Book excerpt: Char thought she had a perfect life. She was married to a successful surgeon who was kind, committed, and willing to provide Char with anything that made her happy. What made her happy, besides her perfect marriage, was her dressage horse, Mystic, (never mind the cost). And now that a new trainer was moving to Blue Ribbon from Hamburg, Germany, she would have the ability to take her dressage riding to the highest level possible. With everything going so perfectly, Char shouldn’t have had any reason not to be happy. But something had been missing in her relationship with Dr. Kelley, (otherwise known around the hospital as “Dr. Dreamy”), and she couldn’t figure out what it was. When Char finally met Petra, the new dressage trainer, Char became more than just a little star-struck. She was, quite frankly, infatuated, and wanted to spend every waking second at the barn…and with her. What was going on? Char was afraid of the answer. What would happen to her and her perfect life? How would she be able to afford her privileged lifestyle and her horse (including the dressage lessons,) that she had grown so accustomed to enjoying? Perhaps she was simply going through a mid-life crisis or was in awe of the new trainer from Germany. Ultimately, Char knew she must find out. She became more afraid of not knowing, than of what the truth might reveal.

She leaves her boyfriend Duke down in Southern California with the promise that he will join her up north as soon as he gets a transfer with the radio station that he works for. For a while, things are working out perfectly as Valerie shows a lot of talent for horseback riding, and she is able to help around the stable in addition to being a promising prospect with a future riding career. It all falls apart one afternoon when the horse she is riding, Erde, becomes spooked and Valerie falls off and ends up in the hospital, again, only this time with a concussion. While she is hospitalized, Duke, with the most imperfect timing, calls to confess that he really doesn’t want to give up his surfer lifestyle and move up north anymore, essentially breaking up with Valerie. Hurt physically and emotionally, with no prospect of living on her own, Valerie is ready to throw in the towel and head back down south. She has no real job, no boyfriend, and no place of her own. In Better Before Than Forever, Valerie must decide if she should keep moving forward, or try to go back and piece her life together, the way it was before. Throughout it all, Valerie learns a valuable lesson about moving forward and learns that sometimes, things aren’t necessarily better in the past…

Book Synopsis Motown Encyclopedia by : Graham Betts
Download or read book Motown Encyclopedia written by Graham Betts and published by AC Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motown means different things to different people. The mere mention of perhaps the most iconic record label in history is often enough to invoke memories and mental images of Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Jackson 5, The Supremes and numerous others. With each group recalled, there is an accompanying piece of music of the mind, from Baby Love, My Girl, Signed Sealed Delivered, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, ABC and Tears Of A Clown and countless more. Quite often, you can ask people what kind of music they like and they will simply answer ‘Motown’, and both they, and you, know exactly what is meant. Or rather, what is implied. The Motown they are invariably thinking of is the label that dominated the charts in the mid 1960s with a succession of radio friendly, dance orientated hits, most of which were written and produced by the trio of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. This period is referred to, naturally enough, as the Golden Era, when Motown was not only the dominant force in its home city of Detroit but carried The Sound of Young America all around the world. The kind of music that had them Dancing In the Street from Los Angeles to London, Miami to Munich and San Francisco to Sydney. It was the kind of music that attracted scores of imitators; some good, some not so good. The kind of music that appealed to the public and presidents alike, and still does. It was that Motown that this book was intended to be about. However, when you start digging deeper into the Motown story, you realise that throughout its life (which, for the purposes of this book, is its formation in 1959 through to its sale in 1988) it was constantly trying other musical genres, looking to grab hits out of jazz, country, pop, rock, middle of the road and whatever else might be happening at the time. Of course it wasn’t particularly successful at some of the other genres, although those who claim Motown never did much in the rock market conveniently overlook the healthy sales figures achieved by Rare Earth, the group, and focus instead on the total sales achieved on Rare Earth, the label. This book, therefore, contains biographies of all 684 artists who had releases on Motown and their various imprints, as well as biographies of 16 musicians, 23 producers, 19 writers and 13 executives. There are also details of the 50 or so labels that Motown owned, licensed to or licensed from. All nine films and the 17 soundtracks are also featured. Every Motown single and album and EP that made the Top Ten of the pop charts in either the US or UK also have their own entries, with 222 singles, 84 albums and five EPs being featured. Finally, there are 36 other entries, covering such topics as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Motortown Revues, Grammy Awards and the most played Motown songs on radio. The 1,178 entries cover every aspect of Motown and more – of the link between Granny in The Beverly Hillbillies and Wonder Woman, of the artists from Abbey Tavern Singers to Zulema, and the hits from ABC to You Really Got A Hold On Me. The Motown Encyclopedia is the story of Motown Records; Yesterday, Today, Forever.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke Fate is a funny thing. It brings us together, tears us apart, brings us back together, makes us do stupid things that people find out about...then it keeps you stuck in a damn hospital bed, in a coma, while the love of your life goes to Singapore. And the cherry on the sundae - I obviously couldn't talk to her to tell her the truth. Then fate just adds to that already big steaming pile of 'fate crap' and you wake up and lay in your hospital bed watching the love of your life get sick on television thousands of miles away. But you can change your path so that fate is actually a good thing - right? At least that's what I'm going to try to do. Isla I never wanted to see his stupid face again. I mean, I hope he got better, but his face was still stupid. And now I'm in hospital and it's all his fault - well, kinda. Then he turns up and I'm stuck with him because he's keeping us all safe! I've got a choice to make now - do I forgive him or not? Do I believe that it wasn't what it looked like? Yes. Do I believe that he knows how stupid he was? Yes. Am I ready to walk away from the man that I've been in love with for most of my life? No. And now there's more for us to fight for. Our lives, our family's lives, and our babies lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Book excerpt: Romania stays vacant, and the people stay far away from the predator of the night. Lucian stays in his castle in slumber by day and attacks by night. He finds himself craving for blood, but what he finds is beyond a surprise. Young Erin mistakenly flees out as the night grows darker. Yet the presence stays colder. What this vampire is wanting is something he cant take away. But a love blossoms from out of the shadows, and the attraction is more than a simple feeding. In this poetic romance, you see prey meet the predator. With action enticing the chapters and twisting, chilling details, this is Forever More. And love casts all fear aside in Forever No Less. It is about a mothers instinct and a childs cry. Erin is alone, and her lover is nowhere to be found. Doubt catches her off guard. And the search for truth causes her fears to become a cycle of ruin. Time remains unfazed and changes us in the most fascinating ways. The journey is more than what the eye can see. What is is not reality. And what was comes knocking. The door for hope is one to be yet opened when words remain unspoken. Erin finds a family curse and a path to the other side. She carries on and walks to the light. Lucian is searching for his lost child. Fate shows the destination. And hope is not compensated. Forever and always, time shows to be an advantage of surprising demands. What is to be of the land of Eden? Will all be free? Here beauty is but a figment of imagery. It is a kingdom of royal decrees, and fate becomes a mockery. An enemy changes the heart of one hero. But good has plans to overcome all evil and to forgive all against them. Love triumphs, and hate breeds. What youre expecting is not a clichd ending, but a story of the ages. Words bounce for off these pages. And faith has unsatisfying wages. Death is a foe and cannot prevail. Sink your teeth into love everlasting. For what history shows is a passage way unto the unknown.
Download or read book Letting Go of Forever written by Jim Rule and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim and Peg Rule were living active lives when without warning, back pain signaled the onset of cancer and in less than nine months, Jim's life partner of thirty-seven years was gone. Like many others who have lost a loved one to premature death, Jim faced the difficult challenge of going on with his life. As folded socks, toothbrushes, and shampoo became near-sacred objects, Jim wondered why God had not prevented Peg's death. In this collection of poignant essays, Jim not only shares the thoughts and feelings that express his sorrow as he walked through the journey of grief, but also provides insight and sensitivity into the workings of God and how He provides assurance and courage, even in the face of great tragedy. Written in two parts aftermath and individuation Jim details the beginning of his solitary life, how he muddled through the holidays and other firsts, and how he learned to establish his individuality, separate and distinct from whom he had become with his wife. For anyone traveling through the darkness after the shadow of death, Letting Go of Forever touches the soul, inspires a broken heart, and encourages the belief that better days will come.

Ainslie Campbell’s life should be idyllic. She has a fulfilling career as a respected and well-loved veterinarian in her hometown., the adoration of three imperfect cats and a happy dog named after a TV star, and the gorgeous landscape of the Scottish Highlands to comfort her. She also has debt growing by the day, a house about to be sold from under her, and guardianship of her rebellious – and also pregnant – teenaged sister. But there is a glimmer of hope: Catrione Kerr, her feisty godmother, invites Ainslie to move into Craigwarren, Catrione’s family home, and one of Ainslie’s favorite places. There’s one catch. She’ll have to temporarily share the house with an American businessman and Catrione’s long-lost heir, Ewan Portman. Ewan, like his father before him, has no desire to live in Scotland. Ever. He’s already had to put his dream career on hold to sort out this unexpected and unwanted inheritance. Eager to get back to the States and his well-ordered life, he’d prefer to walk away from the old pile, despite the objections of his mesmerizingly beautiful Highland housemate. Scotland, however, has its own plans, and soon ancient legends of a kelpie in Craigwarren’s loch, a brownie sprite who lives in the barn, and a family curse only he can break, immerse Ewan in an unfamiliar, but enchanting world that leaves both his dreams and his heart vulnerable to Highland magic . . . and most especially Ainslie. Except Ewan can’t stay in Scotland forever, not with his future at stake. Nor can he fix all Craigwarren’s problems, no matter how desperately he might want to. Even Highland magic has limits to its power. Doesn’t it?
