Less than a century later, and based on a plan made by Silas Taylor, all that remained of the castle were a few walls, a series of robbed construction trenches and, maybe two substantial timber framed buildings referred to by Taylor as 'dwellings anciently'. As time passed, the history of the castle was lost, albeit temporarily. Between 2001 and 2004, a project to uncover many unsolved questions concerning the origins, use and demise of the castle was undertaken by a multi-disciplinary team led by the editors of this volume. The project, funded by the Local Heritage Initiative and supported by volunteers, undertook a series of non-intrusive investigations as well as detailed studies into the history and development of this once medieval town. Following the results of the surveys, strategic trenching was located in various locations in and around the castle. From this excavation was found an array of objects such as medieval pottery, coinage and metalwork along with significant structures 'including the foundations of a number of medieval buildings'. 'Looking beyond the Castle Walls' provides a detailed account of the methodology of each of the survey and excavation programmes that assisted in the unravelling some of the answers to this most complex of histories.

Rush has her reasons for exploring every nook and cranny in Aeon Castle in her spare moments. Sure, it makes her new friends testy, but she can handle that. She’s more worried about the ticking time bombs hidden in her tower room upstairs. What she can’t handle is Samuel’s prying. He thinks because they’re both from Bedrock he knows her. But he can’t guess the first thing about her, and she never invited the nosy, insufferable man-child to meddle. Rush has a secret. Samuel has spent the last several months trying to ferret out what she’s hiding. He doesn’t want her to get hurt living up to her nickname. He’d offer help if she’d let him get a word in edgewise. If she’d answer a question or two about what brought her to Aeon. But Rush doesn’t want his help. And she’s not interested in playing by Aeon Society rules. When he finds her outside the walls, and with the Adepts after her no less, he’s done asking permission. Whatever she’s up to, he’s honor bound to protect her. Assuming he can catch up to her first. *** Search terms: fantasy romance, paranormal romance, PNR, magic, fantasy love, love, castle, powers, supernatural, otherworld, portal, action, adventure, romance, romance ebook, romance novel, romance series

Book excerpt: In this engaging book Matthew Johnson looks 'behind the castle gate' to discover the truth about castles in England at the end of the Middle Ages. Traditional studies have seen castles as compromises between the needs of comfort and of defence, and as statements of wealth or power or both. By encouraging the reader to view castles in relation to their inhabitants, Matthew Johnson uncovers a whole new vantage point. He shows how castles functioned as stage-settings against which people played out roles of lord and servant, husband and wife, father and son. Building, rebuilding and living in a castle was as complex an experience as a piece of medieval art. Behind the Castle Gate brings castles and their inhabitants alive. Combining ground-breaking scholarship with fascinating narratives it will be read avidly by all with an interest in castles.

Book excerpt: A tale of war, death, lust, and scheming, set in the starkly beautiful landscapes of medieval Ireland and Wales. Robert FitzStephen is a warrior down on his luck. Arrogant, cold, but a brilliant soldier, FitzStephen commands a castle - yet although his mother was a princess , his father was a lowly steward. When a Welsh rebellion brings defeat and a crippling siege, his highborn comrades scorn him, betraying him to the enemy. A hostage of his cousin, Prince Rhys, FitzStephen is disgraced, seemingly doomed to a life of obscurity and shame. Then King Diarmait arrives . . . Diarmait is the ambitious overlord of an Irish kingdom. Forced to flee by the High King of Ireland, he seeks to reclaim his lands by any means possible - and that includes inviting the Normans in. With nothing left to lose - and perhaps a great deal to gain - FitzStephen agrees to lead the Irishman's armies, and to drive Diarmait's enemies from his kingdom. His price? Acceptance, perhaps . . . or perhaps a kingdom of his own? Butler's debut novel, Swordland is a powerful, impeccably researched story of medieval Celtic life, of the loves, losses, and hatreds of some of the most important figures in Irish and British history.
