Book excerpt: Stories from the life journey of one of Australia's leading artists in ceramics, beginning in a small isolated town in the Snowy Mountains. At university an unexpected inspiration leads to a PhD, followed by travel and adventure; from driving trucks, and flying gliders, to the Smithsonian in Washington, onwards to the deserts and high mountains of Pakistan and immersion in politics, archaeology, and assassination in Israel. The emotional ups and downs of teaching in art schools, insights into the practice of the art of ceramics, and the subtleties of isolated rural living complete the storytelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Beyond" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1920 and was first published in The Fantasy Fan in June 1934. The story is told from the first-person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person's pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality. Sharing the experience with Tillinghast, the narrator becomes cognizant of a translucent, alien environment that overlaps our own recognized reality. From this perspective, he witnesses hordes of strange and horrific creatures that defy description. Tillinghast reveals that he has used his machine to transport his house servants into the overlapping plane of reality. He also reveals that the effect works both ways, and allows the alien creature denizens of the alternate dimension to perceive humans. Tillinghast's servants were attacked and killed by one such alien entity, and Tillinghast informs the narrator that it is right behind him. Terrified beyond measure, the narrator picks up a gun and shoots it at the machine, destroying it. Tillinghast dies immediately thereafter as a result of apoplexy. The police investigate the scene and it is placed on record that Tillinghast murdered the servants in spite of their remains never being found. Book excerpt: Street Smarts, Beyond the Diploma recently received the “Book of the Year” award for the student demographic from the Institute of Financial Literacy. The EIFLE award was presented at the Institute’s national convention in Orlando in April, 2012. Street Smarts responds to everyone who says “someone should write a book about the “school of hard knocks.” This book is about life skills – the development of those habits and traits that line the path to success. It’s intended to bridge the gap in the traditional college curriculum between “book smarts” and all the real-world, practical information and life skills that students need to succeed after graduation. Street Smarts, Beyond the Diploma is the result of three years of interviews with hundreds of successful people from all walks of life. This book summarizes 125 lessons that were identified over and over as to what students need to understand and master. Critics have raved about the book commenting on its visual format, “less is more” delivery, and entertainment value.

Book excerpt: Accepting an award for poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Daniel Hoffman wrote, "Amid private sufferings and outrage at the brutalities of public life, it is gaiety that sustains us, and love, and the imagination's power to create from both deprivation and delight." This collection embodies those emotions and that imaginative power. Hoffman's verse has always exulted in the resources of language, as sensuous in sound as in response to the natural world. Beyond Silence, to be published on Hoffman's eightieth birthday, presents his shorter poems culled from eight previous collections, plus several new poems. Here, rather than in chronological order, they appear thematically and invite the reader to partake of the pleasures that characterize this distinguished poet's verse: "clarity, grace where desired, accuracy of visual detail and dialogue, and a formal mastery so deft that playfulness comes easily" (Fred Chappell). Arriving at last. It has stumbled across the harshStones, the black marshes. True to itself, by what craftAnd strength it has, it has comeAs a sole survivor returns. From the steep pass.Carved on memory's staffThe legend is nearly decipherable. It has lived up to its vowsIf it enduresThe journey through the dark placesTo bear witness,Casting is messageIn a sort of singing. -- "The Poem"

Book excerpt: "An intriguing and impressive account of corporate social responsibility—and neoliberalism writ large—on the ground, in action, in chemical plant communities in Louisiana…Ottinger effectively [illustrates] how, in complex, culturally saturated ways, corporate commitment to `responsible care’ has created critical challenges for environmental activism and justice." —Kim Fortun, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Residents of a small Louisiana town were sure that the oil refinery next door was making them sick. As part of a campaign demanding relocation away from the refinery, they collected scientific data to prove it. Their campaign ended with a settlement agreement that addressed many of their grievances—but not concerns about their health. Yet, instead of continuing to collect data, residents began to let refinery scientists’ assertions that their operations did not harm them stand without challenge. What makes a community move so suddenly from actively challenging to apparently accepting experts’ authority? Refining Expertise argues that the answer rests in the way that refinery scientists and engineers defined themselves as experts. Rather than claiming to be infallible, they began to portray themselves as responsible. This work drives home the need for both activists and politically engaged scholars to reconfigure their own activities in response, in order to advance community health and robust scientific knowledge about it. Gwen Ottinger is Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington-Bothell, where she teaches in the Science, Technology, & Society and Environmental Studies majors. She is co-editor of Technoscience and Environmental Justice: Expert Cultures in a Grassroots Movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am a Jew. Between 1933 and 1945 I lived in Germany, the country of my birth, with the many who perished and with the few who survived the Holocaust." With these bald statements Ken Arkwright commences the story of his life. There have been countless stories written by and about Holocaust survivors, and each one has its own perspective, each being a witness statement, an eye-witness account - and each deserves to be told. This particular book has the interesting provenance of having first been published in German, where it aroused considerable interest. Now Hybrid Publishers is proud to release a revised and updated English edition, with fascinating material about Arkwright's life and times. For decades the author resisted telling his story. As he comments, "Many years of reflecting on these events had to take place to make me feel the need to write about this journey." He feels an urgency to tell his story, as otherwise his unique life experiences and the life stories of some of the people he met and who perished in the Holocaust will die with him. Now in his ninetieth year, Ken Arkwright writes with clarity and in great detail - and with a remarkable lack of bitterness - about the progress of his life through the Great Depression, the rise of the Nazis, and the Second World War. It is indeed a story beyond survival.

Through more than 200 images from the Guilderland Historical Society, this photographic tribute to the community's rich and diverse legacy reflects the many changes the town has experienced through the years. Discover French's Hollow, one of the nation's first industrial parks, which began in Guilderland in the 1790s.
