Si tratta di una categoria diagnostica, relativa ai disturbi del neurosviluppo che riguardano i disturbi delle abilità scolastiche, ossia: Dislessia, cioè disturbo nella lettura (intesa come abilità di decodifica del testo); Disortografia, cioè disturbo nella scrittura (intesa come abilità di codifica fonografica e competenza ortografica); Disgrafia, cioè disturbo nella grafia (intesa come abilità grafo-motoria); Discalculia, cioè disturbo nelle abilità di numero e di calcolo (intese come capacità di comprendere e operare con i numeri). Nell'approccio dei disturbi in esame si è passati gradatamente dal concetto di inserimento a quello di integrazione e poi a quello di inclusione. Si propongono: strumenti compensativi e dispensativi, sport e terapia cognitivo-comportamentale.

In ogni classe ci sono alunni che presentano una richiesta di speciale attenzione per una varietà di ragioni: svantaggio sociale e culturale, disturbi specifici di apprendimento e/o disturbi evolutivi specifici, difficoltà derivanti dalla non conoscenza della cultura e della lingua italiana perché appartenenti a culture diverse. Nel variegato panorama delle nostre scuole la complessità delle classi diviene sempre più evidente. Quest'area dello svantaggio scolastico, che ricomprende problematiche diverse, viene indicata come area dei Bisogni Educativi Speciali. I Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento invece interessano alcune specifiche abilità dell'apprendimento scolastico, in un contesto di funzionamento intellettivo adeguato all'età anagrafica. Sono coinvolte in tali disturbi: l'abilità di lettura, di scrittura, di fare calcoli. Sulla base dell'abilità interessata dal disturbo, i DSA assumono una denominazione specifica: dislessia (lettura), disgrafia e disortografia (scrittura), discalculia (calcolo). La Legge 8 ottobre 2010, no 170 riconosce la dislessia, la disgrafia, la disortografia e la discalculia quali disturbi specifici di apprendimento, denominati "DSA". Posto nelle condizioni di attenuare e/o compensare il disturbo, infatti, il discente può raggiungere gli obiettivi di apprendimento previsti.
