Book Synopsis Understanding Body Shapes of Animals by : Holger Preuschoft
Download or read book Understanding Body Shapes of Animals written by Holger Preuschoft and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how and why animals evolved into particular shapes. The book identifies the physical laws which decide over the evolutionary (selective) value of body shape and morphological characters. Comparing the mechanical necessities with morphological details, the author attempts to understand how evolution works, and which sorts of limitations are set by selection. The book explains morphological traits in more biomechanical detail without getting lost in physics, or in methods. Most emphasis is placed on the proximate question, namely the identification of the mechanical stresses which must be sustained by the respective body parts, when they move the body or its parts against resistance. In the first part of the book the focus is on ‘primitive’ animals and later on the emphasis shifts to highly specialized mammals. Readers will learn more about living and fossil animals. A section of the book is dedicated to human evolution but not to produce another evolutionary tree, nor to refine a former one, but to contribute to answering the question: “WHY early humans have developed their particular body shape".
Book Synopsis The Evolution of Flight by : Georg Glaeser
Download or read book The Evolution of Flight written by Georg Glaeser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will take you on an exciting journey made up of texts and images. Spectacular, large-scale photographs printed on double pages and accompanied by explanatory texts will arouse the reader’s curiosity about evolution’s accomplishments in the world of flying: from the botanical air fleet (pollen grains, flying seeds...), over flying snakes and fish, to penguins flying underwater and humans rising into the air. Mathematician and passionate animal photographer Georg Glaser has joined forces with the experienced evolutionary biologist Hannes Paulus and the exercise physiologist and flight biophysicist Werner Nachtigall in order to approach this topic with words and pictures in a way that is both generally comprehensible and scientifically sound. Double-page by double-page, the book can be read in any order. Cross-references allow to jump easily from one double-page to another. Aside from the detailed introduction to each chapter, the text passages are usually independent from one another, and they discuss crucial moments in the evolutionary process. The double-pages provide additional information on bibliographical references and references to informative websites.
Book Synopsis Advances In Engineering Mechanics--reflections And Outlooks: In Honor Of Theodore Y-t Wu by : Daniel T Valentine
Download or read book Advances In Engineering Mechanics--reflections And Outlooks: In Honor Of Theodore Y-t Wu written by Daniel T Valentine and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-11-29 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents more than 40 original papers on recent advances in several topics in engineering mechanics presented at The Theodore Y-T Wu Symposium on Engineering Mechanics: A celebration of Professor Wu's scientific contributions for his 80th birthday. The distinguished contributors include several members of the National Academy of Engineers and the topics cover nonlinear water waves, swimming and flying in nature, biomechanics, data analysis methodology, and propulsion hydrodynamics. The papers honor the significant accomplishments of Professor Wu in Engineering Science at Caltech, particularly in the areas of nonlinear waves, hydrodynamics, biomechanics and wave-structure interaction. They review the present state of the art of engineering mechanics, and chart the future of the field from the viewpoint of civil engineering, biomechanics, geophysics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, ocean, and offshore engineering. The primary purpose of this book is to provide guidance and inspiration for those interested in continuing to advance engineering mechanics into the 21st century. To quote Professor Wu: ”The value of a book publication lies in disseminating new knowledge attained with effort and dedication from all those who participate, and in having the useful results within ready reach of students and researchers actively working in the field.”
