During his travels abroad Johan Scott built up a wide network of international scholars who over time became a valued circle of friends, many of whom spent enriching moments in his company and who contributed to this Festschrift. Contributors were requested to write in their home language, and furthermore to submit their contributions for publication in other journals worldwide, specifically accrediting this Festschrift in order to expand access worldwide to the wonderful contributions written in honour of our colleague. Great scholars like Johan never retire. They might go fishing more than they could in the past, but his calling of being a true teacher will never fade. Scholars like Johan understand that the present and the future are inevitably linked to the past, and although education depends on talent and performance, it should always serve to build character and a vision for future generations. Book Synopsis Essays on the Real Church by : Dirk J. Smit
Download or read book Essays on the Real Church written by Dirk J. Smit and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spirit of the Reformation is often expressed in the well-known slogan that Reformed churches are always being reformed according to God’s Word, ecclesia reformata semper reformanda secundum verbum Dei. Over the last century, the spirit of this slogan motivated someone like Dietrich Bonhoeffer to argue that the visible form and life of the church should reflect the truth and message of the church. Already in his doctoral dissertation called Sanctorum Communio, the communion of the saints, the young Bonhoeffer combined theological claims and traditions with social theory and analysis, in this spirit, in an innovative way, to study the nature and integrity and witness of the church. At the time, this was a radical claim, with major consequences and challenges for Protestant churches. Their life – which meant their order, structure, actions, statements, convictions, public presence and role – was to be measured by their gospel – which meant their message, proclamation, convictions, claims. They could no longer proclaim one truth yet live a different life. It was this spirit which led to the well-known Theological Declaration of Barmen in 1934 and to the formation of the Confessing Church in Nazi Germany. Many called this a moment of truth, a status confessionis. It was this same spirit which later inspired the struggle in South Africa for the integrity and faithfulness of the church and for the credibility of its message, proclamation and witness. The contributions in this volume – 52 papers, essays, sermons, studies – were all produced in this spirit. Most of them have not been published before. They were all occasional pieces, written over several decades, in different contexts and for different purposes and audiences, yet they all breathe this self-critical spirit of the Reformation, considering whether the real church – the concrete, every day, actual, living church that people know and experience and perhaps belong to – truly strives to embody the gospel itself, the message which it claims and proclaims. They all inquire, under different circumstances and in diverse ways, about different social forms of the real church – from worship to congregation, from denomination to ecumenical church, from individual believers to movements and organisations – whether and how they embody the truth of the church, or not. Together, these contributions tell a story – the story of this spirit, in South African circles, over several decades, but also in the ecumenical church in our globalizing world. They offer one small glimpse into different concrete moments in the story of this spirit in the life of this tradition and community of faith. Hopefully, some of these accounts may resonate with others who also shared the same spirit – and still share it today, in new and ongoing ways.

Book Synopsis Koelies, planters en koloniale politiek by : J. Breman
Download or read book Koelies, planters en koloniale politiek written by J. Breman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Twelve members' court battle with the Dutch Reformed Church by : Laurie Gaum
Download or read book Twelve members' court battle with the Dutch Reformed Church written by Laurie Gaum and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of 2017, the “backlash cycle” was in full swing in church denominations in South Africa as far as embracing sexual diversity was concerned. In 2015 a momentous decision by the General Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) embracing inclusivity in allowing LGBTIQA+ ministers to not be celibate and its ministers to officiate same-sex marriages, surprised friend and foe. But this was reversed a year later in an Extraordinary General Synod of the church. The disappointing outcome of the De Lange v Methodist Church of Southern Africa case had just been handed down by the Constitutional Court, and the Anglican Church’s stalling on fully affirming sexual diversity, continued.

Book Synopsis The Yukon Trail: A Tale of the North by : William MacLeod Raine
Download or read book The Yukon Trail: A Tale of the North written by William MacLeod Raine and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The midnight sun had set, but in a crotch between two snow-peaks it had kindled a vast caldron from which rose a mist of jewels, garnet and turquoise, topaz and amethyst and opal, all swimming in a sea of molten gold. The glow of it still clung to the face of the broad Yukon, as a flush does to the soft, wrinkled cheek of a girl just roused from deep sleep. Except for a faint murkiness in the air it was still day. There was light enough for the four men playing pinochle on the upper deck, though the women of their party, gossiping in chairs grouped near at hand, had at last put aside their embroidery. The girl who sat by herself at a little distance held a magazine still open on her lap. If she were not reading, her attitude suggested it was less because of the dusk than that she had surrendered herself to the spell of the mysterious beauty which for this hour at least had transfigured the North to a land all light and atmosphere and color. Gordon Elliot had taken the boat at Pierre's Portage, fifty miles farther down the river. He had come direct from the creeks, and his impressions of the motley pioneer life at the gold-diggings were so vivid that he had found an isolated corner of the deck where he could scribble them in a notebook while still fresh. But he had not been too busy to see that the girl in the wicker chair was as much of an outsider as he was. Plainly this was her first trip in. Gordon was a stranger in the Yukon country, one not likely to be over-welcome when it became known what his mission was. It may have been because he was out of the picture himself that he resented a little the exclusion of the young woman with the magazine. Certainly she herself gave no evidence of feeling about it. Her long-lashed eyes looked dreamily across the river to the glowing hills beyond. Not once did they turn with any show of interest to the lively party under the awning. From where he was leaning against the deckhouse Elliot could see only a fine, chiseled profile shading into a mass of crisp, black hair, but some quality in the detachment of her personality stimulated gently his imagination. He wondered who she could be. His work had taken him to frontier camps before, but he could not place her as a type. The best he could do was to guess that she might be the daughter of some territorial official on her way in to join him. A short, thick-set man who had ridden down on the stage with Elliot to Pierre's Portage drifted along the deck toward him. He wore the careless garb of a mining man in a country which looks first to comfort.

Book Synopsis The Latin Dialect of the Ager Faliscus by : Gabriël C. L. M. Bakkum
Download or read book The Latin Dialect of the Ager Faliscus written by Gabriël C. L. M. Bakkum and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. Although the Ager Faliscus lay between the areas where Etruscan, Latin and Sabellic languages were spoken, the inscriptions from the area from before c.150 bce show that it used a speech of its own, known as Faliscan. Most scholars agree that Faliscan is linguistically very close to Latin, but the hypothesis that it is in fact a Latin dialect has not been the subject of a major publication until now. In this work, the linguistic data on Faliscan provided by the inscriptions are analyzed and compared to the languages of the surrounding areas. Sociolinguistic aspects such as language contact and local identity are discussed as well. The main conclusion is that Faliscan can indeed be regarded as a dialect of Latin. The work includes a re-edition of all inscriptions, in many cases based on autopsy. This title can be previewed in Google Books - http://books.google.com/books?vid=ISBN9789056295622.

Book Synopsis Fields, Farms and Colonists by : Tymon C. A. de Haas
Download or read book Fields, Farms and Colonists written by Tymon C. A. de Haas and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2011 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the author addresses two important issues in Roman archaeology. On the basis of a comparison of intensive field surveys in different parts of the Pontine region, central Italy, it is argued that detailed site and off-site collection strategies have much to offer in understanding site chronology and land use patterns. Setting the field survey data in a wider geographical and historical context, the author also explores the context and impact of the foundation of Roman colonies and rural tribes on rural settlement systems, as such contributing to current debates on the nature of early Roman colonization.
