Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beranger's Songs of the Empire, the Peace, and the Restoration I have long wished to attempt this task. Its magni tude has deterred me. Not that I have ever doubted that patient diligence, and the warmest sympathy with my subj eot (though backed by executive powers of never such mediocrity), would ultimately secure to me much of the success aspired to. But I have wanted the time and means. In the present age of railway literature, the labour of carefully digesting, and reproducing in ano ther language, the life's work of a very old man (never at any time an idler) could not possibly meet with ade quate pecuniary compensation; and labours of love, on an extended scale, are luxuries that the working au thor must be chary of indulging in. He might as well dream of yachts and hunters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English: by : Peter France
Download or read book The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English: written by Peter France and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the one hundred and ten years covered by volume four of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English, what characterized translation was above all the move to encompass what Goethe called 'world literature'. This occurred, paradoxically, at a time when English literature is often seen as increasingly self-sufficient. In Europe, the culture of Germany was a new source of inspiration, as were the medieval literatures and the popular ballads of many lands, from Spain to Serbia. From the mid-century, the other literatures of the North, both ancient and modern, were extensively translated, and the last third of the century saw the beginning of the Russian vogue. Meanwhile, as the British presence in the East was consolidated, translation helped readers to take possession of 'exotic' non-European cultures, from Persian and Arabic to Sanskrit and Chinese. The thirty-five contributors bring an enormous range of expertise to the exploration of these new developments and of the fascinating debates which reopened old questions about the translator's task, as the new literalism, whether scholarly or experimental, vied with established modes of translation. The complex story unfolds in Britain and its empire, but also in the United States, involving not just translators, publishers, and readers, but also institutions such as the universities and the periodical press. Nineteenth-century English literature emerges as more open to the foreign than has been recognized before, with far-reaching effects on its orientation.

Book Synopsis Greek and Roman Classics in the British Struggle for Social Reform by : Henry Stead
Download or read book Greek and Roman Classics in the British Struggle for Social Reform written by Henry Stead and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek and Roman Classics in the British Struggle for Social Reform presents an original and carefully argued case for the importance of classical ideas, education and self-education in the personal development and activities of British social reformers in the 19th and first six decades of the 20th century. Usually drawn from the lower echelons of the middle class and the most aspirational artisanal and working-class circles, the prominent reformers, revolutionaries, feminists and educationalists of this era, far from regarding education in Latin and Greek as the preserve of the upper classes and inherently reactionary, were consistently inspired by the Mediterranean Classics and contested the monopoly on access to them often claimed by the wealthy and aristocratic elite. The essays, several of which draw on previously neglected and unpublished sources, cover literary figures (Coleridge, the 'Cockney Classicist' poets including Keats, and Dickens), different cultural media (burlesque theatre, body-building, banner art, poetry, journalism and fiction), topics in social reform (the desirability of revolution, suffrage, poverty, social exclusion, women's rights, healthcare, eugenics, town planning, race relations and workers' education), as well as political affiliations and agencies (Chartists, Trade Unions, the WEA, political parties including the Fabians, the Communist Party of Great Britain and the Labour Party). The sixteen essays in this volume restore to the history of British Classics some of the subject's ideological complexity and instrumentality in social progress, a past which is badly needed in the current debates over the future of the discipline. Contributors include specialists in English Literature, History, Classics and Art.
