Therefore, there is a need to redirect research on diasporas from within Africa to include non-economic diasporas during this time period. Diasporas and Ethnic Identity in Africa: The Edo ne Ekue among the Northeast Yoruba, 1485–1995 fills a gap by discussing the existence of diasporas in pre-colonial Africa that have been neglected by African scholars. Using the Edo ne Ekue as a case study, Uyilawa Usuanlele examines Edo people by shedding light on their political institutions, trading networks, and associations as autonomous and distinct within the Benin Kingdom. This book also discusses how the Edo ne Ekue simultaneously linked their institutions with the royal court of the Benin Kingdom at the expense of the local rulers of their host communities. Throughout this study, Usuanlele provides a better understanding of ethnic identity, state by state relations and their members outside their territorial boundaries to discover the dynamics of political, economic, and social changes within and between communities during and after pre-colonial times.

Sixty years after the Conference of African Writers of English Expression at Makerere University, the dominance in the global canon of African literatures written in European languages over those in indigenous languages continues to be an issue. This volume of ALT re-examines this central question of African literatures to ask, 'What is the state of African literatures in African languages today?' Contributors discuss the translation of Gurnah's novel Paradise to Swahili, and Osemwegie's Ọrọ Epic to English, and Wolof wrestlers' panegyrics. They analyse Edo eco-critical poetry, and the poetics of Igbo mask poetry, and morality in early prose fiction in indigenous Nigerian languages. Other essays contribute a semiotic analysis of Duruaku's A Matter of Identity, and the decolonization of trauma in Uwem Akpan's Say You're One of Them. Overall, the volume paints a complex image of African cultural production in indigenous languages, especially in the ways Africa's oral performance traditions remain resilient in the face of a seemingly undiminished presence of non-African language literary traditions.

The kingdom, founded around 40Bc was at its height between the 14th and 16th century when it conquered neighbouring countries on the West African Coast and traded far afield with Europeans and traders from the East. It was sacked by the British in 1897 though the crown was restored in 1914, the king's authority and influence was highly diminished. However, the people's traditions and customs continue to this day. Gradually all the stores were reshipped, and the last of the men embarked, the only casualty being the loss of a marine belonging to the Forte, who fell overboard and was drowned. Captain O'Callaghan had been ordered to remain at Gwato to hold this base until Captain Gallwey arrived there from Benin. Runners were sent first down the road to report on its state, and these reports being satisfactory, two companies of Houssas under Captain Gallwey were sent down to Gwato. The road was quite clear of the enemy, and the villagers friendly, which pieces of news were very reassuring, and pointed to a speedy settling down of the country. The distance of twenty-five miles was accomplished in two days without trouble, the path being very fairly good, and much more used than that to Ologbo. This in future will be used as the main road, being more convenient than any of the others, and communication kept up by water between Gwato, New Benin, and Sapele. Time will show the effect of our possession of Benin. On the trade of the Benin River it cannot fail to be beneficial. The removal of trade Jujus, and increased security to travellers of all sorts, must not only bring the products of the country itself to European markets, but also increase the passage of trade from the interior.
