Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let me say to President Botha: apartheid is doomed! It has been condemned in the councils of God, rejected by every nation on the planet and is no longer believed in by the people who gave it birth. Apartheid is the god that has failed . . . let not one more sacred life be offered on its blood-stained altar." This is what Bishop Peter Storey preached in 1986 in the darkest hours of black suffering in a South Africa torn apart by racial oppression. Join him as a youthful chaplain to Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, defying armed police entering his pulpit, heading the SA Council of Churches with Bishop Desmond Tutu, leading 25,000 marchers against Johannesburg's secret police headquarters, and confronting Winnie Mandela's wrongs. Storey's ministry was shaped by one simple question: "What does it mean to obey Jesus in apartheid South Africa?" This book tells of his answer and challenges the silence of American churches in the face of nationalism, systemic racism, and right-wing populism in the USA.

Book excerpt: **Purchase includes a free online course on faith*** What do you do when the faith you’ve always known no longer makes sense? That’s the haunting, confusing, unexpected question confronting twentysomething Peter Daniel Young after a friend doubts whether Christianity makes sense of life and has anything to offer. More troublesome yet: the right Christian answers Peter was trained to give since childhood are for questions no one is even asking—including his friend, and even himself. Which leaves him questioning what he’s always believed — leading to a crisis of faith the likes of which he has never before experienced. While not abandoning his childhood faith, Peter launches into a journey of exploration and discovery, reimagining faith for his world and questioning what the essence of the Christian message is in the first place. Along the way, he is confronted by rising doubts, encouraged by friends new and old, questioned by those close to him, and challenged to own his faith for himself. What he discovers is all at once terrifying and thrilling — for this story is the drama of his faith’s death and rebirth. Written in the self-discovery style of John Green’s coming of age stories, with shades of such classics as C. S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity and John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, J. A. Bouma’s tale is the first story in a fresh, insightful spiritual coming of age series for a new generation wondering if the Christianity they’ve always known still matters in these dynamic times — and whether there might be something more to help make sense of life. Drawing from his own spiritual journey as a young adult, Bouma writes a stirring fable of resonance and truth for those wrestling with deep questions of faith, life, and everything in between. Whether you are facing your own crisis of faith and wondering whether Christianity still matters, or you know someone who is struggling themselves, discover along with Peter what the Christian message means for him, his family and friends, his life in the Church — and for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I never intended for this book to see the light of day. As a matter of fact I published a book last year thinking that I would never publish another. When I suffered my stroke in 1991 I kept a diary of my thoughts and feelings. After about six years I sat down and wrote about my stroke. Recently, I was walking at the park as my cardiac rehabilitation therapist had recommended after my heart attack and bypass in 2009. I was talking to a therapist who works at one of the hospitals and also teaches a class at the local college. She asked me if I would speak to her class about my thoughts and feelings when I had my stroke. I agreed heartily, but also remembered I had written this manuscript. As I read this manuscript those feelings came back. I said to myself that all therapist and those in training should understand those feelings I was having. So here it is... I would like to share with you, the reader, my story. It's a story of tragedy and pain, recovery and hope, of a world shattered and broken, and the road to health and wholeness. It is my story. I'm going to try to share the feelings of lying in a hospital, not being able to move, needing help to go to the bathroom. Hating to call the nurse and having to admit my helplessness. Me, a minister, one who always prided himself on being in control of every situation. Here I lay; my whole world had fallen around me. Would my wife stay with me or would she just go away? Could our marriage of thirteen years take the stress? And what of Philip, our nine year old son, could he take the ribbing from the other children about his brain dead dad? Would Philip be embarrassed to be with his father who walked with a limp? What would all those people say since I had made my living keeping people at arms length all these years? How would I face them, or better yet, could I face them? These questions and many others would pop up in the next few weeks, months and years. I learned real quick what depression was and how it would grip me almost any time of the day. This is my story. I am proud of myself because now I can share it with you. It is said the first sign of recovery is when you can talk about it. I have faced a lot of monsters in the past ten years. There is a story of a young man named Shea. He lived in a small town called Shady Vale. One day a wizard named Allanon came to see him. Allanon told Shea that he was chosen to defeat the dark lord who was destroying the world. Shea was to find the Sword of Shinara and go to mount doom and defeat the dark lord. Well, on the way he meets the elves and dwarfs. He was attacked by the dark lord's underlings. One day he finally reached Mount Doom with the sword of Shinara. There he came face to face with the evil dark lord. Shea to his amazement faced the evil one. The sword reflected his doubts, fears and hopelessness (The Sword of Shinara). You see, the monster that Shea faced was himself. This story consoled me at times. When I was asked to do something I would have "no" on my lips. Then I would ask myself, "what monster are you fighting? Will you give up and give in?" My grandmother told me I was a hard headed person. I'll buy that.

Book excerpt: J. Kent Edwards recalls a story that late pastor J. Vernon McGee told about seeing children in South Africa playing a game of marbles in the dust with real diamonds. The precious stones were being handled with no regard for their true worth. Edwards fears the same thing happens today when preachers offer Scriptural truth to listeners without being completely overwhelmed by its greatness themselves in the process. Deep Preaching is his call to "rethink" preaching. Edwards helps preachers learn to preach the word in ways that will powerfully change the lives of hearers. He contends that sermons "need not settle comfortably on the lives of the listeners like dust on a coffee table." He encourages preachers to join him in casting off the lines that moor their ministries to the status-quo and make every effort to steer their preaching out of the "comfortable shallows." He urges them to preach deep sermons rather than superficial ones, moving "beyond the yawn-inspiring to the awe-inspiring, from the trite to the transforming."

Book excerpt: The recently married Bernie Mylin and his wife, Gwen, have relocated to the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, area and finds turmoil is once again building. Norma Harris, who has caused so much trouble in the past for the Mylin's, has reached out to Harrisburg from her prison cell in Germany. Arson, murders, and a kidnapping keeps Bernie on his toes, seeking answers. Bernie and Gwen call upon two of their friends from Cicero, Illinois, to contribute their help in catching a criminal. Meanwhile, Bernie must still manage an international standards department and hire engineers for two new major product families. At times the swirl of events almost becomes too much to bear. During the course of the story, Bernie Mylin, a Christian, must respond to questions and situations imposed by unbelieving co-workers. Questions of faith are considered as well as Bernie's attempt to witness to a member of a cult. David F. Rundle has had four books published previously. Two are nonfiction Bible study aids (Your Mirror Reflects Jacob and Grace and the Rebel Sigh) and two Christian murder mysteries titled A Spring Cicero Murder and The Bloodied Lambskin. David Rundle worked for thirty-five years in the electronic components industry as Product Engineering Manager and retired in 1998 as Global Product Standards Director. David Rundle's vision and desire is to write and publish fictional novels (mysteries) that include travel to international locations he has visited during his standardization efforts. These novels would also include aspects of electronic component engineering activities while presenting a Christian worldview dealing with everyday challenges faced by company employees. His hope is that the reader would be entertained while observing practical Christian living. David Rundle is a Christian and has served as Deacon, Elder, and teacher in the various churches he has attended.
