Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institut für Fremdsprachliche Philologien), course: Shakespeare's Comedies, language: English, abstract: What kind of play is Twelfth Night? This question has probably been raised by many readers of Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night and has moreover become a central aspect of discussion for numerous critics. It is thus not surprising to find several approaches of defining the tone, style or genre of the play in annotated editions, essays and study books. (cf. Cambridge School Shakespeare, Longman Study Texts) Although there are many ways of interpreting Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night I want to spotlight one distinctive perspective, as it somewhat resembles the initial platform for this essay. “A very amusing and charming play, sunny and always enjoyable. Filled with innocent laughter and preposterous situations, it has a happy ending which restores harmony [...]. All the characters are likeable and funny [...] even Malvolio has his comic appeal, especially when he gets what he deserves at the play’s end. The whole play is simply a delightful entertainment which must never be taken seriously.” (Gibson 1993, 156) Following this interpretation of Twelfth Night however, the reader will miss much of the content that lies behind the comic apparel. Twelfth Night is not always enjoyable, as it often manages to shift the attention from the light play of love and illusion towards the more serious and worrying fate of characters like Malvolio. At yet another point in his review Gibson offers a more suitable angle to Twelfth Night: “An upsetting play which seems light and amusing on the surface yet has dark and harsh depths. It is an uneasy play about outsiders who lose” (157). According to this quote, I argue that Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is more than just a pure comedy and even has tragic elements to it. Malvolio’s function is not simply to serve as the embodiment of a self-centred and self-loving man, who needs to be taught a lesson, but he is the victim of a cruel prank, which eventually leads to his collapse in person as well as in reputation. Thus it will be the main focus of this paper to rethink Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night as a play beyond comedy. It shall be discussed whether a classification as the one quoted earlier, grasps the whole meaning of the play or whether there are more layers to it – even underlying tragedies. With regard to David Willbern and his essay Malvolio’s Fall (1978) emphasis will be put on the character of Malvolio and the question, if there is anything like a tragic fall in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

Book excerpt: A theatre-based study guide to Shakespeare's greatest play, emphasising the conditions of Jacobethan production, textual variations, and aspects of modern performance, rather than the background of ideas or critical interpretations. This book aims to introduce students (including those with little or no prior experience of the field) to the worlds of Shakespeare and his theatre revealed in King Lear. It begins by ‘Approaching Shakespeare’ as utterly a man of the theatre, a professional actor before he was a playwright and a resident dramatist who knew intimately the actors for whom he wrote. It continues by discussing ‘King Lear’ in that light. The middle chapters look in detail at the ‘Actors and Players’ of the drama, and at Shakespeare’s favourite ‘Acts and Devices’ as deployed within it. A final chapter considers the concept of 'comedic agony'. The annotated Bibliography includes the current major editions, major film-adaptations, and a selection of both the best criticism and the most useful websites.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: Women mistaken for men, men mistaken for women, disguised as men - this play with identity and gender does not seem to be a new topic for the theatre audience of the 21. century. But in Elizabethan England, where identity and the question of class were very important for society, these confusing relationships shown on stage must have been puzzling. Although confusions over identity are nothing new in comedy since classical times, it is Shakespeare who mainly focused on the issue of gender in his comedies. In 'Twelfth Night' he plays with the cultural constructions of his time, for example the question of gender and erotic attraction, even between partners of the same sex.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: Two key themes stand out in Act 2, Scene 4, of William Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night. On one hand constancy of love plays a significant part and on the other hand gender deception. In this scene Viola, disguised as Cesario, defends the love of women and defies Orsino’s critic of women’s inconsistent love compared to men’s enduring passion: "Too well what love women to men may owe. In faith, they are as true of heart as we." (2.4.103-104) Viola’s appreciation of the woman’s side and her continuous word plays demonstrate her intention to help Orsino uncovering her disguise and reciprocating her love. The following dialogue provides an essential challenge for the interpretation and production of this scene. One can either illustrate that Orsino actually reveals Violas deceit or lay emphasis on Orsino’s simplicity and thus demonstrate his naivety. Her hints commence when she says: “We men may say more, swear more, but indeed our shows are more than will” (2.4.116). Here, Shakespeare uses the phonological identity of ‘we men’ and ‘women’ to create an ambiguity of meaning. The ambiguity peaks with her admission: “I am all the daughters of my father’s house, and all the brother too” (2.4.118-119), indicating that Viola assumes her brother Sebastian died in the shipwreck. Orsino seems captured in Viola’s story before he commands her to go to Olivia again concerning his confession of love. However, the scene begins with a melancholic Orsino demanding for a song, performed by Feste. The waiting for the jester leads to a conversation between Orsino and Viola. Orsino realizes that Viola is in love with someone and interrogates her. In this dialogue she insinuates that Orsino is the one she loves but due to her disguise Orsino does not detect the clue although she uses the word ‘your’ conspicuously three times in a row. "Viola: A little, by your favour. Orsino: What kind of woman is't? Viola: Of your complexion. Orsino: She is not worth thee then. What years, i' faith? Viola: About your years, my lord." (2.4.24-27) How to emphasize Viola’s ‘your’ is another crucial challenge for the interpretation of the production of this scene. After disclosing the age of Violas loved one Orsino gives her the advice to always take a woman that is younger than the man for the reason that the men’s love is unsteady and faltering. [...]

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik), course: Shakespeare's Comedies, language: English, abstract: SHAKESPEARE was one of the most famous renaissance writers. His play "Twelfth Night" was written during the English renaissance and maybe overlapped with the creation of the great tragedy Hamlet. The aim of this paper is to analyse in what way Shakespeare presented the characters of the play. Central to this discussion are the contemporary understandings of the human nature as well as the psychological assumptions concerning the mental distraction of people. It is undisputable that CICERO and his work "De officiis" had a great impact on the English renaissance humanists. The term "humanism" is a translation of the Italian word 'umanista' which denotes someone who teaches humanae literae. WELLS rightly claims that "the ruling ambition of the humanists was to recover the values of classical civilisation". Their ideal form of government was "a just society, ruled by a wise and responsible oligarchy". And "a humanist was someone who made it his business to understand humankind". So now the audience of Twelfth Night is confronted with an unordered society that consists of characters that absolutely lack the renaissance ideal of how humans should be. It is proposed to show how SHAKESPEARE manages to reorder the mad state Illyria - the setting of the play. Moreover the process of metamorphosing into ideal humans in the sense of the Renaissance understanding will be traced. Since there are reams of publications on SHAKESPEARE'S works a choice of some of them had to be carried out. ROBIN WELLS' monograph Shakespeare's Humanism served as a basis for this paper. WELLS portrays a very detailed image of what concerned the English renaissance humanists. Moreover he classifies SHAKESPEARE and his plays in the contemporary world-view. In order to reconstruct t

It chronicles the history of comedy, starting with Ancient Greece, before summarising key chapters in Anglophone literary history, such as Shakespearean comedy, Restoration comedy, and Theatre of the Absurd. The book features an overview of key comic techniques (including slapstick, puns, and wit), as well as concise summaries of major theoretical debates (including the superiority theory and the Freudian account of laughter). The book works with many examples from the history of Anglophone comedy, including Oscar Wilde, Monty Python, and classic sitcoms. It addresses current research into cringe humour and the controversial topic of diversity in the field of comedy, and it connects classical tropes of comedy (like the fool or the marriage plot) to present-day examples. The book thus serves as an up-to-date study guide for everyone interested in comedy and its various subgenres.

Book excerpt: Set in a topsy-turvy world like a holiday revel, this comedy devises a romantic plot around separated twins, misplaced passions, and mistaken identity. Juxtaposed to it is the satirical story of a self-deluded steward who dreams of becoming Count Malvolio only to receive his comeuppance at the hands of the merrymakers he wishes to suppress. The two plots combine to create a farce touched with melancholy, mixed throughout with seductively beautiful explorations on the themes of love and time, and the play ends, not with laughter, but with a clown's sad song.Viola, separated from her twin Sebastian, dresses as a boy and works for the Duke Orsino, whom she falls in love with. Orsino is in love with the Countess Olivia, and sends Viola to court her for him, but Olivia falls for Viola instead. Sebastian arrives, causing a flood of mistaken identity, and marries Olivia. Viola then reveals she is a girl and marries Orsino.
