Book excerpt: Beyond the Beyond: Music from the Films of David Lynch explores the use of music and sound in Lynch's films, as well as his own original music, and draws on the director's personal archives of photographs and ephemera from Eraserhead onward. From his early short films made in Philadelphia in the 1960s up through more recent feature films like Inland Empire (2006), legendary artist and director David Lynch (born 1946) has used sound to build mood, subvert audience expectations and create new layers of affective meaning.

It was written in 1920 and was first published in The Fantasy Fan in June 1934. The story is told from the first-person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person's pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality. Sharing the experience with Tillinghast, the narrator becomes cognizant of a translucent, alien environment that overlaps our own recognized reality. From this perspective, he witnesses hordes of strange and horrific creatures that defy description. Tillinghast reveals that he has used his machine to transport his house servants into the overlapping plane of reality. He also reveals that the effect works both ways, and allows the alien creature denizens of the alternate dimension to perceive humans. Tillinghast's servants were attacked and killed by one such alien entity, and Tillinghast informs the narrator that it is right behind him. Terrified beyond measure, the narrator picks up a gun and shoots it at the machine, destroying it. Tillinghast dies immediately thereafter as a result of apoplexy. The police investigate the scene and it is placed on record that Tillinghast murdered the servants in spite of their remains never being found. Book excerpt: The Beyond exists outside of time... few are fated to enter. High school sophomore Lewis Graham is awakened by a strange creature appearing through a portal in his bedroom. The creature looks like a doll, dressed in a little button-down suit, and calls himself Mr. Gray. He says he is from the realm of immortals - a place called the Beyond - and that he is a Fate, like the three Fates of Greek and Roman mythology. Mr. Gray says he has come to lead Lewis to his destiny, and that it is imperative he does what he's told. Mr. Gray insists on being taken to school with Lewis to help guide him through his day, but when Lewis follows Mr. Gray's instructions, some very bad things start happening to the people around him. Lewis is forced to question what sort of destiny the creature really has in store for him. Mr. Gray claims no one else can see or hear him, but when a Native American girl at school sneaks Lewis a note containing three simple words, he is launched down a frightening and thought-provoking path: Don't Trust It.

Book excerpt: "An inspiring tribute to female friendship and female courage!"--Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network and The Huntress. Three women are brought together in an enthralling story of friendship, heartbreak, and resilience. Set at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, this is an amazing debut novel. Duty. Honor. Country. That’s West Point’s motto, and every cadet who passes through its stone gates vows to live it. But on the eve of 9/11, as Dani, Hannah and Avery face four grueling years ahead, they realize they’ll only survive if they do it together. Everyone knows Dani is going places. With athletic talent and a brilliant mind, she navigates West Point’s predominantly male environment with wit and confidence, breaking stereotypes and embracing new friends. Hannah’s grandfather, a legendary Army general, offers a stark warning about the dangers that lie ahead, but she moves forward anyway, letting faith guide her path. When she meets her soul mate at West Point, the future looks perfect, just as planned. Wild child Avery moves fast and doesn’t mind breaking a few rules (and hearts) along the way. But she can’t outpace her self-doubt, and the harder she tries, the further it leads her down a treacherous path. The world—of business, of love, and of war—awaits Dani, Hannah, and Avery beyond the gates of West Point. These three women know that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. But soon, that adage no longer rings true—for their future, or their friendship. As they’re pulled in different directions, will their hard-forged bond prevail or shatter? Beyond the Point is a heartfelt look at how our closest friends can become our fiercest battle buddies. After all, the greatest battles we fight rarely require a uniform.

So he can kill her slowly... Barbarians of the Beyond is a return to "Jack Vance Space" and space-opera derring-do that follows in the science fiction Grandmaster's footsteps. "I really enjoyed Barbarians of the Beyond. Matthew Hughes does Jack Vance better than anyone except Jack himself." - George R. R. Martin "Lock the door, turn off the phone, get into a comfy chair, and deep-dive into a marvelous continuation of Jack Vance's Demon Princes series. Matthew Hughes is a treasure and Barbarians of the Beyond is a terrific adventure." - David Gerrold "Matthew Hughes follows nimbly in Jack Vance's footprints, then breaks some fresh trail. First-class space opera." - Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of Hominids "Engaging and enchanting...a fine companion adventure to Jack Vance's The Demon Princes series, told with Matthew Hughes's excellent sense of charm, ethical complexity and exotic worldbuilding. Let's hope this is just the beginning!" - Kurt Busiek "Barbarians of the Beyond is just plain old-fashioned space opera fun with a relatable heroine who is sometimes fallible, rather than some Shaolin Temple kung fu megamaster. I enjoyed it a lot." - Glen Cook "...a tale that captures that special 'golden age' feel in which mankind has travelled far into the stars yet still behaves as though it's the Wild West." - David White, RNR Magazine "Deeply enjoyable and entirely delivers on its promise." - Andrew Wheeler, Editor, Science Fiction Book Club On the Paladins of Vance label, Spatterlight publishes original works by authors who have given their own imagination free rein in the many wonderful worlds of the Grandmaster of fantasy & sci-fi.
