Book Synopsis Chant and Notation in South Italy and Rome before 1300 by : John Boe
Download or read book Chant and Notation in South Italy and Rome before 1300 written by John Boe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen studies assembled here grew out of research on south-Italian ordinary chants and tropes for the multi-volume series Beneventanum Troporum Corpus II, edited by John Boe in collaboration with Alejandro Planchart. In the present essays, clerical and ordinary chants and tropes of the Mass (especially when derived from paraliturgical hymns and poems), certain aspects of chant notation and particular facets of the old Beneventan and the old Roman chant repertories are examined in relation to the three main cultic centres of the Italian south - Benevento, Montecassino and Rome - and as they relate to their European context, namely Frankish and Norman chant and the varieties of chant sung in Italy north of Rome. The volume includes one previously unpublished study, on the Roman introit Salus Populi.
Book Synopsis Embellishing the Liturgy by : Alejandro Enrique Planchart
Download or read book Embellishing the Liturgy written by Alejandro Enrique Planchart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the imposition of Gregorian chant upon most of Europe by the authority of the Carolingian kings and emperors in the eighth and ninth centuries, a large number of repertories arose in connection with the new chant and its liturgy. Of these repertories, the tropes, together with the sequences, represent the main creative activity of European musicians in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries. Because they were not an absolutely official part of the liturgy, as was Gregorian chant, they reflect local traditions, particularly in terms of melody, and more so than the new pieces that were composed at the time. In addition, the earlier layers of tropes represent, in many cases, a survival of the pre local pre Gregorian melodic traditions. This volume provides an introduction to the study of tropes in the form of an extensive anthology of major studies and a comprehensive bibliography and constitutes a classic reference resource for the study of one of the most important musico-liturgical genres of the central middle ages.
Book Synopsis Chant and its Origins by : ThomasForrest Kelly
Download or read book Chant and its Origins written by ThomasForrest Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin liturgical music of the medieval church is the earliest body of Western music to survive in a more or less complete form. It is a body of thousands of individual pieces, of striking beauty and aesthetic appeal, which has the special quality of embodying, of giving voice to, the words of the liturgy itself. Plainchant is the music that underpins essentially all other music of the middle ages (and far beyond), and is the music that is most abundantly preserved. It is a subject that has engaged a great deal of research and debate in the last fifty years and the nature of the complex issues that have recently arisen in research on chant are explored here in an overview of current issues and problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Musical Repertories of the Liturgy of Southern Italy and Beneventan Sources, Alleluia Melodies after 1100, and the change in transmission of instrumental music in Fifteenth-Century Europe are provided. John McCaughey's concert programme of medieval troped chants for Pentecost juxtaposed with traditional monophonic work songs from Vietnam, Thailand and Western Java as well as various contemporary compositions are also included. Songs of the Dove and the Nightingale provides a comprehensive survey of sacred and secular music within the context of a multilingual and intercultural milieu where influences and exchanges of liturgico-musical materials took place between many different ethnic groups. Structural relations between music and text are explored through the analysis of textual punctuation and the structured repetition of the refrain.

Book Synopsis Guillaume Du Fay by : Alejandro Enrique Planchart
Download or read book Guillaume Du Fay written by Alejandro Enrique Planchart and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 1313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the work of one of medieval music's most important figures, and in so doing presents an extended panorama of musical life in Europe at the end of the middle ages. Guillaume Du Fay rose from obscure beginnings to become the most significant composer of the fifteenth century, a man courted by kings and popes, and this study of his life and career provides a detailed examination of his entire output, including a number of newly discovered works. As well as offering musical analysis, this volume investigates his close association with the Cathedral of Cambrai, and explores how, at a time when music was becoming increasingly professionalised, Du Fay forged his own identity as 'a composer'. This detailed biography will be highly valuable for those interested in the history of medieval and church music, as well as for scholars of Du Fay's musical legacy.

Book Synopsis Western Plainchant in the First Millennium by : Sean Gallagher
Download or read book Western Plainchant in the First Millennium written by Sean Gallagher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking up questions and issues in early chant studies, this volume of essays addresses some of the topics raised in James McKinnon's The Advent Project: The Later Seventh-Century Creation of the Roman Mass, the last book before his untimely death in February 1999. A distinguished group of chant scholars examine the formation of the liturgy, issues of theory and notation, and Carolingian and post-Carolingian chant. Special studies include the origins of musical notations, nuances of early chant performance (with accompanying CD), musical style and liturgical structure in the early Divine Office, and new sources for Old-Roman chant. Western Plainchant in the First Millenium offers new information and new insights about a period of crucial importance in the growth of the liturgy and music of the Western Church.
