Book Synopsis Being Me Being You by : Samuel Fleischacker
Download or read book Being Me Being You written by Samuel Fleischacker and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern notions of empathy often celebrate its ability to bridge divides, to unite humankind. But how do we square this with the popular view that we can never truly comprehend the experience of being someone else? In this book, Samuel Fleischacker delves into the work of Adam Smith to draw out an understanding of empathy that respects both personal difference and shared humanity. After laying out a range of meanings for the concept of empathy, Fleischacker proposes that what Smith called “sympathy” is very much what we today consider empathy. Smith’s version has remarkable value, as his empathy calls for entering into the perspective of another—a uniquely human feat that connects people while still allowing them to define their own distinctive standpoints. After discussing Smith’s views in relation to more recent empirical and philosophical studies, Fleischacker shows how turning back to Smith promises to enrich, clarify, and advance our current debates about the meaning and uses of empathy.

Book Synopsis Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You by : Todd Hasak-Lowy
Download or read book Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You written by Todd Hasak-Lowy and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartfelt, humorous story of a teen boy’s impulsive road trip after the shock of his lifetime—told entirely in lists! Darren hasn’t had an easy year. There was his parents’ divorce, which just so happened to come at the same time his older brother Nate left for college and his longtime best friend moved away. And of course there’s the whole not having a girlfriend thing. Then one Thursday morning Darren’s dad shows up at his house at 6 a.m. with a glazed chocolate doughnut and a revelation that turns Darren’s world inside out. In full freakout mode, Darren, in a totally un-Darren move, ditches school to go visit Nate. Barely twenty-four hours at Nate’s school makes everything much better or much worse—Darren has no idea. It might somehow be both. All he knows for sure is that in addition to trying to figure out why none of his family members are who they used to be, he’s now obsessed with a strangely amazing girl who showed up out of nowhere but then totally disappeared. Told entirely in lists, Todd Hasak-Lowy’s debut YA novel perfectly captures why having anything to do with anyone, including yourself, is: 1. painful 2. unavoidable 3. ridiculously complicated 4. possibly, hopefully the right thing after all.

Book excerpt: 'An anthem! A permission slip! Freedom to be us in full glory and messiness ... a fun and freeing read' Melissa Hemsley 'What a powerful, freeing, thought-provoking read this is. I let out a breath I hadn't even realised I was holding' Anna Mathur You do not have to be good. At some point, you'll have absorbed the message that being good is to be calm, efficient and tidy. Wise and well-meaning people offer to help you become worthy, to be positive and productive and to always say 'yes, I can!' But what if this is wrong? And what if some of the things we've been told are bad, are just as useful as the good? Blending science, expert interviews and practical advice, here is the flipside of everything we've been told we should be - and how the bad parts are really not so bad after all. You'll discover: - Why it's helpful to feel angry - How it's counterproductive to always be productive - How laziness can improve your relationships - Why your body is, and has always been, absolutely fine - How clutter inspires creativity and enhances your sense of place - Why mindlessness is good for your mental health Be Bad, Better is not an invitation to start misbehaving but it is about taking what you think are your worst bits and asking what they could do to serve you. Examining how society polices our behaviour and artificially constructs the good and bad, here is a thoughtful and eminently helpful guide to reassessing your ideas of success, embracing every part of yourself and being bad, better.

Book Synopsis The Inhabitable Flesh of Architecture by : Marcos Cruz
Download or read book The Inhabitable Flesh of Architecture written by Marcos Cruz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s architecture has failed the body with its long heritage of purity of form and aesthetic of cleanliness. A resurgence of interest in flesh, especially in art, has led to a politics of abjection, completely changing traditional aesthetics, and is now giving light to an alternative discussion about the body in architecture. This book is dedicated to a future vision of the body in architecture, questioning the contemporary relationship between our Human Flesh and the changing Architectural Flesh. Through the analysis and design of a variety of buildings and projects, Flesh is proposed as a concept that extends the meaning of skin, one of architecture’s most fundamental metaphors. It seeks to challenge a common misunderstanding of skin as a flat and thin surface. In a time when a pervasive discourse about the impact of digital technologies risks turning the architectural skin ever more disembodied, this book argues for a thick embodied flesh by exploring architectural interfaces that are truly inhabitable. Different concepts of Flesh are investigated, not only concerning the architectural and aesthetic, but also the biological aspects. The latter is materialised in form of Synthetic Neoplasms, which are proposed as new semi-living entities, rather than more commonly derived from scaled-up analogies between biological systems and larger scale architectural constructs. These ’neoplasmatic’ creations are identified as partly designed object and partly living material, in which the line between the natural and the artificial is progressively blurred. Hybrid technologies and interdisciplinary work methodologies are thus required, and lead to a revision of our current architectural practice.

Book Synopsis To be Human or to be All by : Eriqa Queen
Download or read book To be Human or to be All written by Eriqa Queen and published by Erik Istrup Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a story based on conflict, but loaded with a deep understanding of the human and beyond and hints at transformative choices in life. The story begins before Julia’s physical birth, but quickly moves to be a sequel to her mother, Luzi’s series. Julia has selected various scenarios in her life from birth to just after her nine-year birthday. Her brother, Li, tells us about using water now and in the future, e.g. as farmland, mining, energy and habitat. We talk about artificial intelligent, AI and virtual reality, VR. From the future, Laura hints us to what to come in the next centuries, and she talks about colonising Mars. This tires in to Gaia too. France plays a role in the story, and we will touch on the Atlantean dream and even the Sphinx in Giza. There are stories from within the family, spiced with bits from Koot Hoomi, Saint Germain and others. A few new ones show up too. We talk about the new soul, the new mind and Returning to Self, and Julia hints us on some of her plans as an adult. A crucial part of the story, maybe even the matrix that keeps it together, is the Code. Code is what people refer to as energy, but we will remove energy, time and space from the equation, and show what gravity truly is.
