Book excerpt: A conductor reveals powerful leadership lessons by explaining the inner workings of a symphony orchestra Roger Nierenberg, a veteran conductor, is the creator of The Music Paradigm, a unique program that invites people to sit INSIDE a professional symphony orchestra as the musicians and conductor solve problems together. He captures that experience in Maestro: A Surprising Story about Leading by Listening, a parable about a rising executive tough challenges. The narrator befriends an orchestra conductor and is inspired to think about leadership and communication in an entirely new way. For instance: • A maestro doesn't micromanage, but encourages others to develop their own solutions. There's a big difference between conducting and trying to play all the instruments. • A maestro helps people feel ownership of the whole piece, not just their individual parts. • A maestro leads by listening. When people sense genuine open-mindedness, they offer more of their talent. If not, they get defensive and hold back their best ideas. • Truly great leaders, whether conductors striving for perfect harmony or CEOs reaching for excellence, act with a vision of their organization at its best. Book excerpt: In this classic biography of composer Giuseppe Verdi, Frank Walker reveals Verdi the man through his connections with the individuals who knew him best. “Walker focuses on some of the more significant people in Verdi’s life and carefully scrutinizes his relationships with them. His wife, Giuseppina Strepponi; his student and amanuensis, Emanuele Muzio; the conductor who first fully understood Verdi’s mature art, Angelo Mariani; the great prima donna, Teresa Stolz; the incomparable librettist and friend of his old age, Arrigo Boito—each passes before our eyes in Walker’s meticulous reconstruction. As we learn more about them, we learn more about Verdi. We see him through the eyes of his closest friends, we watch his daily activities, his daily thoughts, his habits, his warmth, his domestic tyranny. The myth dissolves and a human being stands before us.”—Philip Gossett, from the introduction

He was there so often that even the animals recognized him. The animals' sounds, from the coos and the snorts, and the squeaks and bellows, and the brays and the whistles, were music to his ears. His mother called it a symphony. Stu loved to pretend to be a conductor when he listened to the animals. But now there is trouble brewing at the zoo. A man wants to take it over and turn it into something else, getting rid of the animals. When the animals learn of his plan, they want to take action. But no one has any ideas. No one but Stu. Young readers will enjoy seeing how Stu steps in to rally the animals to save their beloved zoo.

Book excerpt: The life of Jimmy Winkfield is an exuberant epic: the seventeenth child of Kentucky sharecroppers, he was the last black jockey to win the Kentucky Derby, and survived the Ku Klux Klan, the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, and the Nazis, and died a wealthy landowner in a French chateau. Jimmy Winkfield is surely the oddest and most invisible witness to some of the greatest historical events of the 20th century. His life is one of adventure and history, of travels around the world. Winkfield, a black jockey, won the Kentucky Derby in 1901 and 1902. He was the last African American to win that race, and actually closed out an era in which black jockeys dominated the event. (The legacy had its roots in slavery, when plantation owners left the care, training and racing of horses to their slaves. In the first Kentucky Derby, in 1875, 13 of the 15 riders were African Americans. So was the winning jockey. And, over the first 28 years the Derby was run, 15 of the winning riders were African American. ) Jimmy Winkfield went from being the youngest of 17 in a family of sharecroppers, to racing for $8 a month, and eventually $1000 per race. But in 1903 Winkfield lost his third attempt, and his racing life faltered. He found himself under tremendous economic pressure–and racial pressure at the same time, from the KKK. Anxious about racial riots and protests, Winkfield accepted an offer to race in Russia, where he found refuge from the KKK and became a star again. A few years later, he became the Tsar's rider, until the Bolsheviks chased him out along with 200 of the Tsar's horses. In order to save them, Winkfield drove the horses through a nasty Eastern European winter, eating some of them along the way to stave off starvation. He arrived in France with these beloved horses, became a gentleman, married, rode and made a lot of money. Then came the Nazis, who drove him and his family back to Aitken, S.C., where he resumed a humble life as a $15 a day horse groomer. After the War he returned to France and resumed his position, farm and estate. He came for a visit to Louisville in 1961 as a guest of Sports Illustrated and, ironically, was not allowed in the door of the Brown Hotel.
