Book excerpt: The research evidence is clear: Not only is serving others theologically appropriate, but youth who serve others are more likely to have a positive outlook on life and are less likely than other youth to be involved in at-risk behaviors. Beyond Leaf Raking presents a foundation for youth service, shows how to integrate service-learning into youth ministry, and features stories and illustrations from congregations. In addition, this resource includes practical checklists, worksheets, surveys, guidelines for congregations, and a formal evaluation tool for measuring the impact of service of youth.

Jim Crow laws created a separate but equal system that was anything but equal. In what was considered the greatest nation in the world, there was no room for citizens of color to have any pleasures of life like vacationing. The Authers created an enchanting vacation resort that could rival many of the white ones. This is the story of how they made their dream resort successful and the people who helped build it.

Book excerpt: An innovative new approach to teaching and writing creative nonfiction from veteran teacher and critically acclaimed author Carol Bly. Teachers and writers everywhere are facing the limits imposed by the prevailing models of teaching: community or MFA “workshops” or, at the high-school level, “peer review.” In Beyond the Writers' Workshop Carol Bly presents an alternative. She believes that workshopping’s tendency to engage in wry scorn and pay exaggerated attention to technical details, causes apprentice writers, consciously or unconsciously, to modify their most passionate work. Inspired by a philosophy of individuality and moral rigor, Bly combines ideas and techniques from social work, psychotherapy, and neuroscience with the traditional teaching of fresh metaphor, salient dialogue, lively pace, and analysis of other literary work in her pioneering new approach. She also includes exercises and examples in an extensive practical appendix.

Book excerpt: I first tried writing these little blurbs weekly some years ago when I became a pastor. My office manager suggested I try to fill "this much" space in the church bulletin. I started with the obvious, and wrote a sentence or two about the morning's sermon topic: "Today we look at the way God led Joshua, and see that He still leads us through our personal struggles today." That was deadly dull. I couldn't take it. My own mind drifted off into the nether regions. Slowly, unplanned, I began to find diversions. I followed my own wandering thoughts. I strolled along ethereal shores, looking for pretty shells or interesting wave-worn rocks. Over three hundred of these musings have been the result. Some are ridiculous, and probably none is sublime, but they reflect my mental meanderings. If you choose to come along, I'm grateful for the company. Most of the topics may seem to appear with no rhyme or reason. That is because it is so. They were first dashed off as fillers. Then I began to find the writing a brief respite in the week, an outlet for my own interests. I have always tried to observe and learn wherever I could, from cereal boxes to the internet, so the myriad magazines, emails, media pulp, personal encounters, and random meetings that were woven into the pastorate-as well as countless experiences from previous careers-all provided grist for the mill. The aim of all writing-and the aim of life itself, it seems to me-is to tell the truth. It may be in the form of fiction or fact, but the goal doesn't change. Writing a poem or repairing a motorcycle or remodeling a room or preaching a sermon-I see them as all the same. Work, recreation, ministry, serving, laughing, call them what you will, if done honestly, all become worship. For each moment, for each task, we are to be true to ourselves and to others. I have tried to be so here. In this little collection you will find-again like life itself-that the sacred moments must exist side by side with the trivial, the holy with the profane. Also, I have not bothered to group by topic or date of creation. An anecdote about Christmas may follow one about paper clips. I figure it's easier to tell you that than to do the tedious work of careful collating. Please try to make the best of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of meaning in language embraces a diverse range of problems and methods. Philosophers think through the relationship between language and the world; linguists document speakers' knowledge of meaning; psychologists investigate the mechanisms of understanding and production. Up through the early 2000s, these investigations were generally compartmentalized: indeed, researchers often regarded both the subject-matter and the methods of other disciplines with skepticism. Since then, however, there has been a sea change in the field, enabling researchers increasingly to synthesize the perspectives of philosophy, linguistics and psychology and to energize all the fields with rich new intellectual perspectives that facilitate meaningful interchange. The time is right for a broader exploration and reflection on the status and problems of semantics as an interdisciplinary enterprise, in light of a decade of challenging and successful research in this area. Taking as its starting-point Lepore and Stone's 2014 book Imagination and Convention, this volume aims to reconcile different methodological perspectives while refocusing semanticists on new problems where integrative work will find the broadest and most receptive audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Spence-Ash has written the novel in eight points of view, but each character is utterly three-dimensional and distinct. This debut novel captivated me from start to finish." —Julia Quinn, author of the Bridgerton Series A sweeping, tenderhearted love story, Beyond That, the Sea by Laura Spence-Ash tells the story of two families living through World War II on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and the shy, irresistible young woman who will call them both her own. As German bombs fall over London in 1940, working-class parents Millie and Reginald Thompson make an impossible choice: they decide to send their eleven-year-old daughter, Beatrix, to America. There, she’ll live with another family for the duration of the war, where they hope she’ll stay safe. Scared and angry, feeling lonely and displaced, Bea arrives in Boston to meet the Gregorys. Mr. and Mrs. G, and their sons William and Gerald, fold Bea seamlessly into their world. She becomes part of this lively family, learning their ways and their stories, adjusting to their affluent lifestyle. Bea grows close to both boys, one older and one younger, and fills in the gap between them. Before long, before she even realizes it, life with the Gregorys feels more natural to her than the quiet, spare life with her own parents back in England. As Bea comes into herself and relaxes into her new life—summers on the coast in Maine, new friends clamoring to hear about life across the sea—the girl she had been begins to fade away, until, abruptly, she is called home to London when the war ends. Desperate as she is not to leave this life behind, Bea dutifully retraces her trip across the Atlantic back to her new, old world. As she returns to post-war London, the memory of her American family stays with her, never fully letting her go, and always pulling on her heart as she tries to move on and pursue love and a life of her own. As we follow Bea over time, navigating between her two worlds, Beyond That, the Sea emerges as a beautifully written, absorbing novel, full of grace and heartache, forgiveness and understanding, loss and love.
