It concludes the series’ mystical/political review of the historical events of the last 5,000 years with the struggle of progressive thinkers and activists to help people recognize their universality and achieve enlightenment during the last 140 years. The ongoing fight for human rights and social justice is a battle against the interests of the privileged few who work to stay in power by keeping the masses anchored in their automatic reactions of self-defense and in-fighting, immediate gratification and reproduction. Advances in human knowledge can lead us to our next phase of evolution, one that must be made consciously. Quantum physics has shown us that the wall of separation we perceive between everything that exists in the universe and therefore, between matter and energy, subject and object, is not really there. Matter is not solid and space is not empty. The same particles that make up a table are interwoven with the air around it and with the table’s owner. Once all of humanity accepts this vision of matter as a single but multiform creative energy event, we can begin a new era and the possibility of enlightened faith.

Book excerpt: The author of such global bestsellers as Lolita and Pale Fire, Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) is also one of the most controversial literary translators and translation theorists of modern time. In Between Rhyme and Reason, Stanislav Shvabrin discloses the complexity, nuance, and contradictions behind Nabokov's theory and practice of literalism to reveal how and why translation came to matter to Nabokov so much. Drawing on familiar as well as unknown materials, Shvabrin traces the surprising and largely unknown trajectory of Nabokov's lifelong fascination with translation to demonstrate that, for Nabokov, translation was a form of intellectual communion with his peers across no fewer than six languages. Empowered by Mikhail Bakhtin's insights into the interactive roots of literary creativity, Shvabrin's interpretative chronicle of Nabokov's involvement with translation shows how his dialogic encounters with others in the medium of translation left verbal vestiges on his own creations. Refusing to regard translation as a form of individual expression, Nabokov translated to communicate with his interlocutors, whose words and images continue to reverberate throughout his allusion-rich texts.

Book excerpt: This unusual book takes the form of a dialogue between a linguist and another scientist. This unusual book takes the form of a dialogue between a linguist and another scientist. The dialogue takes place over six days, with each day devoted to a particular topic--and the ensuing digressions. The role of the linguist is to present the fundamentals of the minimalist program of contemporary generative grammar. Although the linguist serves essentially as a voice for Noam Chomsky's ideas, he is not intended to be a portrait of Chomsky himself. The other scientist functions as a kind of devil's advocate, making the arguments that linguists tend to face from those in the "harder" sciences. The author does far more than simply present the minimalist program. He conducts a running argument over the status of theoretical linguistics as a natural science. He raises the general issues of how we conceive words, phrases, and transformations, and what these processes tell us about the human mind. He also attempts to reconcile generative grammar with the punctuated equilibrium version of evolutionary theory. In his foreword, Massimo Piatelli-Palmarini says, "The vast number of readers who have been enthralled by Goedel, Escher, Bach may well like also this syntactic companion, a sort of 'Chomsky, Fibonacci, Bach.'".

Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, in the poverty-stricken Swedish region of Småland, young Valter, the son of a soldier, explores the world around him and watches his older brothers emigrate to America. In this novel of the life of a farm boy, first published in three volumes in 1946, Vilhelm Moberg sensitively explores his own childhood. When Valter, a boy with great imagination, describes the exciting things he sees so vividly, he is punished for lying, so he learns to write his stories down instead. He willingly leaves school and helps support his family by working in lumber camps and a glass factory. His father’s ill health and death bring even harder times. Through all his toil, he debates whether to honor his father’s wish and remain in Sweden to support his mother. With gentle irony and a loving knowledge of the landscape, the people, and the larger issue of class struggle, Moberg offers American readers a deeply moving view of the other side of Swedish immigration.

God created all of us for His divine purpose and has a plan for our lives from birth to transition. When we begin to look at life from His viewpoint, we find that joy in our soul is one of his main purposes, regardless of what we are going through. The bible says, "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God" (Hebrews 12:2). This is an excellent example of how we should live our lives, and this is what you will find in this book: ways to maintain joy as you change the way you look at your circumstances.

Book excerpt: Aloysius Bertrand’s Gaspard de la Nuit (1842) is a familiar title to music lovers, thanks to Ravel’s piano work of the same name, and to specialists of French literature, especially those interested in Baudelaire’s prose poetry. Yet until very recently the collection and its author have generally been viewed almost exclusively through the prism of their pioneering role in the development of the prose poem. By placing Bertrand back in his original context, adopting a comparative approach and engaging with recent critical work on the collection, Valentina Gosetti proposes a substantial reassessment of Gaspard de la Nuit and promotes a new understanding of Bertrand in his own terms, rather than those of his successors. Through his playful and ironic reinterpretation of Romantic clichés, and his overt defiance of the boundaries of poetry and beauty, Bertrand emerges as a fascinating figure in his own right. This book is one of the first full-length studies of Bertrand’s work, and it will be of particular interest to specialists of the nineteenth century and of provincial literature, and to students of nineteenth-century poetry or the fantastic.

Book excerpt: This science fiction adventure represents the ultimate survivor genre, a hero against all odds, against powerful special interests too-big-to-fail, a system controlled by ultimate insiders who often seem hell-bent on obsession, the last war, escalation, and world economic domination, to create a brave new world, another dystopia. And the story focuses on a black site scientist with an urgent mission: to reach the next underground bunker with unparalleled destruction and equipment that smolders, a place with sections that have damage beyond description, beyond all known languages from some unknown experiment, as the experiment may have fractured time or seriously damaged a local aspect of the universe. As people often say the most important trait is location-location-location, a real estate term regarding a vital place or vulnerable point. And in this case, the concern is about a weapon of mass destruction, a favorite human pursue since prehistoric times, and this weapon is not a mother of all bombs, not MOAB or the insidious neutron bomb, but a new age experiment that directed a complex particle beam at a universal pressure point in space, universal defect in spacetime or support aspect, well, similar to the way someone brings down a high-rise building by damaging the main support beam, and in this case to collapse the universal wave function, as the universe may represent a bubble, a supreme algebraic bubble, a supreme bulkhead. And this secret military experiment, one without checks and balances, appears to have punctured the universe with a special warp bubble pierce, and might initiate deflation at faster than light speed, to deflate the universe, as space can move faster than light, which in this case will quickly collapse the universe, to bring about the End of Days, eschatology, the final events of history, and the ultimate human destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aitareya is one of the earliest Upanishads and is attributed to sage Mahidasa Aitareya. It consists of five sections, viz. sections 21 to 25. These sections form the 4th, 5th, and 6th chapters of the 2nd part of the Rigveda Aranyaka. For the young student the मन्त्र Samhita verses. the householder the ब्राह्मण Brahmana verses. the retired the आरण्यक Aranyaka verses. the sannyasi the उपनिषद् Upanishad verses. Young Student = one who is yet being cared for by parents. Householder = one who is in the thick of earning, raising a family, or actively engaged in society. Retired = one who is out of the grind and living on savings. Sannyasi = one who is free in mind and light at heart. These four phases are not separated in time or by age. These may occur in any order in a man’s life, sometimes concurrent, sometimes distinct. One may have the Sannyasa experience earlier and get thrown into the Householder struggle later. It happens. The key point to understand is that these are states of the mind, heart, intellect and emotion, and one’s relationships in society. Using simple yet elegant words, the Rishi narrates the story of creation from the Big Bang onward. The complete paraphernalia for its functioning is described, also the biology of man’s birth. An incisive statement is made that points to the undeniable fact “Opposite Values are Complementary in Nature”. Its mahavakya is prajñānaṃ brahma, i.e. Consciousness = the Divine = the Supreme. २.१.४ so'syāyamātmā puṇyebhyaḥ karmabhyaḥ pratidhīyate । athāsyāyamitara ātmā kṛtakṛtyo vayogataḥ praiti । sa itaḥ prayanneva punarjāyate tadasya tṛtīyaṃ janma ॥ 2.1.4 The soul travels through bodies. It also travels through traits and virtues. Since a Soul gets known and remembered in diverse ways Through physical lineage. Through propagation of ideals. Through celebration of festivals and anniversaries. Hence that is known as the Undying Birth. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Giving the example of sage Vamadeva who attained enlightenment, a devotee is inspired and empowered to embark on an inward journey… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the Sanskrit Enthusiast, each verse is given in Devanagari, with a Latin transliteration, and Padacheda. Vibhakti-case and word meanings are given for many verses.

He’s bustling through your crowded schedule, flagging you down, waving until you take notice and give pause. He speaks even while you’re in the middle of a vegetable-slicing, dinner-prepping, multi-tasking moment. The God who is interested in your comings and goings, weaves through your routines to grab your attention. He has invaded your kitchen space and is cooking up a feast for you. What’s on the menu? Generous helpings of love and mercy, seasoned to perfection with His grace. He’s ready to serve you a platter of patience and integrity, but not until they’re roasted through suffering. He has bowls of sweet comfort for the grief-stricken and stillness for the frazzled. God is in the Kitchen invites you to a serendipitous discovery to broaden your awareness of God’s not-so-hidden intervention in the ordinary. Don’t watch out for big miracles alone. God peppers even the most drab, yawn-inducing day with little surprises. You only need eyes of faith to spot them. God is busy in the kitchen. Guess what He’s whipping up for you?

Book excerpt: Published in France in 1980, Marine Lover is the first in a trilogy in which Luce Irigaray links the interrogation of the feminine in post-Hegelian philosophy with a pre-Socratic investigation of the elements. Irigaray undertakes to interrogate Nietzche, the grandfather of poststructuralist philosophy, from the point of view of water. According to Irigaray, water is the element Nietzsche fears most. She uses this element in her narrative because for her there is a complex relationship between the feminine and the fluid. Irigaray's method is to engage in an amorous dialogue with the male philosopher. In this dialogue, she ruptures conventional discourse and writes in a lyrical style that defies distinction between theory, fiction, and philosophy.

Book excerpt: In Beyond Temptation Sophie and Audrey Boss offer a radical alternative to the tried and tested methods used to combat overeating which either encourage women to rely on willpower alone, or legitimise overeating by providing lists of 'free foods' on which women are actively encouraged to binge. This book doesn't rely on NLP, CBT or life coaching techniques, but instead draws on the authors' own experiences as two overweight and unhappy overeaters and their ten years of experience working with thousands of failed dieters in the 'Beyond Chocolate' workshops and the successful techniques used in their newly established 'Stop Overeating' workshops to offer women a practical, sustainable approach to stopping overeating and achieving long term weight loss.
