Book excerpt: If you thought Arnold Schwarzenegger put Graz, Austria on the bodybuilding map, how about Stuart McRobert and Nicosia, Cyprus? Imagine, one man, on a Mediterranean island no less, who has the audacity to directly challenge most contemporary bodybuilding advice. Instead of being another me-too bodybuilding book, Brawn is unique: its tone is serious, its manner evangelical, but most importantly, its focus is on things that actually work for the average trainee. "Drugs are evil and the scourge of bodybuilding," says McRobert, in effect "and forget about Mr O-type training -- it just won't work for most people. I'll tell you some things that do work". Brawn has most bodybuilding books beaten hands down in the depth department, but its biggest contribution just might be in breadth: Brawn introduces you to over 90 percent of the factors that will determine your ultimate success in the gym. A very useful book, which can help a lot of people to make tremendous bodybuilding progress.

Before anabolic steroids started to infest the bodybuilding world, variations of Course #1 were famous, popular, and responsible for building tons of muscles. But in the 1960s, when the use of steroids became popular among competitive bodybuilders, the popularity of Course #1 began to wane. Since then, the routines most commonly promoted in the bodybuilding world have been those used by physique stars who were genetically gifted for bodybuilding and on steroids. But those routines do not work well, if at all, for most other bodybuilders. This books guidance is founded on the amazing progress that Peary Rader made - around 50 pounds of natural muscle growth following 12 years of failure on other routines. The three primary characteristics of Course #1: 1) It is very effective. 2) It is up to date. 3) It is personalized.

Book excerpt: WHO ARE THEY AND WHY DO THEY DO IT? –these men who dedicate themselves to building bodies like Hellenistic statues; who crisscross the world competing for titles as grandiose yet as publicly uncelebrated (Mr. America, Mr. Universe, Mr. Olympia) as their gargantuan physiques; whose daily lives are as rigidly defined and regulated by their obsession to mold the ideal body as any other master athlete's is towards perfecting his craft. Yet, rather than the public acclaim that normally follows an athletic triumph, only their fellow muscle men know who they are and know the price they have paid to win their incredible bodies. Novelist Charles Gaines and photographer George Butler have spent the last two years trying to capture the essence of this strange, joyful, exotic world: “We have been to quite a few places tracking bodybuilders, seeing contests and putting together the materials here. If we felt at times a little like 19th-century explorers –like Doughty, perhaps, off trekking through Arabia –it was because we found bodybuilding to be as primeval and unmapped as parts of Labrador. Nobody, we discovered, had been back into it to send a report on what it was like. This struck us then as peculiar, and it still does.

Book excerpt: A Top Financial Times Recommended Business Book, The Brains and Brawn Company is the grounded, clear-sighted guide you need to blend digital and traditional business functions for long-term competitive advantage Business leaders are continually told they need to embrace digital disruption wholeheartedly to thrive in the 21st Century. Legacy companies, we hear, are all doomed to fail unless they double down on the latest digital innovations, and disruptors are ordained to take over the world. Digital innovation is the answer to everything. False! Nothing in life or business is ever that simple. In The Brains and Brawn Company: How Leading Organizations Blend the Best of Digital and Physical, venture capitalist and Stanford Business School lecturer Robert Siegel brings the digital innovation conversation back down to earth. He shows that, while important, digital is only part of the answer―and it’s never the only answer. The vast majority of successful leaders from both incumbents and disruptors focus as much on things like logistics, manufacturing, and distribution as they do on digital innovation. In fact, many established companies are successfully countering young upstarts in other creative ways, and many new organizations are learning from their older brethren. Siegel shows how to create lasting profits and growth in the smartest way possible: by creating a solid partnership between digital innovation and traditional business operations—in other words, by marrying brains and brawn. He lays out the core competencies that today’s industry leaders have mastered and explains how: Charles Schwab uses cutting-edge analytics to better serve millions of investors without violating its original code of values. Align Technology transformed orthodontia by developing creative new business models along with new products. Kaiser Permanente taps into the power of empathy to improve patient satisfaction while controlling costs. Instacart balances ownership and partnerships to balance the needs of four key constituencies. Target, Best Buy, and Home Depot found different ways to blend the best aspects of physical retail with innovative e-commerce. Desktop Metal is innovating high-volume yet affordable production methods that can revolutionize manufacturing. Filled with original research and case studies of Daimler, 23andMe, Instacart, AB InBev, Google, and many other companies, The Brains and Brawn Company: How Leading Organizations Blend the Best of Digital and Physical provides practical, proven insights and advice for bridging the gulf between digital vs. physical, disruptor vs. incumbent, startup world vs. Fortune 500, and tech culture vs. industrial culture. The Brains and Brawn Company: How Leading Organizations Blend the Best of Digital and Physical provides everything you need to set your company apart from your competitors in real and measurable ways—and take the lead in your industry for years to come.

Book excerpt: He would sell his warrior soul to possess her. . . . An alluring laird... He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart—until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length—but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve. A prisoner in time... She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side. . . .

Book excerpt: After Max Mosley decided to take the News of the World to court for invading his privacy, a friend of Rupert Murdoch asked Bernie Ecclestone 'Does Max know what he's taking on?' Ecclestone replied that he thought Mosley probably did, but he wasn't sure about Murdoch. It was a mark of the respect in which the former president of the FIA is held by those who know him best. Mosley not only won, but he has now become a formidable campaigner against the abuses of the press. Now, having been in the public eye all his life, after his parents Oswald and Diana Mosley were interned during the second world war for their political beliefs, he has decided to give his fascinating account of his extraordinary career. He gave up a promising position at the Bar to take up motor racing, initially as a driver and later as a team owner. He got to know some of the sport's most famous names, but also saw the reckless disregard for their lives shown by many organisers. Mosley went on to form a formidable partnership with Ecclestone, and he reveals in compelling detail how they set about transforming Formula One into the most glamorous, exciting and extravagant form of motorsport. His inside knowledge is unrivalled, and for any fan of the sport this account is sure to shed much new light. His often unsung work for the FIA not only made Formula One safer, it was also to have hugely beneficial consequences to motorists eveywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm Stuart McRobert. For 40-plus years I battled with attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that are commonly labeled as symptoms of three psychological disorders--muscle dysmorphia, orthorexia, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). The consequences were grave, and drove me to consider suicide. But I survived, and eventually thrived, and was finally at peace with myself and my life. In this book I explain my success story and an effective strategy for self-care. You may be able to have similar success if you're currently battling with psychological problems--especially if they are to do with your body, eating, perfectionism, or workaholism. My struggles started in earnest when I was 15 years old, in 1973. They had profoundly negative effects on my life. I wasn't dealing with personality quirks. The severity of my problems increased through the 1970s and '80s--from my early teens through my twenties. But I never thought there may be something wrong with my mental health. That I considered suicide during the 1990s and early 2000s should have made me seek help. But I thought seeking help was weakness. I needed to "man up," "pull myself together," and "get a sense of perspective." Those shame-based clich s were first inflicted on me during my upbringing, but they didn't help. There were, however, tremendously good things happening in my life during the decades of mental torment. Here are some of the riches that couldn't make me happy: Since the 1980s I've lived on a Mediterranean island that has a wonderful climate. I have a supportive wife and two children. We own a lovely home. And I work for myself from home and have had success as a writer and a publisher. The scrambling of my brain during the 40-plus years before I started therapy "stole my happiness." Finally, in September 2015, when I was 56 years old, I admitted something was profoundly wrong with me. My initial investigation--through the mainstream or medical model--revealed I'd been mentally ill since I was a teenager. I then took responsibility for my mental health problems and their consequences. My therapy started in January 2016. It gave me an alternative perspective on my so-called mental illness. That perspective is a non-medical model, to use my therapist's term. Many millions of people are trapped by mental torment. The physical effects vary, and can devastate the sufferers, those close to them, and society. Countless people self-medicate through drugs (including alcohol and nicotine), unhealthy food, work, or other addictive behaviors. Many sufferers attempt suicide, and some succeed. With the right therapy, people with mental health problems can cope and lead rewarding lives. The therapy I'm referring to has nothing to do with psychiatric drugs and institutions. I experienced it myself with great success. It started through talk therapy with a properly trained and licensed therapist. This book includes my session notes--a real-life case history. After I finished my therapy sessions, my progress continued through what I learned from some life-changing books, which I also explain. What I reveal in this book will help others with their self-therapy.
