Book excerpt: Preface AS a preface is the only place where an author can with propriety explain a purpose or apologize for shortcomings, I venture to avail myself of the privilege to make a statement for the benefit of my readers. As the first part of "An Old-Fashioned Girl" was written in 1869, the demand for a sequel, in beseeching little letters that made refusal impossible, rendered it necessary to carry my heroine boldly forward some six or seven years into the future. The domestic nature of the story makes this audacious proceeding possible; while the lively fancies of my young readers will supply all deficiencies, and overlook all discrepancies. This explanation will, I trust, relieve those well-regulated minds, who cannot conceive of such literary lawlessness, from the bewilderment which they suffered when the same experiment was tried in a former book. The "Old-Fashioned Girl" is not intended as a perfect model, but as a possible improvement upon [Page] the Girl of the Period, who seems sorrowfully ignorant or ashamed of the good old fashions which make woman truly beautiful and honored, and, through her, render home what it should be,-a happy place, where parents and children, brothers and sisters, learn to love and know and help one another. If the history of Polly's girlish experiences suggests a hint or insinuates a lesson, I shall feel that, in spite of many obstacles, I have not entirely neglected my duty toward the little men and women, for whom it is an honor and a pleasure to write, since in them I have always found my kindest patrons, gentlest critics, warmest friends. Book excerpt: "An Old-Fashioned Girl" tells the story of Polly Milton, a young girl from the countryside who goes to visit her wealthy and sophisticated friends in the city. The novel is structured in two parts, with the first part focusing on Polly's childhood visit and the second part on her experiences as a young woman. In the first part, Polly stays with the Shaw family, including Tom, Maud, and Fanny. She is initially seen as old-fashioned and unsophisticated compared to her more fashionable city friends. However, her kindness, honesty, and good-hearted nature soon win over the Shaw family, and she becomes a beloved member of their household. The novel explores the contrast between Polly's simple, virtuous upbringing and the more worldly values of her city friends. Polly's influence on the Shaws and her ability to maintain her integrity in the face of societal pressures serve as central themes. In the second part of the book, Polly returns to the city as a young woman, and the story follows her experiences as she navigates the challenges of adulthood, including romance, career aspirations, and the importance of staying true to oneself. Polly's character development is a central focus as she matures and finds her place in the world. "An Old-Fashioned Girl" is known for its moral and ethical themes, as well as its portrayal of the importance of character and virtue. It contrasts the values of simplicity and authenticity with the superficiality of social conventions. The novel also explores themes of friendship, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Louisa May Alcott's "An Old-Fashioned Girl" is a charming and heartwarming coming-of-age story that continues to resonate with readers for its timeless lessons and the enduring appeal of its characters.

Set in late nineteenth century, the work presents Polly who comes to the city and lives with a rich urban family. How her simplicity and zest for life affects all those around her is the main focus of the work. That the material gains are not the only important factors of life is amply manifested. It further teaches about the duties that one owes to their family.

She is largely content to remain on the fringes of their social life but exerts a powerful influence over their emotional lives and family relations. The novel was the basis of a 1949 musical film starring Gloria Jean as Polly. Over the next six years, Polly visits the Shaws every year and comes to be considered a member of the family. Later, Polly comes back to the city to become a music teacher and struggles with professional issues and internal emotions. Later in the book, Polly finds out that the prosperous Shaws are on the brink of bankruptcy, and she guides them to the realization that wholesome family life is the only thing they will ever need, not money or decoration. With the comfort of the ever-helpful Polly, the family gets to change for the better and to find a happier life for all of them. After being rejected by his fiancée, Trix, Tom procures a job out West, with Polly's brother Ned, and heads off to help his family and compensate for all the money he has wasted in frivolous expenditures. At that point in the book, we see that Polly and Tom seem to have developed strong feelings for one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1870, Louisa May Alcott and her younger sister Abby May Alcott began a fourteen-month tour of Europe. Louisa had already made her mark as a writer; May was on the verge of a respected art career. Little Women Abroad gathers a generous selection of May’s drawings along with all of the known letters written by the two Alcott sisters during their trip. More than thirty drawings are included, nearly all of them previously unpublished. Of the seventy-one letters collected here, more than three-quarters appear in their entirety for the first time. Daniel Shealy’s supporting materials add detail and context to the people, places, and events referenced in the letters and illustrations. By the time of the Alcott sisters’ sojourn, Louisa’s Little Women was already an international success, and her most recent work, An Old-Fashioned Girl, was selling briskly. Louisa was now a grand literary lioness on tour. She would compose Little Men while in Europe, and her European letters would form the basis of her travel book Shawl Straps. If Louisa’s letters reveal a writer’s eye, then May’s demonstrate an eye for color, detail, and composition. Although May had prior art training in Boston, she came into her own only during her studies with European masters. When at a loss for words, she took her drawing pen in hand. These letters of two important American artists, one literary, the other visual, tell a vibrant story at the crossroads of European and American history and culture.

Book excerpt: First published in two parts between 1869 and 1870, An Old Fashioned Girl follows Polly, a simple country girl, during two visits to the big city of Boston. Polly's stay with the rich and sophisticated Shaw family shows her that first impressions--namely flashy clothes and loud personalities--are what people in the city are judged by. Book excerpt: Rose Campbell, tired and ill, has come to live at "The Aunt Hill" after the death of her beloved father. Six aunts fussing and fretting over her are bad enough, but what is a quiet 13-year-old girl to do with seven boisterous boy cousins? Most YA books of a modern turn would have had Rose rush about flirting like mad and knocking down walls with her fists in her ardor to be independent and find love. But, the lost art of writing a pleasant character whose only wish is to be worth something and to love someone worth loving is not found in most modern fiction. LM Alcott writes with firm, frank beliefs that are openly expressed and understood: Women should be independent but not harsh; Men should be driven and not dissipate; Children should be loved and not neglected; And, life should be lived uprightly to the best extent of your gifts and not lazily to the disparaging of your talents. Most of all, she wants her readers to know that love isn't always the grand illusion that we build for ourselves, and the handsome hopes we have don't always happen, much to our betterment in some cases, that the ordinary and good is surprisingly the best option. All in all, this is what every young person should read, for good character and honesty is overlooked in today's society for quick wit mixed with malice and originality to the great chagrin of us all.Rose is all grown up with adult decisions to make. How shoud she live her life? In a hedonistic pursuit of pleasure or in a life of helpfulness to others. She has a fortune to spend any way she likes. Marriage looms before her and she must choose from among the eligible young men in her social circle--including her cousins. She not only looks for someone to love, but someone to respect. It was the romance between Archie and Phebe that I remembered best about this novel and I wanted to see if I had distorted the story in my memory. I hadn't. It still moved me. Still had romance.I could relate to Rose' social fling. Late nights, dancing partners, young men going off to smoke and drink then being too drunk to drive home. There was enjoyment in the social whirl as well as a wish to not be partnered with someone who was irresponsible.Recommended especially for Christian parents looking for a love story for their children without graphic sexual scenes or violence.
