Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Voices in Ireland examines the letters and problems sent in by women to two Irish women's magazines in the 1950s and 60s, discussing them within their wider social and historical context. In doing so, it provides a unique insight into one of the few forums for female expression in Ireland during this period. Although in these decades more Irish women than ever before participated in paid work, trade unions and voluntary organizations, their representation in politics and public and their workforce participation remained low. Meanwhile, women who came of age from the late 1950s experienced a freedom which their mothers and aunts - married or single, in the workplace or the home - had never known. Diary and letters pages and problem pages in Irish-produced magazines in the 1950s and 60s enabled women from all walks of life to express their opinions and to seek guidance on the social changes they saw happening around them. This book, by examining these communications, gives a new insight into the history of Irish women, and also contributes to the ongoing debate about what women's magazines mean for women's history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuart brings his story to the present time in his final book of this trilogy a time when little girls wore dresses and hats to church, the United States was experiencing growing pains of its own and history, culture, and technology were evolving into what would become present-day America. Beginning in 1957, this book chronicles Stuart's life as he, along with several thousand other officers, were RIFed. He then enlisted as a sergeant and began a new life at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. During this time, he would have a 14 months unaccompanied tour to Korea. Returning to Fort Bliss, he would eventually retire as a Lieutenant Colonel in El Paso and enter the civilian world to become a successful commercial realtor. El Paso remains his home to this day. As son, husband, father, grandfather, and now great-grandfather, he looks back at the shaping of his own life and the tumultuous times in which he has lived. His keen insight and observations of this historical period provide an intimate glimpse of the world as it has changed and evolved throughout the past several decades.

Book excerpt: The Long Road Home is a companion work to the recently published book on the prisoner of war experience in Southeast Asia-Honor Bound by Stuart I. Rochester and Frederick Kiley. The two books were prepared at the request of former Deputy Secretary of Defense William P. Clements, Jr. Some of the early research and drafts of a few chapters are the contribution of Wilber W Hoare, Jr., and Ernest H. Giusti, former JCS historians who helped initiate the project. Davis carried forward the research and writing to completion over a period of many years and is entitled to the fullest credit for production of the final text and documentation. This history of Washington's role in shaping prisoner of war policy during the Vietnam War reveals the difficult, often emotional, and vexing nature of a problem that engaged the attention of the highest officials of the U.S. government, including the president. It examines frictions and disagreements between the State and Defense Departments and within Defense itself as a sometimes conflicted organization struggled to cope with an imposing array of policy issues: efforts to ameliorate the brutal conditions to which the American captives were subjected; relations with families of prisoners in captivity; the proper mix of quiet diplomacy and aggressive publicity; and planning for the prisoners' return. At a pivotal juncture the Department of Defense exerted a major influence on overall policy through its insistence in 1969 that the government "Go Public" with information about the plight of prisoners held by the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong. There is evidence that this powerful campaign contributed to the gradual improvement in the treatment of the prisoners and to their safe return in 1973. The detailed account of negotiations with the North Vietnamese for the withdrawal of American forces from South Vietnam makes clear how important in all U.S. calculations was securing the release of the prisoners.

Book excerpt: Across half a century, from the division of Germany through the end of the Cold War, a cohort of thirty women from the small German town of Schönebeck in what used to be the GDR circulated among themselves a remarkable collective archive of their lives: a Rundbrief, or bulletin, containing hundreds of letters and photographs. This book draws on that unprecedented resource, complemented by a set of interviews, to paint a rich portrait of “ordinary” life in postwar Germany. It shows how these women—whether reflecting on their experiences as Nazi-era schoolchildren or witnessing reunification—were united by their complex interactions with official power and their commitment to sustaining a shared German identity as they made the most of their everyday lives in both the GDR and the Federal Republic.

Book excerpt: Born in Belfast during World War II, raised in a working-class Protestant family, and educated on scholarship at Queen's University, writer Stewart Parker's story is in many ways the story of his generation. Other aspects of his personal history, though, such as the amputation of his left leg at age 19, helped to create an extraordinarily perceptive observer and commentator. Steeped in American popular culture as a child and young adult, he spent five years teaching in the United States before returning to Belfast in August 1969, the same week British troops responded to sectarian disturbances there. Parker had developed a sense of writing as a form of political action in the highly charged atmosphere of the US in the late 1960s, which he applied in many and varied capacities throughout the worst years of the Troubles to express his own socialist and secular vision of Northern Irish potential. As a young aspiring poet and novelist, he supported himself with free-lance work that brought him into contact with institutions ranging from BBC Northern Ireland to the Irish Times (for which he wrote personal columns and the music review feature High Pop) and from the Queen's University Extramural Department to Long Kesh internment camp (where his creative writing students included Gerry Adams). It is as a playwright, however, that Parker earned a permanent spot in the literary canon with drama that encapsulates his experience of Northern Ireland in the 1970s. Marilynn Richtarik's Stewart Parker: A Life illuminates the genesis, development, and meaning of such classic plays as Spokesong, Northern Star, and Pentecost - works that continue to shed light on the North's past, present, and future - in the context of Parker's life and times. Meticulously researched and engagingly written, this critical biography rewards general readers and specialists alike.

Book excerpt: “No need to get all huffy with me, Celeste,” Grandma Eleanor hissed, “I am not the one with the dubious initials scrawled across my arse.”Grandma Rose has always been the cement holding the Harding family together. Now she is gone, her daughter-in-law, Eleanor, is left to contend with three teenage children and barely an ounce of motherly love to share between them. Her twin sons, Adam and Adrian, are not intent on causing their mother grief, but her teenage daughter - the apple of Grandma Rose’s eye, spoiled and precocious, Celeste, is proving to be her worst nightmare. Ironically, both mother and daughter are two peas in a pod, struggling to tolerate each other, while deep down each longing to be loved by the other.Piece by Piece is an emotional and often humorous story, spanning over three generations of the Harding family. The innuendoes and tongue-in-cheek banter between Eleanor and Celeste is guaranteed to strike a chord with many readers, thinking back to that time in their lives when many a mother has battled to reign in her offspring’s tongue. This mother and daughter duo have the ability to evoke many emotions within the reader. They will make you laugh and make you cry, and at times throughout the story, one could be forgiven for wanting to choke them.Thirty chapters, told through the eyes of the characters, taking the reader on an emotional roller-coaster ride of love, lust, lies and deceit. The characters, though fictional, are believable and some may not be so lovable, but definitely very colourful.

Book excerpt: Arriving in Hollywood in 1950 to launch her American film career, Jean Simmons (1929-2010) had already appeared in 18 British films and was best known for her portrayal of Ophelia in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet. She soon became a favorite female face working with some of filmmaking's greats and acted opposite many Hollywood A-listers. Two of her most popular films--Guys and Dolls (1955) and Spartacus (1960)--were international box-office hits, and in her seven decades-long career she collected numerous awards and honors including a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and two Oscar nominations as Best Actress. Despite the accomplishments and accolades, radiant beauty, and stunning versatility, Simmons is considered by many to be an underrated artist, too often handed more comfortable leading female roles than those that could've elevated her to the level of super stardom experienced by some of her peers. This, the first full-length biography of Simmons, fills a gap in film and performing arts studies, and includes extensive notes and photographs.
