glen between Fort William and Inverness. The guidebook - which includes both a guide to the route and a separate OS map booklet - describes the route in both directions. Ideal as an introduction to long-distance walking, the 79-mile Great Glen Way is split into six stages easily walked within a week, with high- and low-level options given for two of these. An alternative route past the northern side of Loch Oich (via Invergarry) is also described. The guidebook includes practical information, 1:100,000 OS mapping, step-by-step route descriptions for every stage of the walk and lists the facilities found along the way. A separate booklet of 1:25,000 OS mapping provides all the mapping needed to walk the trail. The trail stretches alongside the scenic Caledonian Canal, which links Loch Lochy and Loch Oich with the famous Loch Ness. The route uses undulating forest tracks, lakeside paths, old drove roads and military roads, as well as contrasting stretches over heather moorlands or through city suburbs. The Great Glen is one of the most remarkable features in the Scottish landscape - a ruler-straight valley along an ancient fault line through the Highlands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Coby here proposes a new system for the recording and mapping of Roman forts and fortifications that integrates all the data, including size, dating and identification of occupying units. Application of these methods allows analysis that brings new insights into the placement of these forts, the units garrisoning them and the strategy of conquest and defense they underpinned. This is a new and original contribution to the long-running debate over whether the Roman Empire had a coherent grand strategy or merely reacted piecemeal to emerging needs. Although the author focuses on several major campaigns in Britain as case studies, the author stresses that his method's are also applicable to elsewhere in the Empire. Lavishly illustrated with color maps, the book is also supported by a website and blogs, encouraging further investigation and discussion.

Book excerpt: A history of Britain in the violent and unruly era between the first Scandinavian raids in 789 and the final expulsion of the Vikings from York in 954. In 865, a great Viking army landed in East Anglia, precipitating a series of wars that would last until the middle of the following century. It was in this time of crisis that the modern kingdoms of Britain were born. In their responses to the Viking threat, these kingdoms forged their identities as hybrid cultures: vibrant and entrepreneurial peoples adapting to instability and opportunity. Traditionally, Alfred the Great is cast as the central player in the story of Viking Age Britain. But Max Adams, while stressing the genius of Alfred as war leader, law-giver, and forger of the English nation, has a more nuanced narrative approach to this conventional version of history. The Britain encountered by the Scandinavians of the ninth and tenth centuries was one of regional diversity and self-conscious cultural identities, depicted in glorious narrative fashion in The Viking Wars.
