Book excerpt: In recent years, the number of strip clubs in the United States has increased dramatically. Dressed up with terms such as "gentlemen's clubs," they often feature valet parking, limousines, executive dining rooms, extravagant menus-and, of course, topless or nude women dancing on stage. Stripping has become a big business, with over 3.5 million people, primarily men, attending clubs each week. But what about the women who perform in the clubs? Why do they do it? What is their perception of their job? Numerous interviews with working strippers accompany extensive research in the literature. Some strippers see stripping as simply a job, others view it with a degree of embarrassment, while many see it as an opportunity for empowerment. Few became strippers by design but a surprising number continue to strip for many years. The use of drugs and instances of abuse are covered, as are the views of the strippers' families.

Recommended for the readers who feel better when their eyebrows are raised.” —The New Yorker A mystery set in the underworld of burlesque theater, The G-String Murders was penned in 1941 by the legendary queen of the stripteasers—the witty and wisecracking Gypsy Rose Lee. Narrating a twisted tale of a backstage double murder, Lee provides a fascinating look behind the scenes of burlesque, richly populated by the likes of strippers Lolita LaVerne and Gee Gee Graham, comic Biff Brannigan and Siggy the g-string salesman. This is a world where women struggle to earn a living performing bumps and grinds, have gangster boyfriends, sip beer between acts and pay their own way at dinner. Femmes Fatales restores to print the best of women’s writing in the classic pulp genres of the mid-20th century. From mystery to hard-boiled noir to taboo lesbian romance, these rediscovered queens of pulp offer subversive perspectives on a turbulent era. Enjoy the series: Bedelia; Bunny Lake Is Missing; By Cecile; The G-String Murders; The Girls in 3-B; Laura; The Man Who Loved His Wife; Mother Finds a Body; Now, Voyager; Return to Lesbos; Skyscraper; Stranger on Lesbos; Stella Dallas; Women’s Barracks. “[Lee’s] novel is a rich and lusty job, brimming over with infectious vitality and a hilarious jargon of her own.” —Life “A lurid, witty and highly competent detective story . . . Rich show business vocabulary and stage door gags make her book almost a social document . . . The G-String Murders builds up to a hair-raising climax.” —Time

Book excerpt: When three friends decide to throw caution to the wind, quit their full time jobs and travel through Europe for six months, they visualised an adventure they would never forget. And they weren't wrong! More than three decades later, they were still gas-bagging about the absurd situations they found themselves in. From Brisbane to London via the Greek Islands and other intoxicating European countries to boot, their looming escapade would become the topic of conversation for the rest of their lives. Chained to their dreary office desks since school, Brooke, Claire and Lucy had finally had enough of the corporate world. Existing like caged birds Monday to Friday was no longer an option. It was time for them to spread their dormant wings and take flight. Two Geminis and a Capricorn made an interesting travel combination, but when you’re friends till the end, it doesn’t matter what star sign you are, unless of course you’re a Capricorn with Cancer rising and decide to give it all away in Venice, because you fear for your life. The road to Utopia was never meant to be easy, but when you’re filled with hopes and dreams, who cares if you meet some oddballs along the way? From Greek Gods to Italian models. From a repulsive sex crazed Yugoslavian taxi driver, to an irresistible Serbian ex-con. From brushes with the Police in Venice to French thieves on the Metro in Paris, not to mention more than a few shady characters in between, this would certainly be a trip they would never forget. So if you’re looking for fun under the European sun, not to mention some unabashed sex and romance to spice up your every day life, grab your passport, book a ticket and join us on our trip of a lifetime.

Book excerpt: Erik was 12 when Gypsy decided she was through with striptease—'I’m forty-two years old. Too old to be taking my clothes off in front of strangers.' Her endless schemes for staying famous and maintaining their extravagant lifestyle—a best-selling writing career, a musical based on her life, a disastrous attempt to turn her home movies into a blockbuster—make for comedic yet poignant reading. My G-String Mother is a stylish, incisive portrait of two lives: an awkward adolescent who was as much confidante, co-conspirator, and companion as son, and the legendary woman who told police at a raid at the famous Minsky’s burlesque house, 'I wasn’t naked. I was completely covered by a blue spotlight.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on her experiences as a stripper in a city she calls Laurelton—a southeastern city renowned for its strip clubs—anthropologist Katherine Frank provides a fascinating insider’s account of the personal and cultural fantasies motivating male heterosexual strip club "regulars." Given that all of the clubs where she worked prohibited physical contact between the exotic dancers and their customers, in G-Strings and Sympathy Frank asks what—if not sex or even touching—the repeat customers were purchasing from the clubs and from the dancers. She finds that the clubs provide an intermediate space—not work, not home—where men can enjoyably experience their bodies and selves through conversation, fantasy, and ritualized voyeurism. At the same time, she shows how the dynamics of male pleasure and privilege in strip clubs are intertwined with ideas about what it means to be a man in contemporary America. Frank’s ethnography draws on her work as an exotic dancer in five clubs, as well as on her interviews with over thirty regular customers—middle-class men in their late-twenties to mid-fifties. Reflecting on the customers’ dual desires for intimacy and visibility, she explores their paradoxical longings for "authentic" interactions with the dancers, the ways these aspirations are expressed within the highly controlled and regulated strip clubs, and how they relate to beliefs and fantasies about social class and gender. She considers how regular visits to strip clubs are not necessarily antithetical to marriage or long-term heterosexual relationships, but are based on particular beliefs about marriage and monogamy that make these clubs desirable venues. Looking at the relative "classiness" of the clubs where she worked—ranging from the city’s most prestigious clubs to some of its dive bars—she reveals how the clubs are differentiated by reputations, dress codes, cover charges, locations, and clientele, and describes how these distinctions become meaningful and erotic for the customers. Interspersed throughout the book are three fictional interludes that provide an intimate look at Frank’s experiences as a stripper—from the outfits to the gestures, conversations, management, coworkers, and, of course, the customers. Focusing on the experiences of the male clients, rather than those of the female sex workers, G-Strings and Sympathy provides a nuanced, lively, and tantalizing account of the stigmatized world of strip clubs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Guyette, the "G-string King," referenced in the film of Wonder Woman''s creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, and costumer to Bettie Page, was the first person to produce and distribute fetish art in America. In 1935, he was arrested and sent to federal prison. But what should''ve been the end was just the beginning. Although rarely credited by name in his lifetime, he influenced everyone who would follow him, particularly the publishers Robert Harrison, John Willie, Irving Klaw, and Leonard Burtman. The aim of this book was to evoke the spirit of Guyette -- to collect surviving fragments of a decimated catalog largely by referencing vintage fetish publications from the 1930s through the 1980s and reconstruct a lost history. This portfolio of images is followed by biographical information seen nowhere else, and serves as a substantial introduction to the birth of American fetish art and the cultural impact of an unrecognized pioneer. ** 2018 Expanded Second Edition ** contains 25 additional pages, 30+ newly discovered, uniquely beautiful Guyette images. Many not seen in over 70 years. ====> Make this collection yours today! Reviews: "If New York collector, writer and fetish historian Richard Pérez Seves had not decided to assemble what he knew about Charles Guyette (along with a substantial selection of images) into this paperback, this influential forerunner of the genre''s better known exponents would have continued a lot longer as the great unsung hero of American fetish art." -- Tony Mitchell, thefetishistas.com "If you''re at all a fan of fetish art ... then this book will be right up your alley." -- kinkweekly.com "I''ve often cited John Willie''s gals as my biggest fashion inspiration but I''ll have to start tipping my hat to Guyette as well." -- Dita Von Teese ” "Peek Inside" with Dita Von Teese (copy & paste) ” instagram.com/p/BbC7Aw8BjRW ” "Peek Inside" NEW Edition (copy & paste) ” fethistory.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html From the Author: "Fetish art (although the word "fetish" was not used in those days as that term came into fashion in a non-clinical way in the 1970s) was about testing the boundaries of freedom. Some of it had to do with unconventional sexual expression ... but more of it had to do with fashion because of how identity and gender are connected to what we wear. Charles Guyette was a sexual fantasist, who earned his living as a costumer. He sold photos of his "costume studies" on the sly. He produced custom-made high-heel boots and shoes, sold corsets, opera gloves, and other eccentric accessories. He understood the transformative power of clothing, particularly "bizarre" and theatrical fashion. He is also referenced in the new film on Wonder Woman''s creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, as the costumer for Wonder Woman''s real life inspiration, Olive Byrne. * * * * About the author: He is also the author of the upcoming hardcover illustrated fetish art history and biography, Eric Stanton & the History of the Bizarre Underground. =============== Available now on Amazon for pre-order =============== Tags: Charles Guyette, the "G-string King," vintage fetish, fetish fashion, Yva Richard, Weimar, John Willie, Irving Klaw, Eric Stanton, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, The Secret History of Wonder Woman, My Beauty Mark, Burlesque and The Art of The Teese, high-heel shoes, boots, corsets, Dita Von Teese, Bettie Page: Queen of Curves, Bettie Page Reveals All, Voluptuous Panic, Vivian Maier, Annie Leibovitz, Jill Lepore, Horizontal Collaboration, Weimar Republic books, The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin, London Life

Book excerpt: BOOK 2 of the G-String Set in the Six Silver Strings Series Falling in love with Jack was easy, but there is nothing easy about staying in love with this arrogant rock star while settling into a new life in Los Angeles. The epic story of Jack and Marissa continues. Marissa and Tristan in his life changed his outlook. Jack feels needed. He welcomes the responsibility of a family. He embraces the love and companionship. Quickly, he whisks his son and the intriguing woman he had never forgotten to his home in LA. To Marissa, her future seems as mysterious as dusk’s shimmering shadows beneath the surface of the luxurious guitar shaped pool. There is no doubt this could be her dream house, her dream life with the man she loves. Not so dreamy is all she is beginning to see packaged with him. The crazy hours of a very active life. The garbage behind the glam. Mostly, a moody and presumptuous rock star whose public persona is opposite of the sweet celebrity she fell for. "Weathering Jack Storm" is book 2 of the G Strings Set, a spin off from the well loved rock and roll band romance Silver Strings Series. This full sized novel can stand alone, but is greatly enhanced by reading Book 1, "Jack Who?"

Book excerpt: In this “whip-smart thriller featuring a brilliant female protagonist, a finely-tuned plot, and some truly spectacular writing” (Cristina Alger, USA TODAY bestselling author) from the author of Leave No Trace, a high stakes crime triggers a woman’s complicated and potentially deadly search for the truth. Nora Trier catches thieves. As a forensic accountant, she’s unearthed millions in every corner of the world. She prides herself on her independence, the most essential currency of accounting, until her firm is hired by Strike. An anti-corporate, feminist athletic empire, Strike is owned by Logan Russo, a brash and legendary kickboxer, and her marketing genius husband, Gregg Abbott. They’re about to host a major tournament with twenty million dollars in prize money, and the chance for the champion to become the new face of the company. But Gregg suspects his wife already has a new face in mind in the form of a young trainer. When the prize money goes missing days before the tournament begins, Gregg hires Nora’s firm to find both the thief and the money—but Nora has a secret connection to Strike. Her partner pressures her into taking the case anyway, hinting he has information that could change the course of the investigation in a shocking and deadly way. A tense and unpredictable thriller, Strike Me Down “crackles with obsession, greed, lust, and plenty of ambition, and it’s loaded with more twists and turns than a spy novel” (Kirkus Reviews).

Book excerpt: 'Get 'em off!' several girls called out. This caught on like wild fire, as the whole club erupted with the same chant: 'Get 'em off!' ' Get 'em off!' 'Get 'em off!' - referring to the boys' G-string thongs... The penny dropped as the light bulb lit up - WOW!! I've got a Show! As these explosively unbuttoned memoirs reveal, Bari Bacco has really earned his unofficial title of 'Male Strip King' over the years. Inspired by the famous Levi's commercial from 1987 - featuring a launderette, a Marvin Gaye song and a young man in a pair of white boxer shorts - Bari pioneered the idea of a strip show for women: hardly lacking in tanned and toned male flesh, but also catering to the female viewer's fantasy world. Bari charts the ups and downs of the Dreamboys, the group he founded and managed for many years, including the scrapes they got into through their insatiable sex drive, their meetings with such world-famous figures as Diana Princess of Wales and Elton John, and their co-starring role in the Spice Girls' hit film Spiceworld. But the Dreamboys could also be a nightmare: Bari reveals the grubbiness never far below the glamour and glitz, and tells the true story of how the group he had created and nurtured came to be taken away from him. The Power Behind the Pouch is an insider's view of the early days of what is now a multi-million pound industry. Bari proves to be a sharp-eyed and quick-witted guide to this showbiz tale with a difference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential beginner's guide to string theory The Little Book of String Theory offers a short, accessible, and entertaining introduction to one of the most talked-about areas of physics today. String theory has been called the "theory of everything." It seeks to describe all the fundamental forces of nature. It encompasses gravity and quantum mechanics in one unifying theory. But it is unproven and fraught with controversy. After reading this book, you'll be able to draw your own conclusions about string theory. Steve Gubser begins by explaining Einstein's famous equation E = mc2, quantum mechanics, and black holes. He then gives readers a crash course in string theory and the core ideas behind it. In plain English and with a minimum of mathematics, Gubser covers strings, branes, string dualities, extra dimensions, curved spacetime, quantum fluctuations, symmetry, and supersymmetry. He describes efforts to link string theory to experimental physics and uses analogies that nonscientists can understand. How does Chopin's Fantasie-Impromptu relate to quantum mechanics? What would it be like to fall into a black hole? Why is dancing a waltz similar to contemplating a string duality? Find out in the pages of this book. The Little Book of String Theory is the essential, most up-to-date beginner's guide to this elegant, multidimensional field of physics.

From the bestselling author of Rich and Pretty comes a suspenseful and provocative novel keenly attuned to the complexities of parenthood, race, and class. Leave the World Behind explores how our closest bonds are reshaped—and unexpected new ones are forged—in moments of crisis. Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe. Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple—and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? And are they safe from one other?
