Book excerpt: Excerpt from Benedict's Treatise, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing a Summary of the Jurisdiction, Powers and Duties; Justices of the Peace in the State of New York, Adapted to the Code of Procedure in Civil Cases; Also, a Practical Treatise on Their Jurisdiction, Duties and Authority in Criminal Cases; Togethe IT is now twelve years since the Fourth Edition of my Treatise was issued, and I am grateful to be able to state that it has been received with favor by those who have had occasion to use it in the line of their business and profession. Since that time, however, many important changes have been made in the law governing Justices' Courts, and the various special proceedings within their jurisdiction. I have inserted in this edition much new matter, such as amendments made by the Legislature, and have cited authorities made by the various Courts, in order to give those doing business in Justices' Courts and within their jurisdiction, the benefit of the law governing these Courts, and defining their powers. When we consider that the greater portion of the litiga tion in our country is settled by and before these Courts, no one will, for a moment, hesitate in saying that the latest alterations of the statutes, and the latest decisions of the appellate Courts, should be placed before them; and more especially when we realize that among the greater number of these Justices of the Peace, but very few, comparatively, have access to the Law Libraries of our country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Barber's classic The Trial of the Templars recounts the dramatic demise of this elite military force in the fourteenth century. Having fought against Islam in the crusades in the East for nearly two centuries, in October 1307 the members of this respected Order were arrested on the order of Philip IV, King of France and charged with serious heresies, including homosexuality and the denial of Christ. Finding resonances between the fourteenth-century trial and contemporary events, Barber's classic account endeavours to tackle the unresolved controversies surrounding the consequences of the trial and includes discussions in the context of new work on the crusades, heresy, the papacy and the French monarchy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on multiple interconnected scriptural and spiritual sources, the Jewish tradition of ethical reflection is intricate and nuanced. This book presents scholarly Jewish perspectives on suffering, healing, life, and death, and it compares them with contemporary Christian and secular views. The Jewish perspectives presented in this book are mainly those of orthodox scholars, with the responses representing primarily Christian-Catholic points of view. Readers unfamiliar with the Jewish tradition will find here a practical introduction to its major voices, from Spinoza to Jewish religious law. The contributors explore such issues as active and passive euthanasia, abortion, assisted reproduction, genetic screening, and health care delivery. Offering a thoughtful and thought-provoking dialogue between Jewish and Christian scholars, Jewish and Catholic Bioethics is an important contribution to ecumenical understanding in the realm of health care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Benedict XVI and the Politics of Modernity, distinguished scholars from North America and Europe examine Pope Benedict XVI‘s searching reflections on the challenges and prospects facing modern Western society. For more than five decades, Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI has made the subject of the continued health and vitality of Western civilization a focal point of his reflections. From his early (1968) Introduction to Christianity to his later (2005) Values in a Time of Upheaval, the Pope has argued that the preservation of the social, political, scientific, and spiritual way of life that characterizes modern Western societies hinges upon our rediscovery of the unique roots and distinctive nature of Western civilization.Focusing on Pope Benedict XVI‘s nuanced account as to why the modern West cannot currently afford to forget or neglect its premodern Hellenic and Christian roots, this book will interest religious and nonreligious people who are concerned about the future of democracy and religion in contemporary Western societies. This book was based on a special issue of Perpsectives on Political Science.
