Her first assignment with a secret Domestic Terrorism Crime Unit finds that intuition putting her DTCU partner and her lover in danger… It has been three months since Benita Renee Jenkins completed her first assignment for a secret organization called DTCU, the Domestic Terrorism Crime Unit. When Agent Jenkins meets young boxer Doug Gibson at a local gym in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, her sixth sense kicks in. Benita soon discovers that Doug’s grandmother has been kidnapped by a local gang, and if he ever wants to see her alive again, he must participate in an illegal underground fighting club to pay off a gambling debt owed by his brother Sean. When Agent Miguel Perkins, her boss and lover, warns her to stay clear of any situations not sanctioned by the DTCU, she goes against his command and stops at nothing to solve this case. She will get to the truth, even if it means putting herself and fellow agent Evan Green in the direct line of danger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Akif Kichloo, author of The Feeling May Remain, comes this deeply personal and poetic account of a troubled life. A nowhere man, with or without god, a quintessential mental nomad, omnipresent in his mistakes, exploring mental illness, identity, family, sexuality, god, love, childhood, and purpose of life, Poems That Lose brings forth questions all of us wrestle with but either avoid asking ourselves or miserably fail answering almost every time. Kichloo navigates brilliantly from the deeply personal to the universal to the extinct, paving the way for a rare new voice in contemporary poetry, a poet who is more than wanted; he is desperately needed. These poems will slip off your tongue, creep under your skin, and live there.

Book excerpt: In this bestselling book that inspired the hit movie by the same name, starring Frank Sinatra, an apparent suicide forces a PI to reconsider his most famous case Joe Leland returned from World War II with a chest full of medals, but his greatest honor came after he traded his pilot’s wings for a detective’s shield. Catching the Leikman killer made Joe a local hero, but the shine quickly wore off, and it wasn’t long before he left the police force to start his own private agency. Years after his greatest triumph, Joe has a modest income and a quiet life—both of which may soon fall apart. When Colin MacIver dies at the local racetrack, the coroner rules that he took his own life, but his widow knows better. Because MacIver’s life insurance policy doesn’t cover suicide, his wife is left broke, desperate, and afraid for her safety. She hires Leland to find out who could have killed her gentle, unassuming husband—a simple question that will turn this humble city inside out.

Kichloo speaks to predecessors as diverse as Seamus Heaney and (fellow doctor-poet) Rafael Campo in a series of lovely, compelling poems.” —Chaya Bhuvaneswar, author of White Dancing Elephants Falling Through Love submerges readers into Akif Kichloo’s deeply personal yet widely resonant experiences, exploring relationships in their most exposed and honest states. Written in a variety of poetic forms—free verse, rhyme, prose, and visual poetry—Falling Through Love takes the reader on a poignant journey with the writer, about charting one’s own path in life, investigating failure, family dynamics, and love. Looking at life backward and forward simultaneously, this collection brings forth new perspectives on what it means to be alive, to have made mistakes, to have fought for an identity, to have loved and lost and then loved and lost again. “Falling Through Love is a brilliant and unapologetic exploration of faith, loss, mental illness, and the many facets of love. Kichloo’s compelling storytelling will remind you of the push and pull of love.” —K.Y. Robinson, author of Submerge “Reading Falling Through Love felt like what I imagine Alice felt like falling into Wonderland—it’s beautiful (almost overwhelmingly so), evokes a remarkable variety and amount of emotions, and ultimately causes you to look inward towards yourself . . . The poems and artwork throughout Falling Through Love create an emotional journey that you can’t help but relate to.” —Juliette Sebock, Nightingale & Sparrow Literary Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, 1,200 community colleges enroll over ten million students each year—nearly half of the nation’s undergraduates. Yet fewer than 40 percent of entrants complete an undergraduate degree within six years. This fact has put pressure on community colleges to improve academic outcomes for their students. Redesigning America’s Community Colleges is a concise, evidence-based guide for educational leaders whose institutions typically receive short shrift in academic and policy discussions. It makes a compelling case that two-year colleges can substantially increase their rates of student success, if they are willing to rethink the ways in which they organize programs of study, support services, and instruction. Community colleges were originally designed to expand college enrollments at low cost, not to maximize completion of high-quality programs of study. The result was a cafeteria-style model in which students pick courses from a bewildering array of choices, with little guidance. The authors urge administrators and faculty to reject this traditional model in favor of “guided pathways”—clearer, more educationally coherent programs of study that simplify students’ choices without limiting their options and that enable them to complete credentials and advance to further education and the labor market more quickly and at less cost. Distilling a wealth of data amassed from the Community College Research Center (Teachers College, Columbia University), Redesigning America’s Community Colleges offers a fundamental redesign of the way two-year colleges operate, stressing the integration of services and instruction into more clearly structured programs of study that support every student’s goals.

Scrappy and rough around the edges, it's no wonder that when the ship's captain turns up dead, it's Reid who takes the rap. Falsely accused and under the gun, Reid jumps ship and vanishes into Shanghai--only to get caught in a web of intrigue, betrayal, and murder. In a world where nothing is what it seems and everything is for sale, he's soon out of his depth, drawn into a spy game in which the winner takes all ... and the loser takes a knife to the back. Will Reid live up to his reputation as the Spy Killer? He'll have to learn the rules fast, because with players like sexy Russian agent Varinka Savischna in the hunt, the game is about to turn as seductive as it is sinister. Give in to temptation and experience the intrigue, as the Spy Killer invites you to take part in a most provocative conspiracy. "A roller coaster ride of intrigue, suspense, action and adventure ... very highly recommended." --Midwest Book Review

Book excerpt: One can obtain as many opinions about television as there are people with eyes. No two people see it in exactly the same way. You may not be aware of it, but up there, in that compartment of your brain where memories are stored, all sorts of strange images are stockpiled. The purpose of this book is to coax those memories out of their hiding places and bring them front and center, where you can savor them anew. Although this book is intended to be a comprehensive review of television during the past twenty years-the two decades that have passed since the medium became a commercial reality- it is not to be just a scholarly history. The programs and people represented here were chosen not because they were "good" or "popular" or "successful," but because each contributed, in some large or small way, to the progress of television.

Book excerpt: First she was Margaret the refugee. A Saxon princess, sister of Edgar Atheling who, but for William the Conqueror, would have been King of England. She came to Scotland in 1069. Beautiful, sympathetic and devout, she was an unlikely consort to the rough and ready Malcolm King of Scots and slayer of MacBeth, a man who cared for little other than hunting, drinking and the brutal arts of war. Yet, through her gentle strength of character and intelligence, she was to have a profound and lasting effect on her adopted nation and people that lasts to this day.
