Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years removed from her first long-distance hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, Julie, aka Stopwatch, is ready to embark on another thru-hike, this time following the white blazes of the Appalachian Trail, a 2181 mile continuous footpath from Georgia to Maine. She is accompanied by her husband, Matt, aka Optimist, for whom it is his second thru-hike of the AT. They are both burnt out from stressful jobs and are both hopeful that the simplicity of the trail life will recharge their batteries, especially since they have experience on their side. For Julie, it is a chance to improve the person that she came to be and came to dislike, and for Matt, it is a chance to relive old memories while living the trail life he'd come to love. While they could never predict all that would unfold over the months ahead, with volatility in the weather and in their moods, they expect the trail to change the way they see themselves and the world around them. They are also not alone on the trail. Each day they are presented with new perspectives from the varied cast of trail characters hiking alongside them, a few of which have a lasting impression on their hike. This book is for those that appreciate challenges that lead us down the path of self-honesty, who are willing to join Matt and Julie as they make their way through rainy weather and rocky terrain, as expectations meet reality, as they meet new people along the way, and as they search for meaning in it all, all the while following the white blazes of the Appalachian Trail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Double White Blazes: Two white painted vertical dashes, usually on trees or rocks, one above the other, signals an obscure turn, route change, an incoming side trail or other situation that requires you to be especially alert to changes in direction. Sometimes the two blazes will offset in the direction of the turn with the top one signaling the direction by either being on the right or left."Appalachian Trail Conservancy, appalachiantrail.orgWhen hiking the Appalachian trail, you are guided, going north or south by a series of painted white brush strokes. Placed what would be considered mostly eye level or as high off the ground as permitted. Mostly trees or rocks, maybe boulders or posts, a building. They guide the novice day hiker or the repeat thru-hiker on their daily journey. Giving no thought to the validity of the marks, they guide you and give you direction to your next destination. A single brushstroke or blaze means to keep going, you're on the right path. A double indicates a change in direction ahead. A double with the top blaze higher on the left means you are going left and a double with the top blaze higher on the right means you are going right. I have never seen a three-blaze marker but a single blaze on top and a double on the bottom means the beginning and a double on top and single on the bottom means the end. Your trail may often also have a variety of other colored blazes. Blue indicates water source, and that trail should lead to freshwater. Many side trails may also have blazes in different colors which you may choose to do a side excursion. Whatever the side trail color is does not guarantee you will be directed back to the white blazes of the Appalachian Trail.I have even begun to see an almost vocabulary worthy combination of pictograms representing different symbols or characters being used in place of a simple brush stroke. Whatever the mark may be though, they are all placed there to guide us along our journey.Life doesn't have trail signs or markers to indicate when you should change course or make decisions, but you need to learn how to look for them anyway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000, inspired by her father, Leslie Mass decided she would turn a lifelong fantasy into reality. At the age of 59 she began to train for a grueling journey ? a thru-hike of the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail. In Beauty May She Walk chronicles Leslie?s struggles and triumphs during her hike. On the trail, Leslie struggles with how to balance the needs of her family and friends while making the trail a priority; how to shed years of social conditioning that dictate how a woman should act; and how to know when to ask for help, while understanding that sometimes, help has to come from within. For the first few weeks, Leslie learns how to pitch a tent in the rain, keep animals out of her food, and lighten the load on her back. As the terrain toughens, she struggles to physically keep up with the trail community she depends on socially to keep going, and realizes the difficulty of maintaining her obligations to family and friends while focusing her efforts on putting one foot in front of the other, every day. And after September 11, 2001, she copes with being seemingly the only hiker on the trails for miles, eventually forcing her to change her definition of ?hiking her own hike.? A suburban college professor, Leslie is just like any other woman you might pass on the grocery aisle. Her story is an inspiring physical and mental journey to reach the goal of a lifetime.

Book excerpt: From “a true master,” a historical fantasy featuring an Irish adventurer caught up in the epic struggle for the throne of England (Kirkus Reviews). After fleeing Constantinople and the wrath of the Emperor, Raef Corbanson has washed up with his companions on the coast of Normandy. His former patron Gunnhild is dead, and Raef is commanded to return to his father’s hall in Jorvik, in England. Duke Richard of Normandy has sent his sister Emma to be wife to Ethelred of Wessex, the King of England. But other powers have designs on the island kingdom; Sweyn Forkbeard, king of Denmark and Raef’s old shipmate, would be King of England, too. And Ethelred has other sons, older sons from his first marriage. Raef cannot escape this web of power; he owes a debt to Emma and her brother for aiding him. He owes fealty to Ethelred, for Jorvik is part of England, and Raef intends to rule the city as his father once did. And he owes an older, stronger, loyalty to Sweyn, for they are kin. “Holland’s battle scenes are brilliantly, viscerally detailed, and she’s even better in quieter scenes that provide illuminating contrasts . . . If you love history, do not under any circumstances overlook or underestimate Cecelia Holland.” —Kirkus Reviews
