Book excerpt: This recent study presents a hermeneutically sophisticated examination of Jewish ways of knowing as evidenced in the writings of the Hebrew Bible. Keenly aware of the philosophical and cultural currents in epistemology from ancient history to today, O'Dowd focuses on the peculiarities of the ancient Hebraic traditions. Nowhere is it more appropriate to engage these religious and philosophical questions than through the luminous history of Hebrew wisdom and Law. After a brief introduction, each of the next six chapters explores the epistemological foundations evident in readings in the Torah (principally Deuteronomy) and Wisdom Literature (Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes). The final chapter draws these readings together, commenting when relevant on the subsequent history of Jewish and Christian writings, influenced as they are by the Western Greek tradition. On the whole, the narrative style of this investigation very clearly demonstrates the mythical, religious and ethical foundations for knowing in Israel's ancient world. The study also shows that Hebraic culture had to adapt its phenomenology of religion in the light of historical, social and cultural developments. Noting these changes, it also identifies continuity between Torah and Wisdom traditions which continue into later Jewish and Christian thought. The study demonstrates how important it is to recognize the way these unique ways of knowing often stand in contrast to rational, empirical and scientific ways of knowing in the Greek and Western world since then. While the study does not critique modern ways of knowing, it does provide many helpful ways to rethink our understanding of Hebraic religion and thought.

Will Kynes argues that Wisdom Literature is not a category used in early Jewish and Christian interpretation. It first emerged in modern scholarship, shaped by its birthplace in nineteenth-century Germany. Kynes casts new light on the traits long associated with the category, such as universalism, humanism, rationalism, empiricism, and secularism, which so closely reflect the ideals of that time. Since it was originally assembled to reflect modern ideals, it is not surprising that biblical scholars have faced serious difficulties defining the corpus on another basis or integrating it into the theology of the Old Testament. The problem, however, is not only why the texts were perceived in this one way, but that they are perceived in only one way at all. The book builds on recent theories from literary studies and cognitive science to create a new alternative approach to genre that integrates hermeneutical insight from various genre proposals. This theory is then applied to Job, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs, mapping out the complex textual network contributing to their meaning. With the death of the Wisdom Literature category, both the so-called Wisdom texts and the concept of wisdom find new life.

Book excerpt: How should traditional Judaism view the incredible accomplishments and progress made by modern science? In this volume, the authors argue that not only is a unification and integration between Torah and science possible, it is necessary and indeed one of the most important goals traditional Judaism should pursue in this generation. In fact, the well-known adage by the sages, "Believe that there is wisdom among the nations" is interpreted, following the original Hebrew, to mean that those who are capable of doing so have a duty to bring the wisdom of the nations to a state of belief, a state in which it reveals rather than conceals the Creator. To do so, the Divinity inherent in nature and man, must be revealed. Over the past century and a half there have been various approaches and attempts to find a formula for unifying Torah and science. Relying on Rabbi Ginsburgh's singular knowledge of the Torah's inner dimension--Kabbalah and Chassidut--it is explained how the wisdom of the nations, i.e., modern science in all its forms, can be seen as still underdeveloped points of light that are missing dimensions of meaning that would transform them into translucent windows through which we can gaze upon the magnificence of God and the Torah. The process by which secular wisdom is transformed and becomes part of Torah is compared to the process which transforms a non-Jew wishing into a righteous convert--making him or her into an inseparable part of the Jewish people. This approach is based on the foundational notion that originally, Torah and science, or higher, Divine wisdom, and lower, mundane wisdom constituted a single, unified whole known as the primordial Torah. Subsequently they were separated by the Almighty Himself into two different categories, just as the waters were divided into the higher and lower waters on the second day of creation. Over the millennia, the greatest of the sages have labored to reunify the two categories: study of the Divine and the study of nature and humanity, even as the knowledge of nature changed from age to age. As we approach the end of the sixth millennia, we are called upon to work towards a unifying model that can bring Torah and science to complement and inspire one another.

Interpreters have produced different lists of wisdom psalms of greatly varying lengths, and individual scholars often change their choices over time. Cheung re-examines the issues at stake in identifying this group of psalms in order to better describe the configuration of this psalmic genre. Past scholarship has failed to settle this issue because of the use of unfit criteria and an ill-understood concept of genre. With the aid of the concepts of 'family resemblance' and 'prototypes', this book proposes to define 'wisdom psalms' as a psalm family which is characterised by a wisdom-oriented constellation of its generic features. Three such features are identified after a fresh assessment of the most typical characteristics of 'wisdom literature'. This proposed method is put to test in the extensive study of seven psalms (37, 49, 73, 128, 32, 39, and 19) and the three criteria are verified to be suitable descriptors of the 'wisdom psalm' family. Cheung also explores questions related to the wisdom-cult disparity, Joban parallels as wisdom indicators, and the wisdom-orientation of 'torah psalms'.

By probing Ben Sira s ideas about election, this book suggests that Ben Sira does not collapse the traditional sapiential dichotomy wisdom/folly into a dualistic worldview, and that his understanding of the relation between Wisdom and Torah proves to be far more subtle than previous interpretations have allowed. The study demonstrates that the concept of election enables a profitable discussion of the relation of Wisdom and Torah in the thought of this pivotal Second Temple sage.

These texts were selected on the basis of their epistemological content (each confronts the relationship between virtue and prosperity), and their canonical placement within the Psalter (each begins one of the Psalter’s five “Books”). We explore the implications of their respective epistemological features for our understanding of the canonical structure of the Psalter. After developing a diagnostic method for the identification and analysis of the epistemological features within a biblical text, we apply it to each of the four psalms, and discuss their epistemological qualities with respect to their canonical placement in the Psalter. We find that an epistemic progression develops across the canonical ordering of the four psalms. While the psalmists are increasingly forthright in acknowledging the moral paradox that the righteous often suffer, while the wicked can prosper, they engage this paradox with ever more sophisticated responses. Although Yhwh is ultimately the source of all wisdom, human beings can facilitate their acquisition of knowledge by seeking him out intentionally, by questioning him directly, and by observing him with a heart focused on learning.
