Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music is such an important part of Advent and Christmas. Can you imagine Advent without "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel"? How about Christmas without carols like "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night," and "Joy to the World"? It pleases the Lord Jesus when we sing of his coming with carols we know by heart. It pleases him even more when we think about the words we are singing. In 24 reflections on well-known carols and Christmas songs, James Howell explores the birth of Jesus. He ponders the meaning of certain phrases from these songs and relates them to our daily lives. The four weeks of devotions are arranged by topic: The Place The Men (Joseph, shepherds, magi) The Mother The Child A guide for weekly discussion is included. Join Howell in this rich remembrance for the Advent and Christmas seasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s in the dark? Countless generations have gazed up at the night sky and asked this question—the same question that cosmologists ask themselves as they study the universe. The answer turns out to be surprising and rich. The space between stars is filled with an exotic substance called “dark matter” that exerts gravity but does not emit, absorb, or reflect light. The space between galaxies is rife with “dark energy” that creates a sort of cosmic antigravity causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. Together, dark matter and dark energy account for 95 percent of the content of the universe. News reporters and science journalists routinely talk about these findings using terms that they assume we have a working knowledge of, but do you really understand how astronomers arrive at their findings or what it all means? Cosmologists face a conundrum: how can we study substances we cannot see, let alone manipulate? A powerful approach is to observe objects whose motion is influenced by gravity. Einstein predicted that gravity can act like a lens to bend light. Today we see hundreds of cases of this—instances where the gravity of a distant galaxy distorts our view of a more distant object, creating multiple images or spectacular arcs on the sky. Gravitational lensing is now a key part of the international quest to understand the invisible substance that surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the universe together. A Ray of Light in a Sea of Dark Matter offers readers a concise, accessible explanation of how astronomers probe dark matter. Readers quickly gain an understanding of what might be out there, how scientists arrive at their findings, and why this research is important to us. Engaging and insightful, Charles Keeton gives everyone an opportunity to be an active learner and listener in our ever-expanding universe. Watch a video with Charles Keeton: Watch video now. Book excerpt: Still in The Dark Streets Shining is the heartbreaking and inspiring story of a boy who grew up to be a spiritual and community leader in Bethlehem. Bishara Awad was just a child when his father was killed during the Israeli-Arab war of 1948. After the family fled their Jerusalem home, Bishara and his siblings grew up as refugees. When Bishara learned how to forgive, he became a firebrand of faith and hope. Rising to the many challenges, he launched Bethlehem Bible College, the first Bible college in the West Bank. Through the despair and dashed hopes of repeated wars and opposition, Bishara's story conveys how Palestinian Christians continue to live their faith and envision a better future, while wrestling with questions such as these:Is peace possible in Palestine and Israel? How do theologians in other parts of the world affect the lives of their fellow Christians in the Holy Land? How does one stand for justice, while also preaching forgiveness?Endorsements:A dramatic, dangerous, and deeply meaningful storyline that reads like a biographical thriller. Through the real-life personal story of Bishara Awad and his family, you will gain insight into the Middle East, its history, and its people, and I think you will also gain insight into current realities that affect you right now, wherever you live. - Brian D. McLaren, author of "Faith After Doubt"When myopic self-centered eschatological and political doctrines blind us to human compassion and love, both must be unmasked and challenged. Please, leave the lofty heights of ideology and presumption and listen as Bishara Awad and Mercy Aiken narrate the authentic story of real human beings caught in the crossfire of both. - Paul Young, author of "The Shack"This is a story that is as riveting as it is historically important. - Gary M. Burge, PhD, Calvin Theological Seminary; author of "Whose Land, Whose Promise?"Evangelical Christians need to hear Bishara Awad's story. - Brian Zahnd, author of "Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God"

Book excerpt: ‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away’ (Luke 21:33) At the weekday Eucharist we read from sections of all four gospels in the course of the liturgical year. The reflections in this book are based predominantly on the gospel readings for the weekdays of the coming liturgical year, 2021/22, with occasional references to the first reading. They follow the sequence of the weeks of the calendar year, beginning on the 29th November, Monday of the first week of Advent. In the course of the liturgical year, the gospel readings present us with a significant selection of the words and deeds of Jesus from all four gospels. In and through these gospel readings we encounter the living word of the risen Lord to his church. There is rich fare here to nourish our faith life and to help us to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord. These short reflections attempt to listen to the Scripture passages on their own terms, while showing how they can continue to speak to our church and our world today. Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. It is hoped that these reflections will serve as a help to prayer for people of faith. They may also be of service to priests who seek to offer a short reflection on the gospel reading of the day to their parishioners. In parishes where, from time to time, there is a Liturgy of the Word in place of Mass, the Minister of the Word might read the corresponding reflection after the gospel reading. On most week days, the same readings are proclaimed in the church throughout the world in the setting of the Eucharist. To read and reflect upon the readings for the weekdays of the liturgical year is to go on a spiritual journey with the universal church.

Book excerpt: What is the condition of the public reading of scripture in your church? If you are searching for new ways to present meaningful scripture reading in the worship setting, this book will help you. The creating of a speaking choir is one way to elevate oral reading of scripture. This can be a small or large group, depending on the talents and size of your congregation. Once a choir is formed, it needs direction and reading material. This book offers both. The author provides 30 choral readings and directions on making the choir an effective ministry in your congregation. The readings are based on Old and New Testament scripture. Topics range from Christmas and Easter to Mother's Day, praise, missions, and service. You can make the Word of God come to life in the worship and special programs of your church. In this book Robert A. Allen draws from his many years of experience in speech and drama techniques to offer helpful suggestions to enable the church to implement such a program. Dr. Richard L. Paige Jr., executive secretary Minnesota Baptist Association Editor, North Star Baptist Robert A. Allen is chairman of the speech department and director of the Pillsbury Players, Pillsbury College, Owatonna, Minnesota. He has organized speaking choirs in churches, camps, high schools, and colleges.
