Book Synopsis Macromolecular Crystallography with Synchrotron Radiation by : John R. Helliwell
Download or read book Macromolecular Crystallography with Synchrotron Radiation written by John R. Helliwell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly illustrated monograph provides a comprehensive treatment of the study of the structure and function of the molecules of life--proteins, nucleic acids, and viruses--using synchrotron radiation and crystallography. Beginning with chapters on the fundamentals of macromolecular crystallography and macromolecular structure, the book goes on to review the sources and properties of synchrotron radiation, instrumentation, and monochromatic data collection. There are also chapters on the Laue method, on diffuse X-ray scattering, and on variable wavelength anomalous dispersion methods. The book concludes with a description and survey of applications including studies at high resolution, the use of small crystals, the study of large unit cells, and time-resolved crystallography (particularly of enzymes). Appendices are provided that present essential information for the synchrotron user as well as information about synchrotron facilities currently available.
Book Synopsis General Relativity: The Essentials by : Carlo Rovelli
Download or read book General Relativity: The Essentials written by Carlo Rovelli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short book, renowned theoretical physicist and author Carlo Rovelli gives a straightforward introduction to Einstein's General Relativity, our current theory of gravitation. Focusing on conceptual clarity, he derives all the basic results in the simplest way, taking care to explain the physical, philosophical and mathematical ideas at the heart of “the most beautiful of all scientific theories”. Some of the main applications of General Relativity are also explored, for example, black holes, gravitational waves and cosmology, and the book concludes with a brief introduction to quantum gravity. Written by an author well known for the clarity of his presentation of scientific ideas, this concise book will appeal to university students looking to improve their understanding of the principal concepts, as well as science-literate readers who are curious about the real theory of General Relativity, at a level beyond a popular science treatment.

Book Synopsis An Engraved Landscape: Rock carvings in the Wadi al-Ajal, Libya by : Tertia Barnett
Download or read book An Engraved Landscape: Rock carvings in the Wadi al-Ajal, Libya written by Tertia Barnett and published by British Institute for Libyan and Northern African Studies. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 933 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Engraved Landscape is a contextual analysis of a substantial new corpus of engravings from the Wadi al-Ajal, situated in the Central Saharan region of south west Libya. The wadi is renowned as the heartland of the Garamantian civilization, which emerged from local mobile Pastoral communities in the 1st millennium BC, and dominated trans-Saharan trade and politics for over a thousand years. Extensive archaeological and palaeoenvironmental investigations in recent years have provided detailed insight into the later prehistory and protohistory of the wadi and surrounding areas. However, prior to the fieldwork detailed in this work, only a handful of carvings had been recorded in the wadi. This work is based on systematic survey, conducted between 2004 and 2009, which recorded around 2,500 previously unknown or unpublished engraved and inscribed rock surfaces. All forms of engraving, whether figurative or surface markings, were viewed as significant residues of human interaction with the rock surface and were recorded. The resulting database provides an opportunity to analyze the engravings in relation to their changing physical and cultural contexts, and the discussion offers a fresh interpretation of Saharan rock art based on this substantial new evidence. An Engraved Landscape also captures in detail a unique heritage resource that is currently inaccessible and threatened. This record of the fragile engravings provides an important source of information for researchers and students.

Book Synopsis Projecting the Holocaust into the Present by : Lawrence Baron
Download or read book Projecting the Holocaust into the Present written by Lawrence Baron and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Holocaust scholars and survivors contend that the event was so catastrophic and unprecedented that it defies authentic representation in feature films. Yet it is precisely the extremity of 'the Final Solution' and the issues it raised that have fueled the cinematic imagination since the end of World War II. Recognizing that movies reach a greater audience than eyewitness, historical, or literary accounts, Lawrence Baron argues that they mirror changing public perceptions of the Holocaust over time and place. After tracing the evolution of the most commonly employed genres and themes in earlier Holocaust motion pictures, he focuses on how films from the l990s made the Holocaust relevant for contemporary audiences. While genres like biographical films and love stories about doomed Jewish-Gentile couples remained popular, they now cast Jews or non-Jewish victims like homosexuals in lead roles more often than was the case in the past. Baron attributes the recent proliferation of Holocaust comedies and children's movies to the search for more figurative and age-appropriate genres for conveying the significance of the Holocaust to generations born after it happened. He contends that thematic shifts to stories about neo-Nazis, rescuers, survivors, and their children constitute an expression of the continuing impact the Holocaust exerts on the present. The book concludes with a survey of recent films like Nowhere in Africa and The Pianist.
