Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beta decay endpoint energy measurements of the neutron deficient cesium isotopes were done using an energy spectrum shape fitting technique. This was a departure from the typical method of endpoint energy analysis, the Fermi-Kurie plot. A discussion of the shape fitting procedure and its improved features are discussed. These beta endpoint measurements have led to total decay energies (Q/sub EC/) of the neutron deficient 119 123Cs isotopes. The total decay energies of /sup 122m/Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 6.95 +- 0.25 MeV) and 119Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 6.26 +- 0.29 MeV) were new measurements. The total decay energies of 123Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 4.05 +- 0.18 MeV), /sup 122g/Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 7.05 +- 0.18 MeV), 121Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 5.21 +- 0.22 MeV), and 12°Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 7.38 +- 0.23 MeV) were measurements with significantly improved uncertainties as compared to the literature. Further, a combination of the energy levels derived from previous literature gamma-gamma coincident measurements and the experimental beta-coincident gamma decay energies has supported an improved level scheme for 121Xe and the proposal of three new energy levels in 119Xe. Comparison of the experimental cesium mass excesses (determined with our Q/sub EC/ values and known xenon mass excesses) with both the literature and theoretical predicted values showed general agreement except for 12°Cs. Possible explanations for this deviation are discussed.

Book excerpt: Three Si stripped detectors (DSSD) surrounded by 16 Ge detectors (SeGA) were used to study the beta-delayed decay of 20Mg, 23Si and 22Si near the proton drip-line. These nuclei were produced at NSCL (MSU, USA) using the A1900 and the RFFS separator. The decay scheme (beta-p) of 20Mg was built by measuring the protons emitted in coincidence with three gamma-ray transitions in the daughter 19Ne. The level scheme of 20Na from the present work is in good agreement with previous measurements. Half-life measurements performed with proton and gamma gates were not conclusive. In the same way, the decay scheme of 23Si was built by measuring protons in coincidence with the gamma-rays emitted by the three first states in 22Mg. Gamma-rays at 332 keV (21Na) were observed and confirms the beta-2p branch. A transition at 1633 keV (20Ne) could correspond to the expected beta-3p channel. The IAS measured at 11.7 (4) MeV, completed the multiplet (A=23, T=5/2). The IMME was applied, leading to a new mass measurement of 23Si, 23.27 (7) MeV. For 22Si, a gamma-ray transition at 596 keV (20Na) allowed the identification of the beta-2p branch. 25 new proton-unbound states were identified in 22Al, and the IAS was measured at 9.09 (8) MeV. Mass of 22Si (0+) was deduced from the ft value for the superallowed Fermi decay from the ground state to its IAS in 22Al. The S2p value at 900 (158) keV doesn't allow a 2-proton radioactivity, in contradiction with several theoretical predictions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutron deficient isotopes 117-121Xe, 117-124Cs, and 122-124Ba were produced by a beam of 28Si from the LBNL SuperHILAC on a target of natMo. The isotopes were mass separated and their beta decay schemes were measured with a Total Absorption Spectrometer (TAS). The beta strengths derived from these data decreased dramatically to levels above ≈1 MeV for the even-even decays; 3-4 MeV for even-Z, odd-N decays; 4-5 MeV for the odd-Z, even-N decays; and 7-8 MeV for the odd-Z, odd-N decays. The decreasing strength to higher excitation energies in the daughters contradicts the predictions of the Gross Theory of Beta Decay. The integrated beta strengths are instead found to be consistent with shell model predictions where the single-particle beta strengths are divided amoung many low-lying levels. The experimental beta strengths determined here have been used calculate the half-lives of 143 neutron deficient nuclei with Z=51-64 to a precision of 20% with respect to the measured values.
