Book excerpt: We review the concept of Bessel weighted asymmetries for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and focus on the cross section in Fourier space, conjugate to the outgoing hadron's transverse momentum, where convolutions of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions become simple products. Individual asymmetric terms in the cross section can be projected out by means of a generalized set of weights involving Bessel functions. The procedure is applied to studies of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a new dedicated Monte Carlo generator which includes quark intrinsic transverse momentum within the generalized parton model. We observe a few percent systematic offset of the Bessel-weighted asymmetry obtained from Monte Carlo extraction compared to input model calculations, which is due to the limitations imposed by the energy and momentum conservation at the given energy and hard scale Q2. We find that the Bessel weighting technique provides a powerful and reliable tool to study the Fourier transform of TMDs with controlled systematics due to experimental acceptances and resolutions with different TMD model inputs.

We consider the cross section in Fourier space, conjugate to the outgoing hadron's transverse momentum, where convolutions of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions become simple products. Individual asymmetric terms in the cross section can be projected out by means of a generalized set of weights involving Bessel functions. Advantages of employing these Bessel weights are that they suppress (divergent) contributions from high transverse momentum and that soft factors cancel in (Bessel- ) weighted asymmetries. Also, the resulting compact expressions immediately connect to previous work on evolution equations for transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions and to quantities accessible in lattice QCD. Bessel weighted asymmetries are thus model independent observables that augment the description and our understanding of correlations of spin and momentum in nucleon structure.

Book excerpt: We present studies of double longitudinal spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a new dedicated Monte Carlo generator, which includes quark intrinsic transverse momentum within the generalized parton model based on the fully differential cross section for the process. Additionally, we apply Bessel-weighting to the simulated events to extract transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and also discuss possible uncertainties due to kinematic correlation effects.

Book excerpt: In this paper we present a new technique for analysis of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, based on the Bessel weighting formalism. The procedure is applied to studies of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a new dedicated Monte Carlo generator which includes quark intrinsic transverse momentum within the generalized parton model. Using a fully differential cross section for the process, the effect of four momentum conservation is analyzed using various input models for transverse momentum distributions and fragmentation functions. We observe a few percent systematic offset of the Bessel-weighted asymmetry obtained from Monte Carlo extraction compared to input model calculations, which is due to the limitations imposed by the energy and momentum conservation at the given energy/Q2. We find that the Bessel weighting technique provides a powerful and reliable tool to study the Fourier transform of TMDs with controlled systematics due to experimental acceptances and resolutions with different TMD model inputs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives insight into the theoretical backgrounds of optical vortices and their propagation in free space and simple optical systems. The author’s theoretical analysis allows full comprehension of recent results and allows a bridge between the mentioned topics. For example, there is a solution for an accelerating beam propagating along an almost half-circle, obtained from a solution for an asymmetric vortex Bessel mode. And vice versa, there is a solution for an optical vortex with accelerating focusing, obtained from a solution for a two-dimensional accelerating Pearcey beam. The book is intended for graduate and postgraduate students studying optics or wave physics.

Book excerpt: This unique and long-awaited handbook on this important topic in the hot field of stereoselective organic synthesis covers several types of nucleophiles. Top international authors deal with modern forms of achieving stereoselective conjugate additions based on the use of chiral auxiliaries or asymmetric catalysis, such as P-N ligands, organocatalysis, domino reactions, Lewis acid and base catalysis. There is also a discussion of the employment of enantioselective conjugate addition transformations in total synthesis of important molecules. With its reliable and previously unpublished experimental procedures, this is a true source of high quality information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject "optical signal processing" can and should include all aspects of optics and signal processing. However, that is too large a scope for a textbook that, like this one, is intended as an introduc tion to the subject at a level suitable for first year graduate students of electrical engineering, physics, and optical engineering. There fore, the subject matter has been restricted. The book begins with basic background material on optics, signal processing, matrix alge bra, ultrasound and SAWs, and CCDs. One might argue about this choice of topics. For example, there already exist very good books on matrix algebra. However, matrix algebra is so important in sig nal processing, especially in connection with devices such as optical matrix processors, that it was felt that a review was essential. Also, the matrix algebra needed for systolic arrays and parallel computing has made great advances in recent years. My original intention was to write a single-volume textbook cov ering most of the fundamental concepts and applications of optical signal processing. However, it soon became apparent that the large amount of material to be included would make publication in a single volume impracticable. Therefore this volume treats the "fundamen tals" and a second volume will appear dealing with devices and applications. This textbook was stimulated by a set of short courses that I have directed and lectured since 1976, as well as regular courses that I have taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1974.

Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: Successful thermal modeling of the human eye helps in the early diagnosis of eye abnormalities such as inflammation, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma-all leading causes of blindness. This book presents a unified work of eye imaging and modeling techniques that have been proposed and applied to ophthalmologic problems. It delves into various morphological, texture, higher order spectra, and wavelet transformation techniques used to extract important diagnostic features from images, which can then be analyzed by a data scientist for automated diagnosis.
